    INTRODUCTION

The 19th Southeast Asian Geotechnical Conference and 2nd Association of Geotechnical Societies in Southeast Asia Conference (19SEAGC-2AGSSEAC) will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 31 May – 3 June 2016 at Dorsett Grand Subang, Subang Jaya, Malaysia. A one day pre-conference and one day post conference short course will be held on 29 May 2016 and 3 June 2016 respectively at Wisma IEM in Petaling Jaya. The Southeast Asia Young Geotechnical Engineers' Conference will be held on 30 May 2016 at Wisma IEM in Petaling Jaya. The Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society was founded in 1967 at AIT Bangkok by Dr Za-Chieh Moh. In 2007 the Association of Geotechnical Societies in Southeast Asia was founded also by Dr Za-Chieh Moh. At the 17SEAGC held in Taipei in 2010, it was decided that the 18SEAGC-1AGSSEA Conference will be held in Singapore in 2013. The Singapore Conference was a great success with more than 350 participants. This 19SEAGC-2AGSSEAC to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is also expected to be well supported and successful. The Conference will have an Opening Keynote Address, Chin Fung Kee Lecture, Za-Chieh Moh Lecture, S L Lee Lecture, Keynote Lectures, Special Lectures, and Special Session Lectures to be delivered by distinguished geotechnical experts and eminent academicians. More than 160 contributed papers from member Geotechnical Societies in Southeast Asia and other overseas countries will be presented at the Conference. Special sessions on TC211 and TC217 will be held at the conference venue. For further information, kindly visit our website at

    INTRODUCTION OF KUALA LUMPUR

Kuala Lumpur (KL) is like a melting pot of all the wonderful cultures that make up Asia. As the capital of Malaysia, it epitomises the nation's slogan "simply Asia". From art to history to food, one's senses are embraced by the city's dynamic surroundings. This is a majestic city that was founded in 1857 and now in the 21st Century it brings together the past, the present and the future. There is so much to see in Kuala Lumpur - Chinatown with charming old buildings and makeshift shops, then there's Little India while the Jamek Mosque which celebrates its centenary in 2014, is one of the oldest mosques in the city.

These historical landmarks blend in superbly with the modern day ones. The KL Tower is one of the world's tallest concrete structures which functions as a telecommunication tower. The skyline of Kuala Lumpur is dominated by a structure that is famous the world over - the tallest Twin Towers in the world known as the Petronas Towers. If it’s food that's your thing then KL is the place to be because this place is a feast for the senses and will tempt any taste bud from the many hawker centres through to some of the finest restaurants. Another activity that you could definitely look forward to is shopping in KL.

CONFERENCE VENUE The conference will be held at Dorsett Grand Subang in Subang Jaya. Nestled in the heart of Subang Jaya, Dorsett Grand Subang offers opulent hotel guest rooms and suites in the city's most upscale entertainment hub, shopping district and tourist attraction. Located just 35 minutes from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, KLIA2 and Sepang International Circuit, the hotel is just a 15-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur City Centre. Hotel facilities include:- Business centre Laundry and valet service Clark Hatch Fitness Centre Handicap access Parking facilities for up to 350 cars Parking space for up to 2 coaches Concierge service Babysitting service Foreign exchange Complimentary scheduled shuttle service to designated destinations Valet parking High-speed Internet access Beauty shop Tanjung Wellness Spa Non-smoking Rooms

    TECHNICAL VISITS AND TOURS

Site 1: Foundation and Substructure Construction for Warisan Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur

Warisan Merdeka is a mixed-development project, which will be developed in three stages on a 19-acre land and is expected to be fully completed in year 2024. First phase of the project comprises of a 118-storey iconic tower and a shopping mall, with a gross development value of RM5 billion. The ground works for the first phase started in 2014 and is expected to be completed in 2020. Merdeka PNB118 will be the new landmark in Kuala Lumpur and the tallest tower in Malaysia. Standing at 630 meters, the

Merdeka PNB118 will be the second tallest tower in Asia and listed as the 5th tallest in the ‘Mega-Tall’ category of buildings in the world. Site 2: Underground Station of Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT), Kuala Lumpur

MMC-Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd (MGKT) was set up on 30 March 2012 to undertake the design and construction work for the underground package of Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) project. The KVMRT project is part of the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme and owned by the Government of Malaysia through MRT Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRTC). The RM8.2billion tunnelling package for KVMRT SBK Line involves the design and construction of 9.5km of KVMRT underground tunnel with seven underground stations. MGKT won the contract through a competitive bid. The underground tunnelling

alignment runs from the Semantan North Portal near the Federal Hill past the urban transport hub of KL Sentral and the busy streets of Bukit Bintang and Chinatown to the Maluri South Portal near Taman Miharja. The 18km of tunnelling is primarily through two key geological formations, Kenny Hill and KL Limestone, with the latter weathered to Grade V (tropical), all to be carried out with ten tunnel boring machines. With almost half of the tunnel alignment sitting in the Grade V karstic limestone, MGKT had proposed for this section a twin mode tunnel boring machine (TBM) that would operate in both ‘slurry’ and ‘EPB’ modes, additionally equipped with facility to use a higher density slurry. On this project six twin-mode TBMs with variable density provision were proposed to undertake 7.5 km of tunnelling through the limestone, which was completed end June 2014 from the initial launch in May 2013. The VD TBM has been attracting attention from industry specialists for its precise performance in tackling karstic limestone. This machine is a direct evolution from MMC-Gamuda’s tunnelling experience on the dual purpose SMART tunnel project in Kuala Lumpur through similar karstic limestone, but obviously without the variable density provision and as a result with less control on ground loss. Additionally, VD TBM has the provision to be converted from slurry mode to EPB with just a short stoppage of a week to 10 days to install the alternative mucking system. This feature is indeed much needed at the point of transition in Bukit Bintang, where there is absolutely no provision possible for retrieval/launch shafts. For the Underground Works Package Contractor for the KVMRT Sungai Buloh – Kajang Line, MGKT were also awarded the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Awards 2014: Technical Innovation of the Year Category for the Variable Density Tunnel Boring Machine (VD TBM) and the Winner of the International Safety Award (with Distinction) from the British Safety Council in recognition of its commitment to health and safety management for 2015.
