LAW FIRM PROJECTTALLAHASSE, FL

Page 5: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

The law firm project is derived the Southern Live Oak which is the common plant in the southeastern United States. It not only reflects the humid and torridity climate in Tallahassee, but also shows the interactions between human and nature. The abstract tree concept is used in the open office area, and it helps the clients understand the firm’s unique culture and concept of localization. Also, the working surface in the system furniture design is made by local oak. This project is designed to satisfy aesthetic and functional needs, and it also provides the sense of connection to the local pedestrian street.

The systems furniture design focuses three main concepts: functionality, creativity and flexibility. The design helps professionals work efficiently and easily communicate with other colleagues. In addition, the design aesthetics reflect the law firm’s unique culture and sense of professionalism.

The large windows in the southern building can bring nature into the interior space and connects the local landscape with office design.

SYSTEM FURNITURE DESIGN

The curved primary work zone is inspired by a circular concept, allowing the user to have convenient access to a variety of resources and electrical devices. The secondary zone is installed with dual monitors, tablet and other personal devices. Those innovative devices, such as the tablet and webcam, help the worker improve the communication between different team members and departments. moreover, the devices in the secondary zone can reduce paper usage and to maintain a more organized working environment. The shelves and open closet design can help workers find documents more easily. The closet with drawers in the peripheral zone can store personal items and ensure the safety of important documents. The seat area is multifunctional and changeable. It can be a small meeting area or a place to brainstorm with colleague.

FUNCTIONALITY

Page 13: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

The design is also flexible and creative. The panel in the systems furniture can be easily uninstalled or replaced in order to satisfy multiple function and needs. Also, the personal working space can be changed to the small case room or informal meeting space. The glass and transparent panels within the design allow for more access to daylight to promote healthier working environment.

The project focuses on how to create a bold, informative, and persuasive graphic to explain data. We has analyzed data from 117 surveys and prepared conceptual design ideas for the 1st floor of Carpenter Hall in WSU. Everything is important in conveying the message inherent in the data, and it includes color, size, shape, order, visuals, etc. In this project, we advance a design concept and implementation plan that can be supported bt the data.

SOLUTIONS

We encourage students to renovate the space by themselves. This idea can train student’s design, creativity, and collaboration skills. To achieve the DIY space, our design more focuses on the decoration and not remodeling the space. In our plan, we won’t take off any existing wall or window. All new walls are using attaching panel wall, so everything can install by students themselves. The DIY idea not only reduces the cost, but also enhances SDC identity.

The site is in a meadow sloped toward a valley with views to the southeast and southwest. Climatic conditions are mostly temperate with many sunny days, prevailing SW winds, and occasional fierce storms. On the site is a “relic,” an old building of unknown origin that will provide structure and walls within restrictions as noted.

PAINTERLY SPACEA PAINTER RETREAT

Page 29: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

This project focuses on the utilization of ordering principles derived from the analysis of a two-demensional work into the making of three-dimensional space. The creative retreat emphasizesthe application of an aesthetic approach and the language to a design problem by researching another discipline’s formal language and poetic content. In addition, the project also celebrate light, views, and place.

26

Page 30: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

“All pictorial form begins with the point that sets itself in motions…The point moves…and the line comes into being-the first dimension. If the line shifts to form a plane, we obtain a two-dimensional. In the movement from plane to spaces, the clash of planes gives rise to body (three-dimensional)…A summary of the kinetic energies which move the point into a line, the line into a plane, and the plane into a spatial dimension.” Paul Klee 1961

This space is designed to satisfy aesthetic and functional needs. The eastern wall is made by translucent material which can bring natural light into this space. It can soften the strong daylight and present low glare in interior space. At night time, the eastern wall and artificial light will work together in order to create a relax and comfortable space. The huge windows in north side provide abundant daylight and blur the line between natural environment and artificial building. The hallow timber frame on the northeastern ceiling can bring high quantity cool light into the space and show visual clarity. The light displays strong visible contrast and shows architectural characteristics. moreover, timber frame also create temporal orientation. The shadow of the frame can also display the diurnal cycle and help to show different materials and textures in the space.

This nirvana chair is inspired by central concept of Buddhism creeds. It represents that the material in our universe can be recreated or destroyed, and all things on earth follow the regulations of Samsara. In addition, the substance will not be disappeared and maintain at the perfect condition. I want to create the chair which can keep balance between itself and the environment. The symmetrical design shows that the chair is stable and harmonious, and the curved back of chair displays that the object is dynamic and variable. It represents that the immortal substances are continually changing in endless circle in mahāyāna Buddhism. The dominant color in this chair is crimson, and crimson color not only represents the beginning but also end of the life circle. The nirvana chair pursues the equilibrium between the aesthetic and function. This chair is also an approach to ergonomics which conforms to the ADA requirement.

REMODELING PROJECTTOKYO, JAPAN

Page 37: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

The residence is designed for an older couple who are living in a stressful surrounding, Tokyo. This house is a small resident locates the center of Tokyo, and it was originally designed for a family living. The owners want to reduce the number of rooms and have more relax living environment. moreover, the house is not de-signed to be a permanent living space. On the other hand, it will be a vacation house when the owners come to Tokyo for meeting.

