Welcome!

No matter the season, Columbia County is filled with four seasons

of fun waiting to be discovered – and all just a short drive away.

Come explore the 11,000 acres of lakes, 16,000 acres of public

hunting and wildlife land, 49 miles of trout streams, 27 boat

landings and 3,000 campsites. The area is rich in native-American

history, and proudly showcases attractions of the early settlers

and explorers, and the role that all shared in shaping the area as

we see it today. A visit to the local Amish communities and their

businesses will help connect the past to the present as well.

Wonderful drives, such as Scenic Byway 60, or Highway 51, will

bring you within minutes of the National Scenic Ice Age Trail,

Wisconsin Dells, Lake Wisconsin, and the Merrimac Ferry.

Combine all of that with comfortable lodging, restaurants and

friendly people and you’ll understand why Columbia County

is another Wisconsin destination waiting to be explored.

Use this guide as your first step in planning a getaway to

Columbia County. More resources and travel information

are also available on TravelWisconsin.com.

On behalf of Wisconsin’s tourism industry, we

look forward to welcoming you soon.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Klett

With the Wisconsin River just a few feet away, this park has an appropriate name of Riverside. Columbia County and some private land owners donated the land to the City of Portage in 1867. The shelter was erected in 1924 and the city slogan of “Where the North Begins” can be found on the top of the shelter. The park is 2.1 acres and is located on East Wisconsin Street. This is a wayside park with a large open shelter, picnic tables, and benches.

The Portage High School Jazz Band and Portage Middle School Band will perform several outstanding selections. Both bands have an endless amount of talent, and we are very proud to have them with us tonight. Enjoy the beautiful music of our local young talents…..

June 13 Madison MaloneMadison Malone doesn’t shy away from any singing opportunity. The 18-year-old Portage High School Senior’s first public appearance was at a fourth grade talent show. “She sang, ‘Part of Your World’ from ‘The Little Mermaid,’” her father, Sean Malone said. More recently, Madison sang the Star Spangled Banner at a Mallards game. She has been recording music videos, which can be seen on YouTube. She said she is influenced by singers like

Gavin DeGraw, John Legend and Colbie Caillat Madison said, “I’ve been singing since I was 2 (years old).” She added, “I sing trendier songs, but they all tend to have meaning.”

Madison has now performed in all four seasons of the Concerts at the Portage Series, as well as last year’s TravelWisconsin.com Stage at the State Fair.

June 20 American Family Choir

The American Family Insurance Choir was established in October 1997 at the suggestion of an employee who thought it would be nice to perform some holiday music for the office. The choir’s initial performances were during the 1997 Holiday Season when they presented concerts at American Family’s National Headquarters and the Great Lakes Regional Building, both located in Madison.

Since then, many senior and healthcare centers throughout the Dane-Columbia County area have enjoyed regular holiday performances by the choir. In addition, the choir performs annually at the Holiday Fantasy in Lights Grand Lighting ceremony at Olin-Turville Park. This past holiday season we added the American Family Children’s Hospital and UW hospitals to our performance stops and plan to visit them again this spring.

The choir also has a non-holiday repertoire and has been included in the Sun Prairie Concerts in the Park and the Dean House Back Yard concerts. A particular highlight for the choir was singing the National

Anthem at several Milwaukee Brewers games. The choir has also performed for various charitable organizations in the Madison area including United Way and the American Cancer Society.

Classic Cowboy Songs, Trick Rope-spinning and Yodeling

Cowboy heroes and the Old West come to life when KG and The Ranger sing classic cowboy songs, yodel in harmony and spin a lariat! Known for their harmony singing and harmony yodeling, they bring a fresh new sound to the classic songs of the Hollywood cowboys. They were the Western Music Association “Harmony Yodeling Champions” in 2005, 2002 and 1999. In 2001 the Academy of Western Artists nominated them for “Rising Stars” and “Western Music Duo/group”, and they were nominated for the WMA’s 2002

“Crescendo” award. In 2007, KG was one of five finalists for the Academy of Western Artist’s Yodeler of the Year.

A husband and wife duo, Karen Gogolick and Rick Roltgen have been bringing the Old West to their Midwest home in Wisconsin since 1989. They first met while playing for a community barn dance, and brought together more than 20 years of musical experience, from folk music to barbershop, to create their present unique Western sound.

July 11 Prairie Smoke Blue Grass Band

July 18 Round The Bend

The History of Prairie Smoke Prairie Smoke Bluegrass band, from Portage, has performed at festivals, coffeehouses, clubs and private events throughout south central Wisconsin.

Inspired by Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, and Ralph Stanley; Prairie Smoke plays Traditional Bluegrass as well as original material. Dan Ableman (Banjo, harmonica, vocals), Nate Paske

(Fiddle, vocals), Matt Morse (Bass, vocals), Dale Peterson (Guitar, vocals) and Gregg Steinhaus (Guitar, vocals) combine to form the Bluegrass band Prairie Smoke. Dan and Dale formed a musical friendship that began 10 years ago. With Dan’s tenor vocals and hot Banjo playing and Dale on Guitar and lead vocals, they played various venues as a duet, not unlike Flatt and Scruggs, until 1998 when Matt joined to form core of Prairie Smoke. In 2000 Gregg joined the band and brought his rhythm guitar playing, baritone vocals and exceptional song writing abilities to the group. Then in 2002 Nate was brought on board with his talent of fiddle playing to round out the sound. With their tight, hard driving sound and vocal harmonies, Prairie Smoke continues to excite the audience with their style of traditional Bluegrass as well as their original work.

