SARAH HEINZ HOUSE BULLETIN August 2018 Sarah Heinz House One Heinz Street Pittsburgh, PA 15212 August 2018 Bulletin The 2018 Recognition Dinner sponsored by the Alumni Association was held in May at the Four Seasons Banquet Hall. Distinct honors were bestowed on Laniya White and Charlie Minton (pictured here with Alumni President Samantha Turkovich), selected as the Outstanding Girl and Outstanding Boy in Sarah Heinz House membership for 2017-18. The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) presented Good Citizenship Medals to Charlie and Laniya for their Attendance, Attitude, Leadership, Service, Dedication and Loyalty to the House and the membership. LANIYA WHITE has been a member for the past 5 years, and although she hasn’t been here long, she has made a tremendous impact! During her time as a member, Laniya has done it all. This past year, Laniya excelled as one of our Senior members of the Keystone Club, and as an employee where she works as a Locker Room Attendant and Swim Lesson Instructor but where Laniya really shines is in the Dance Program. Not only does Laniya volunteer as an assistant Dance Instructor for the Preschool Dance Classes, she takes 5 different dance classes! She truly is a dedicated, driven young woman and the best part of it all, is that she does it always with a huge smile on her face! Congratulations again Laniya!! CHARLIE MINTON has been a member for the past 7 years and during those seven years, he has shown tremendous growth as a leader and as a young man. When he first started, you would typically only see Charlie in the gym, playing dodgeball or basketball. Fast forward to this past year, and you see Charlie every single day and all around the building being a tremendous role model and leader for the young men throughout membership. This past year, Charlie was an integral part of the Keystone Club, a gym/swim volunteer for both boy’s AND girl’s gym classes, and was the captain and leader of the Boys CYM Basketball Team. Whenever we need an extra hand, whether it is for a tour or an extra lifeguard, Charlie is there. Congratulations again Charlie! We are tremendously proud to honor Laniya and Charlie as our SAR winners! Both graduated this past June, so we wish both the best of luck as they start their lives as Heinz House Alumni! CONGRATS… LANIYA AND CHARLIE!!!

SARAH HEINZ HOUSE BULLETIN | AUGUST 2018 2

From the Executive Director

“Everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you are climbing it.” –Andy Rooney

In life, I’ve grown to learn that adventures are the best way to learn. Some adventures are well planned, while others are spontaneous. Some are short, while others move more slowly. Some you take with friends, while others you go alone. The one thing every adventure has in common, however, is learning. The learning differs for each adventure, as well as for each person on the adventure. You may learn about a place, a point in time, other people, a particular thing or yourself. Some of the learning will be invigorating and empowering, while other parts will be gritty and challenging. Despite the type, the value is equal.

Our journey with you last program year was yet another learning adventure. We learned where we could improve as an organization and staff to serve you better, while being re-affirmed in our ongoing value to the young people we are blessed to serve. For example, we learned that:

82% of our kids report embracing a strong concern for others through their experience at SHH.

85% of kids report a sense of belonging; that their ideas matter & that people listen to them at SHH.

90% of our kids report having a concern for their community through their experience at SHH.

93% of our kids report feeling safe at SHH.

95% of our kids report that there is an adult at SHH who wants them to do their best.

97% of our kids report having a good time at SHH.

We also learned that you want and need our doors to be open sooner, and that you value the ability to customize your experience. Thus, it is with great excitement that we look forward to starting the next adventure with you in SEPTEMBER….yes…I said September! As we embark on this next chapter together, we ask you to join us in embracing the learnings each moment will bring with curiosity, wonder and enthusiasm. We have missed you and look forward to seeing you soon!

Jennifer Cairns

CUSTOMIZE YOUR SHH EXPERIENCE:

Sarah Heinz House has a proud tradition of members regularly attending two weekly programs: Club

and Gym. However, SHH recognizes that families in the 21st century may wish to customize their

experience by substituting an “elective” course for a traditional Club or Gym. SHH now invites

families to do so.

Members may SUBSITUTE ONE of their Traditional programs with an elective course offering from

the same program department (Healthy Choices or Life-Skills)and for the same Division/Age

group (Starter, Prep, etc.). We believe this change will allow members and families to have more

flexibility while still ensuring that we see all our members for at least two programs per week. Regular

(over 50% attendance) must be maintained in any elective substitution in order to remain a member in

good standing.

If you would like to customize your experience in this way, please sign up for the elective while

registering for membership, also following the additional required procedures for substitution.

Volunteer and Staff Corner

VOLUNTEER PROCEDURES & PAPERWORK We have new procedures for volunteers (new and returning). In order to begin as a volunteer, you must submit a volunteer application or updated info form and clearance paperwork and attend a mandatory volunteer orientation. Adults CANNOT begin volunteering until they have done all three of these things. This is for the safety and security of our members. If you have any questions or would like to learn more about volunteering, please contact Dan Turkovich, at 412-231-2377 or

[email protected]

PT STAFF AND VOLUNTEER TRAINING With membership right around the corner, it’s time to meet with potential volunteers so that we are ready to go when the kids arrive! Volunteers start their program year one week earlier than the kids. This week is CRITICAL for our Volunteers so that they can be effective leaders for the kids. Each night will be geared to a specific audience (gym and/or club volunteers, volunteers for different divisions, extra program and special event volunteers, etc.). Throughout each night, we will offer specific sessions. Individuals will come in, and be greeted at a sign in table. There they will receive a list of all the sessions that will be offered. The days are as follows:

Tues, Sept 4th – Volunteer Training (6-8pm)

Sat, Sept 8th – Part Time Staff Orientation (12-2pm)

Mon, Sept 10th – Part Time Staff Orientation (5:30-8pm)

Wed, Sept 12th – Part Time Staff Orientation (5:30-8pm)

**PT Staff must attend one of the training dates ****

PART TIME STAFF NEEDED Employment opportunities may still be available for adults and members who have demonstrated strong leadership skills and have earned the privilege of that opportunity. Any Adult, Middler or Senior member interested in applying for one of our part time positions should contact the Front Desk for an application, as well as attend one of the shadowing sessions listed above. WORK PERMITS REQUIRED FOR TEENS BEFORE FIRST SHIFT! FBI and Act 31 clearances, and a completed employee packet are REQUIRED before starting your first shift!

THANK YOU:

RESIDENT CAMP TEAR- DOWN

We would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all those who helped to close up (“Tear Down”) Heinz House Camp back in August. The Girls’ Camp Counselors took down the tents and put all materials away before they departed camp (this is a HUGE job!). Some of the traditional Tear Down Crew dissembled and carried the entire waterfront topside to storage, and also closed and prepared the buildings for the winter.

It is a huge operation, and the volunteers are definitely the lifeblood of it all, but we need more help next year! Please contact Dan Turkovich if you are interested in helping with Set Up or Tear Down next year. Thank you again to this year’s volunteers – your work and effort was invaluable!