The design concept of this project is derived from the “block” shapes. The block shape presents the idea of simplicity and the concept of functionality. In this project, the drop ceiling design, the furniture, and arrangement follow the concept of the block and show the romantic feeling.

GREGORY’S REMODELING PROJECT

The design concept is derived from a “home poem”, and this poem talks about how people desire to have a safe and comfortable home. In gregory’s apartment, the decorative wall separates the public area and private space. It emphasizes that our per-sonal space is enclosed and will not be disturbed. In addition, it not only presents that people pursues a comfortable and safe space but also shows the prin-ciple of balance and harmony in their home.

The gregory home design is also implied the principle of rhyme and unity. many small geometrical patterns are used in decorative walls and bookshelf. Those patterns which gradually enlarged symbolize the process of life and the concept of sustainable development. The sustainable energy and materials are used in gregory’s home in order to present the balance between human beings and environment.

Page 49: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

Choosing color in this project is also related to those principles. The warm and harmonious colors can be found in most walls and floors, and this idea is derived from the poem which notices the peace of mind. The high correlated color temperature can also be found in ambient and accent lights in this project because of the poem.

The design is applied the concept of river and railway. This receptiontable shows the dynamic lines and abstract form. It not only satisfiesthe aesthetic needs but also the functional demand.

To show local art projects and community events. People can sit on the Theater-like seat, or the seatalso can a art disply. Thus, it will be mult-purpose.

The Wayfinding design in this Heritage museum follows the same concept as the entire space, Rail Road. It used the station name in the points of the showcases and use the rail track as the route. Thus, it creates the unity for the space.

Page 55: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

The steel frame in the panal display area presents the sense of industrial age. This design use the old rail to be the material and directly connect to the reception table. The adjustable bar can easily help disable people to see the panals. The moveable panals are also easy to change and maintain.

THE BEAUTY SHOPTHE WATER CONCEPT

The designer will develop from the Program, the space plans for the prototype including conceptual design of the exterior and interior building elements, merchandise fixture layouts, and service/experience areas. The designer is to provide materials and methods to achieve the design intent. The scope of work includes review of brand positioning including branding elements and translation of brand attributes to the retail environment. It is recommended that the Designer select a working name for the restaurant concept instead of “Beauty Company, Inc”. Since locations in NYC, London and Tokyo are yet to be identified; it is the intent that the new store front and its windows reflect the store’s brand positioning and the incorporation of new interactive technologies.

Page 59: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

EXPLORE YOUR INNER BEAUTY

The water concept is derived by the ideal female image in modern society. Women are just like water. They display abundant vitality and extreme power. The soft power which women have defines the new idea of beauty. They remind us that it is better to have broad definition of beauty, and people have to concern about inner beauty, such as confidence, independence and self-realization. The idea of beauty is similar to water that it not only purifies our heart, but also represents the source of life.

56

Page 60: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

CONCEPTUAL SKETCHES

Water is fluid, soft, and yielding. But water will wear away rock, which is rigid and cannot yield. As a rule, whatever is fluid, soft, and yielding will overcome whatever is rigid and hard. This is another paradox: what is soft is strong.- Lao-Tzu (600 B.C.)

Women are just like water. They not only symbolize enormous energy, but also show the soft power. The increasing women’s economic, politic, and social influence presents that they have ability to change the world.

“Despite the physical, cognitive, emotional, and spiritual obstacles in the quest to achieve idealized beauty, women continue to chase it.” (Berberick, 2010)

Compare to men, women are more flexible and dynamic. Women are similar to water that they are changeable as time goes by. And they are easy to adapt itself to any environment.

Page 61: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

“Everybody says women are like water. I think it’s because water is the source of life, and it adapts itself to its environment. Like women, water also gives of itself wherever it goes to nurture life....”

Xinran, The good Women of China: Hidden Voices

Page 64: CHIEH-JU HUANG PORTFOLIO

CONCEPT PHILOSOPHY

The water concept represents better design solution for successful business model, and the concept deeply influences the three retail strategies which include emotional connection, functional innovation, and creative technology.

First, we try to improve the emotional connection. We want our customers in the beauty shop to feel more confident, independent and self-realized. The beauty shop will be applied three main colors, black, white and tiffany blue. Black and white color symbolizes the increasing economic and political power which the upper middle class women have. On the other hand, tiffany blue represents women’s soft power, and it includes elegance, dynamicity and inclusiveness. Our design goal is trying to connect those emotional factors to the water concept design in order to attract people’s attention and increase consumer-product attachment.

moreover, we will enhance the functional innovation. The organized product display and layout can help our consumer to search the product and service. The water concept is also applied into the wayfinding design. The black line is just like a river, and it leads people to come into the interior space. The black line connects the entire space together and shows more the symmetrical and organized layout. It also decreases the search costs and increase transaction efficiency.

We also create a new technology standard for a beauty shop. The touch screen on the cabinet and interactive table can help our customers obtain required information and extra service. People also can simply scan the qR code on the screen and their purchases can be delivered to their home directly. In this project, the LED lighting will be used in ambient lighting and general lighting. The innovative OLED lighting will be installed between the ceiling and the black reflective panels, and this lighting can imitate the flow of water.

If these three innovative strategies and water concept can be applied into the retail design, it can increase the brand value and gain a competitive advantage in beauty business.