Sherry Crownhart, Don Engelhart, Carolyn Hegeler, Fred Newmann, and Patrick Spaay, of Round the Bend, blend Bluegrass, Old-Timey, and Western Swing in captivating versions of traditional songs that evoke nostalgia, love lost and found, and barn-dancing fun. Spirited vocals, tight harmonies, inventive instrumentals

and down-home humor have delighted audiences of all ages at parties, festivals, community concerts, weddings, and senior centers. Tailoring selection of tunes to hosts’ requests, the band offers concert-style shows and loves to have a good time with audiences.

Aug 1 Late 4 Dinner

July 25 Main Street WisdomThe town of Wisdom would make the perfect country song.

It’s a small place on the edge of Big Sky Country where there’s little traffic along its one main street. The type of town where you can get a good cowboy hat.

It’s where Carleen Wild found a few things one day while living in Missoula, Mont., getting her start in broadcast journalism. And it was a story that led her to Wisdom.

What she eventually came away with from the town was a good friend - and a lot of cowboy hats.

When Wild decided to form a country band in 2009, the Poynette native turned to Wisdom for some inspiration when the band couldn’t agree on a name.

And Main Street Wisdom took the stage with Wild on vocals and former Channel 3 alum Dan Smith on guitar.

People may recognize Wild from her three broadcasts a day as the NBC 15 anchor, and also her time at WISC.

Main Street Wisdom also includes Smith’s son, Ben, who has been playing a guitar since he was a kid. Smith said he brought home a guitar and showed him three chords.

The group, which also includes Greg Arenz, Chris Krueger and Jim Usleman, hopes to have an album of original material out some

time in the near future.

Craig Spychalla, WiscNews.com, contributed to this bio.

“The word most often used to describe Late 4 Dinner is “fun”. They have fun and their audience has fun every time they perform. You will love their selection of music, their beautiful voices, and their rich harmonies. Audiences of all ages have enjoyed hearing Late 4 Dinner perform every thing from Elvis and the Beatles to Jimmy Buffett and Johnny Cash. The band is made up of Mike Ostrowski, Sharon Kibby, John Guelig, Dennis Harkins and Jack Harkins. So sit back, relax and enjoy what promises to be a very fun evening with Late 4 Dinner.”

Aug 8 Big & Little

Aug 15 The Flannels

Focused on country, this father and daughter combination will bring country to the crowd; From current hits to loved oldies. “Little” Karlie Korish has been singing since she was 6. She has gained much experience from musicals at the Portage Center for the Arts and her church’s praise band. This 14 year old is never afraid of the spotlight. “Big” Tony Korish has enjoyed the karaoke scene. Starting off with XXLT Entertainment and soon having Karlie join him in “Big and Little”. Be ready to be put on the spot when he goes out into the crowd. From Garth Brooks and George Strait to Taylor Swift and the Dixie Chicks, these two will cover a variety of country music. So sit back, relax, and enjoy an evening filled with country music from Big and Little!

The Flannels (Colleen Murphy, Terri Schider, and Holly Powers), have been friends, confidantes, and “sisters” for over 25

years. The Flannels have performed for a variety of audiences and have gotten rave reviews with their repertoire of swing, comic,

and standard songs. Mike Powers and Joel Engelland started performing together in the early 70’s in the Wisconsin Dells at The

Saloon and Fort Dells and have since performed with several groups around the area. Audiences keep coming back to hear the excellence in performance and musical style these 2 gentlemen bring to the stage. Over the years, these 5 talented performers have gotten together to bring sold out shows to the Zona Gale Theatre and most recently, to the Portage Center for the Arts to benefit the River Haven Homeless Shelter. They are extremely pleased to be working together again.

Aug 22 Marcy & the Highlights

Doug Brown and Michelle DuVall have earned a reputation for playing some of today’s most swinging and refined jazz. Whether performing as a duo, leading their “rock solid quintet” (Isthmus 2003), or letting loose with “Get Down, Mr. Cat!” an eight piece tour de force that “knows how to swing, as anyone who caught their eye-popping appearance at August’s Jazz at Five series can attest” (Isthmus 2002). Michelle and Doug bring fresh new

energy and unbridled joy to the timeless classics of thirties and forties jazz!

“Get Down, Mr. Cat! is not a jamming kind of group,” says Brown. “Most of the tunes are arranged fairly thoroughly. The emphasis is on the song, and swinging hard.”

“We’re trying to play great old songs with young, new energy,” Brown says. “We don’t look at our material as museum pieces, but as songs that still resonate.”

The Highlights have been performing in the Madison area for over 2 decades. Their energetic performances include 50’s and 60’s, country, Latin, blues, rock, standards and much more.

Over the years, the Highlights have received top honors in the Madison area Battle of the Bands and have written, produced and recorded their own tunes here and in Nashville. They have been featured at the Art Fair on the Square and the Taste of Madison. But what they love best – is playing music and entertaining and it shows every time they perform!

While all hail from Wisconsin, they bring very diverse musical backgrounds to form a fun time for dancing or listening. The magic of the Highlights is that all of the players can play and enjoy all sorts of music – so their rhythm and blues sounds like rhythm and blues, their country sounds like country and their 50’s sounds like 50’s.

Most important, the Highlights are usually game to try anything once to ensure that the crowd has a great time! Variety music, dancing and great fun…that’s the Highlights!
