VITORIA-GASTEIZEUROPEAN GREEN CAPITAL
9
In fact, it is the first Spanish city that was awarded the GEP cer-tification, which guarantees the competitiveness of its businesses and industrial areas and which also won the Green Flag Envi-ronmental Award in 2010.
In addition, the Green Belt of Vitoria-Gasteiz, consisting of seven parks surrounding the city and a total of 47 kilometres of pedestrian and cycle paths (in addition to the other 43 kilome-tres in the city), gives it natural surroundings of high ecological value where you can stroll, ride a bike, go bird watching and enjoying nature a few minutes from the centre of Vitoria.
In this sense, there is easy access to the parks from the heart of the city either on foot, by bi-cycle, city bus or car.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is a fashionable city that is authentic, friendly, green, sustainable, modern, me-dieval and charming.
The green city that is evidenced by the European Green Capital award 2012, obtained thanks to its environmental policy and the commitment and involvement of citizens who are proud of their city. Also, it is in the process of obtaining the Biosphere Respon-sible Tourism Destination as the top destination in Euskadi.
The development of a series of innovative and committed actions in this field as eco-neighbourhoods, the ambitious mobility plan, measures to improve the air quality control of industrial emissions, reduce noise pollution and an entire political awareness of the use of materials used in offices, furni-ture, etc., have contributed to the making of this green city.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is internationally recognized for its biodiversity and inclusion of green spaces in the urban fabric.
1010
In 2000, the Green Belt was selected by the UN as among the 100 best global perfor-mances at the III International Good Practice Competition for to improve living conditions in cities. Good practices that have been maintained and applied to other areas also during its green "reign".
These practices, and their com-mitment to the future, make it an ideal city for hosting sus-tainable conference events. A sustainable event in a city and surroundings immersed in an environmental culture.
• "Cumbres de Guadarrama" International Prize awarded in the category of "architecture or sustainable urban growth" by the Interior Green Belt Project. 2014.
• European Green Capital 2012.• Reina Sofía City Accessibility Award (2012).• Green Flag Environmental Award 2010.• A Green Belt, selected by the UN from among the 100 best
global performances at the III International Good Practice Competition.
• The first Spanish city to obtain GEP (Green Enterprise Parks) certification.
• A committed sustainable tourism destination, in the process of certification as a Biosphere Responsible Tourism Destination as the top destination in Euskadi.

VITORIA-GASTEIZCAPITAL
13
Vitoria-Gasteiz Vitoria is the capital of Euskadi, which gives it a dyna-mism and projection at national and international level and a sig-nificant presence in political life.
A successful municipal policy has helped it to keep its balance by combining urbanism, the environ-ment (it was European Green Capi-tal 2012), and social initiatives with first-rate services and a network of sociocultural, civic and sports centres that unite civic life.
The city is the setting for the pass-ing of time. It is Gothic and Re-naissance, Baroque, Neo-Classical, Romantic and avant-garde. In particular, its old quarter is one of the most beautiful and best preserved in Euskadi and northern Spain. It was declared a Monu-mental Site in 1997 and received
An attractive city with a high quality of life thanks to the atmosphere in the streets, careful planning, ease of internal movement, the Green Belt and the approachable character of its inhabitants.
• FADCity and Landscape Award 2015 for improving accessibility to the Old Quarter of Vitoria Gasteiz.
• World Heritage Site award granted by UNESCO to the Santa Maria Cathedral as a monumental milestone framed within the Northern Camino de Santiago. 2015.
• "Cumbres de Guadarrama" International Prize awarded in the category of "architecture or sustainable urban growth" by the Interior Green Belt Project. 2014.
• Spanish Capital of Gastronomy 2014.
• European Green Capital 2012.
• The Old Quarter was declared a Monumental Site in 1997.
the Europa Nostra Award 2010 for the 'Recovery of Vitoria’s forgot-ten walls’ project. Today it opens up a new era in modern buildings and neighbourhoods, with many garden and pedestrian areas, civic centres and leisure, sports and busi-ness facilities.
The atmosphere in the streets, their careful planning, the ease of in-ternal movement, the magnificent surroundings and the approachable character of its inhabitants make it an attractive and safe city with a high quality of life. As well as being renowned for its gastronomy, as it was declared Spanish Capital of Gastronomy in 2014.

