Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote music of elegant beauty, exquisitely crafted and filled with the signatures of his style: gracious melodies, drama, elegant counterpoint and an inventive sense of variation. He wrote three preludes and fugues, as well as six sonatas for organ, all elegantly crafted and exploiting the many colors of the organ. The Prelude and Fugue in c minor, the first of the three, opens with a powerful and dark theme stated in the manuals with virtuosic pedal passages, then continues with a lyrical fugue subject in a lilting 6/8 metre. Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707) was Organist of the Marienkirche in Lübeck and considered the premier organist of Germany. He founded the legendary "Abendmusik" concerts, for which he wrote a prodigious number of cantatas, sinfonias and organ works. J. S. Bach made a pilgrimage on foot (200 miles) to hear Buxtehude play and stayed to study with Buxtehude for six months, much to the dismay of his Pastor! The Ciacona in e minor is a series of variations over a repeating theme heard in the pedals. Louis Vierne, Organiste Titulaire of Notre Dame, Paris until 1937, was a student of César Franck, Charles Marie Widor (co-student with Charles Tournemire), and Alexandre Guilmant as well as a composer and brilliant teacher. He expanded the French symphonic organ tradition he inherited from them with six symphonies and many other works for organ, all highly imaginative in their use of the instrument and in harmonic development.

The Symphonie No. 3, written during a summer of convalescence at the Dupré home, contains some of his most brilliant writing. The Adagio sets a beautiful and plaintive melody heard first in the pedals. This melody is developed and transformed through several modifications until it reaches a resolution of great serenity. Like the second movement, it shows the Flûte Harmonique, les fonds d’orgue, and les Voix Célestes in expressive and gracious writing.

His Second Symphony is an early work, written at a fairly happy time of his life before his increasing blindness forced him to endure many painful operations. The opening Allegro risoluto is in e minor with a dark and powerful theme, showing the chromaticism which was to dominate his later writing.

Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) was Organiste Titulaire at St. Etienne-du-Mont, Paris, and Professor of Harmony at the Paris Conservatory. His organ studies were with Charles Tournemire, Louis Vierne, Eugène Gigout, and Alexandre Guilmant, and he studied composition with Paul Dukas. His most well-known work is his exquisite Requiem and he composed orchestral, organ and choral works. Duruflé was quite selective about which of his organ works would be published, in the end only publishing five. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) was a well-known teacher in his time, and, along with a few others, greatly advanced keyboard technique beyond its previous limits - for instance, he was among the first to make widespread use of the thumbs in scale fingering patterns. It is thought that the organ Trio Sonatas were used as student pieces as well as performance repertoire - indeed, there is great evidence to suggest that they were often played by Bach’s children on the family’s pedal harpsichord. (Practice time on pipe organs was, of course, severely limited until the advent of the electrical blower, as yet several centuries away!) The Trio Sonatas remain among the most demanding of all organ literature to this day; there are three independent voices, taken up respectively by right hand, left hand, and pedal, and require great dexterity by each. The late virtuoso performer and Bach scholar Marie-Claire Alain once remarked, “When a student can play them, he knows at last that his technique is complete; yet who among us plays them in public without trepidation?” Max Reger (1873-1916), organist, composer, conductor, pianist and teacher (Professor of Theory at the Leipzig Conservatory) wrote a great body of works for the organ in a highly developed romantic idiom. His many works for organ stretched not only tonal boundaries but organ technique, requiring virtuosic and expressive playing. Max Reger (1783-1916) was a German composer, organist, pianist, conductor, and teacher during the late stages of the Romantic period. His influences included the attention to structure of composers such as Beethoven and Brahms, combined with the advanced harmonic language of later Romantic composers like Liszt and Wagner, and the highly contrapuntal nature of the music of J.S. Bach. He wrote music for a wide variety of instruments and ensembles, in every musical form available at the time, and left a particular quantity of organ music, much of which places great technical demands upon the performer. The Introduction und Passacaglia is written in the key of d minor, and opens with a thrilling solo pedal entrance, followed immediately by crashing chords in the manuals, which serve to create quite a dramatic Introduction, indeed! Then follows a Passacaglia, a dance form which consists of a repeating bass line in three-quarter time. It is introduced softly in the Pedal, with contrapuntal variations which unfold above it on the manuals. The effect is of a great, long crescendo to a grand, full-organ finale.