15
A capital of services and an op-erating centre for business and meetings, the strategic location and complete infrastructure of Vitoria-Gasteiz make this city the ideal place for holding events, conferences and meetings…
Vitoria-Gasteiz has worked in conference activity since 1986 and from its beginnings has main-tained a firm commitment to quality and infrastructures aimed at the professional sector.
EVENTS, CONFEREN-CES AND MEETINGS
The Europa Confer-ence Centre, modern and functional, and the Villa Suso Palace, a beautiful Renais-sance palace located in a medieval setting, are the city’s two confer-ence spaces. Various locations can be added to these for events and meetings.
A functional, innovative, comfortable, spacious and bright building. An icon of sustainable architecture, its transformation follows the Passivhaus Standard that promotes high energy efficiency buildings.

EUROPA CONFERENCE CENTRE
Europa Conference Centre, opened in 1989, the year of the fall of the Berlin Wall, and remod-elled eco-architecturally in 2015, is the king of Euskadi conference centres and an icon of sustainable architecture.
Strategically located in the city’s most important thoroughfare, the Avenida de Gasteiz, it allows a seamless connection to outside the city and at the same time is located close to the Old Quarter.
The property and building man-agement is local.
GREEN ON THE OUTSIDE.VERTICAL GARDENThe vertical garden covering its facade is a pioneer in the repro-duction of native ecosystems. 1492 m2 of greenery with over 33,000 different varieties of plants from Alava and the Basque Country, which improve insula-tion by 75%, resulting in energy savings.
The large windows are covered by deciduous vines that allow sunlight to enter in winter and protect it from the summer heat.
21
GREEN ON THE INSIDE. THE ‘PASSIVHAUS’ CONCEPT* The profound renewal of its interior architecture, an example of good practice, is based on a careful and innovative upgrade of its facilities, an environmen-tal commitment that goes one step further and a clear sign of identity in the field of con-ference hosting. Its model of thermal, acoustic and landscape conditioning with its garden façade (vertical garden) makes it a reference point in sustainable building material.
The new Europa Conference Centre. is a spacious, adaptable and abundant setting with natu-ral light from its skylights and viewpoints. The Europa offers a fully-equipped, modern, versa-tile and comfortable interior. This icon of sustainable and eco-efficient architecture has solar panels, biomass fuel, control sys-tems for CO2 levels, temperature and humidity to provide spaces with maximum comfort.
Its transformation is based on the Passivhaus standard whose purpose is to promote buildings of very high energy efficiency in Spain (buildings with almost zero energy consumption) by publicising the standard.*Passivhaus bases its construc-
tions on five features: high thermal insulation, infiltration control, high efficiency carpentry, design by specialist (PHPP software) and ventilation. In addition, it uses solar energy for better climate conditioning and to reduce energy consumption.
Europa Conference Centre is both part of and the emblem of the inner Green Belt, where the city works and where Vitoria-Gasteiz aims to be structured around the rehabilitation and renovation of buildings, water management, design and man-agement of the urban “green" spaces, the renewal of public space and mobility in the city.

CASA DEL CORDÓNLocated in the heart of the Old Quarter, this monumental house of the fifteenth century owes its name to the Franciscan stone cord around one of the entrance archways.
Its interior conceals a polychrome starry vault, which covers the noble room of the tower and remains intact until today. This is one of the few civil buildings that remains.
The Jewish merchant, Juan Sánchez de Bilbao, had it built and it was the temporary residence of illustrious figures such as Philip the Handsome and his wife, Joanna the Mad.
In addition, the building witnessed some of the great events of history. Adriano of Utrecht, for example, received the news of his election as Pope Adriano VI in this house.
This is an example of careful resto-ration work that retains the curious combination of stately and com-mercial house which enables it to hold small gatherings and meetings in a very unique space.

Through its programme of guided tours, the Añana Salt Valley (Sali-nas de Añana, Álava) allows you to discover this outdoor monu-ment with thousands of years of history, and has received the Europa Nostra Award 2015. You will discover the restoration work of this cultural landscape in the midst of a rehabilitation process and the different types of salt and artisan production.
Chefs Aduriz, Atxa, Berasategui and Subijana, amongst others, extol its high gastronomic value and have their own salt beds in the valley.
Inside one of the salt production beds and roller in hand, you will feel like a real salt farmer. Also, afterwards you can enjoy the salt spa, which recalls the baths of the salt farmers in salt brine, or take part in a tasting to appreciate the different qualities and tastes of salt stalagmites, sea salt and salt with arbequina oil.