Richard Barrick Hoskins was appointed Director of Music, Organist & Carillonneur of St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church, Chicago, in 1984. He leads the music program which includes a 16-voice professional choir, a volunteer parish choir, and two children’s choirs, as well as Concerts at St. Chrysostom’s which presents international, national, and Chicago artists: organists, period instrument groups, choirs, and carillonneurs. The series prominently features the organ built in 2005 by C. B. Fisk, Inc., of Gloucester, Massachusetts. He has an active career as a concert artist both here and Europe. He has appeared as organist with the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera Chorus, the Chicago Symphony Brass, Music of the Baroque, the Aestas Consort, the William Ferris Chorale, Chicago Choral Artists, St. James’ Chamber Orchestra, Gaudete Brass Quintet, Asbury Brass Quintet and the Millar Brass Ensemble. Notable recitals in Europe have included three recitals at St. Sulpice, Paris, and at York Minster, York, England. He has accompanied choirs for six week-long residencies in England at Wells Cathedral, Durham Cathedral, Lincoln Cathedral, Worcester Cathedral, and Salisbury Cathedral, as well as residencies at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco, and The Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York City. He was appointed Assistant Professor of Organ & Harpsichord at Northern Illinois University, DeKalb in 1995 where he taught until 2008. From 2007-2016 he was College Organist at Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin, where he taught organ and church music. He has been heard on Pipedreams, the nationally syndicated radio program produced by Minnesota Public Radio. His recordings include live concert recordings at St. Chrysostom’s, with the Music of Baroque, the Choir of the Lutheran Theological Seminary of Chicago, and with St. James Cathedral.  He is the Organist on the DVD of the 2007 Christmas Concert by Music of the Baroque, produced and broadcast by Channel 11 WTTW and national PBS stations.  He is a regular contributor to The Diapson, the respected organ journal, writing reviews of choral music and other articles. He received his Bachelor and Masters of Music degree from Northwestern University in 1976 and 1989 (William H. Barnes Scholar & Pi Kappa Lambda). In 1979 he was awarded two scholarships by the French government for organ study in France with Daniel Roth, then Organiste-Titulaire of the Basilica du Sacre-Couer, now Organiste-Titulaire of St. Sulpice, with whom he also studied at the Summer Academy for Organists in Haarlem, Holland, in 1977. During the summer of 1992, he studied at Clare College, Cambridge, at the Cambridge Choral Studies Seminar.

Thomas Colao enjoys a diverse musical career as an organist, conductor, and classical singer. He was appointed the Associate Director of Music at St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church in Chicago in September 2019, where he helps to lead all aspects of the church’s renowned sacred music program, including overseeing the Children’s Chorister program, assisting in the direction of the professional Choir of St. Chrysostom’s Church, as well as the volunteer Parish Choir, and playing the church’s landmark organ, Fisk Op. 123, in worship services and recital programs. Prior to this appointment, he served as Director of Music & Organist at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Princeton, New Jersey, where he oversaw all aspects of the church’s active music ministry, including a re-built Children’s Chorister program as well as one of the premier Adult Choir programs in the Diocese of New Jersey. During this time, he also served as Associate Conductor of the Continuo Arts Foundation in Summit, NJ; as Music Director for then-Princeton based Opera MODO; and as accompanist for the Princeton Pro Musica symphonic chorus. Since relocating to the Chicago area in August of 2018, he has been active as an organ recitalist and collaborative pianist, and also serves as Associate Conductor of the Northwest Choral Society. He held the post of Principal Organist & Choral Accompanist at Grace Church in Naperville, Illinois, from 2018 - 2019. As a professional choral artist, he is currently on the roster of the Grammy®-nominated Kinnara Ensemble, based in Princeton and Atlanta (for which he has also served as accompanist), and the choral ensemble Brevitas, based in Salt Lake City. Colao attended the Mannes College of Music, where he studied choral conducting with Mark Shapiro and vocal performance with Beth Roberts, as well as Westminster Choir College, where he studied organ with Matthew Lewis, and was a member of the renowned Westminster Choir, serving as a singer and accompanist on two national tours, and appearing with the Choir at the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC, where he made his professional operatic debut as ‘Le Chansonnier’ in Charpentier’s Louise. He holds the certificate of Associate of the American Guild of Organists, which he received in 2016. In his spare time, he enjoys composing and arranging for choirs and instruments, and is also an avid outdoorsman.

THE FISK ORGAN _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The culmination of a 2-year project to rebuild or replace the 1979 M. P. Moeller organ, our glorious new organ, built by C. B. Fisk Organs of Gloucester, Massachusetts, was installed September 2004 and dedicated February 25, 2005.

On a bright, sunny day – September 12, 2004 – a huge semi-truck from Gloucester, Massachusetts pulled up to our curb at 10:58 A.M. and after the 11 :00 A.M. service, we all gathered in the courtyard to enjoy Ron Franklin’s BBQ. After lunch 112 of us began to carry the thousands of organ parts into the church. The truck was empty by 9:30 P.M. that evening, and early next morning the assembly of the organ began. About five weeks later we heard the first voiced stop (8’ Octave of the Great) at a service.

The organ is direct mechanical action with electric slider chests for certain large pipes. The handsome case, designed by Charles Nazarian, is African mahogany, the console is quarter-sawn white oak, the draw-knobs are Cocobollo wood, the keys are bone and ebony, the front pipes are polished and hammered lead.

There are 24 voices, 33 ranks, 1,729 pipes, the manuals are 58-notes, the pedalboard is 30-notes, straight and concave. The stop-action is electrically controlled solenoids. There are 262 levels of SSL memory.
