IT MonitorYour monthly guide to salary and recruitment trends in the UK IT market
This month’s IT Monitor brings you the most up-to-date and comprehensive salary information from across the IT industry, complete with this month’s vacancy trends and analysis.
After a slow start to the year, the IT industry looks to be on the rise. February charted a positive course for IT professionals, as vacancies and salaries rose across all sectors - particularly in areas that previously relaxed their hiring of permanent workers; most notably retail and the public sector.
The boost to IT employment within the retail sector is largely attributable to the pending 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, as organisations prepare for the anticipated increase in demand on their IT infrastructure and systems, with an influx of tourists expected in the UK.
The public sector veered from its usual course of employing contractors to align with project budgets rather than permanent salaries, by increasing its hiring of permanent staff this month - marking a decline in demand for IT contractors.
While a complete return to the previously dizzy heights of IT recruitment is yet to be seen, the positive shoots of recovery in Q1 point to an increase in both employer confidence and heightened demand for quality IT professionals.
Candidates should take comfort in the fact that the market is still largely candidate led, with the majority of skill sets much in demand.
Regards,
Sid Barnes, Executive DirectorComputer People
March 2012
Highlights from February
• Both permanent and contract IT vacancies increased.
• Permanent opportunities soared in the public sector, while contractor vacancies dwindled.
• Permanent roles increased across media, new media and creative, while contractor vacancy levels experienced a slight decline.
• Telecoms boomed across the board as permanent and contractor roles peaked, along with retail.
• Month-on-month permanent salaries remain steady, while contractor pay rates rise.
• Developers and project managers emerge as the month’s most in demand professionals.
• Interim IT directors and SAP contract professionals come out on top with February’s highest pay increases.

Permanent vacancies remain steady as Q1 progresses
Overall, advertised permanent vacancies increased marginally this month, with a rise of 0.16% on this time last year. While minimal, this increase - and perhaps more notably the absence of any decrease - signals confidence in the hiring of permanent staff and a greater commitment to the implementation of future IT strategy. Encouragingly, this increase in demand for permanent IT professionals means that we can expect many new projects over the coming months.
Contractor vacancies increased in February by 0.42%, equating to 24 additional advertised jobs. While we witnessed a slight decline in vacancy levels for contractors across most sectors, the upward trend for contractor employment is still evident.

Public Sector
Banking, insurance and financeWith an increase of 0.20% for permanent roles, and a decline of 1.28% in contractor vacancies, the banking, insurance and financial sector experienced a mixed month. While permanent hiring levels increased steadily over the past six months, they are now starting to plateau.
The decline in contractor vacancies seen over the past two months continued as expected, as we approach the end of the financial year and contracts and projects come to a close. We are therefore likely to see increased headcount at the beginning of the financial year, as budgets are approved for the year ahead.
RetailSimilarly, the retail sector experienced a dip in contractor vacancies - falling by 3.70% in the month of February, in line with the end of the financial year. But with a rise of 5.98% across permanent vacancies, the message is one of positivity.

As London 2012 approaches, companies are addressing their permanent hiring needs to meet the demand occasioned by heightened tourism. It’s likely that the Games will have a positive impact on the economy longer term, which could spell job creation in the IT industry long after the Games.
TelecomsThe telecoms industry continued its upward trend, as both permanent (up 7.31%) and contractor (up 1.06) vacancies increased; largely due to new budgets being approved after a thawing in January. With a number of telecoms related projects on the horizon - needed to increase broadband width for the UK - the market is set to peak this year.
Media, new media and creativeAfter a dismal start to the year - where vacancies fell by 8.51% - media, new media and creative bounced back this month with an 11.81% increase in jobs across the sector. This is attributable in large part to an on-trend emphasis from many companies on their social and digital media strategy. Those with social and digital expertise then will continue to be in high demand.
While permanent vacancies increased in February, contract vacancies declined by 0.65% due to the shedding of excess budget before the start of the new financial year.
Public sectorIt’s good news for the public sector as February marked an overall increase in the number of permanent vacancies (up 27.91%); perhaps owing to the need for departments to utilise excess budget before the new financial year.
Resulting, contractor vacancies fell by 10.19% to make way for permanent hiring as projects come to an end.
Monthly salary trends
Permanent salaries rose by 0.07% in February — continuing the recent trend of slight monthly increases. Contract salaries also continued to increase this month, with a 0.68% rise.

Number of vacancies: all sectors
While the beginning of 2012 has been without the significant salary increases experienced at the start of 2011, we continue to see demand for contractors, along with an increase in pay for interim and project IT staff and management.
.Net/C# experienced the greatest increase in permanent salaries this month; while the biggest decline was recorded at 0.13% in web development. This decrease is a continuing trend sparked by the outsourcing of web requirements by many organisations to media, new media and creative agencies and offshore.
There was high demand for interim IT directors (up 3.80%) and SAP practitioners (up 2.43%) in February, as new board members were needed to implement streamlining initiatives across a number of industries.

SAP practitioners in the UK continue to be in high demand, preferred over contractors in mainland Europe because of the high value of their experience.

Jobs in demand
Continuing the trend seen in previous months, developers and project managers retain their status as the most in demand professionals. We are also seeing demand for architects and business analysts increase as companies aim to innovate through new product developments - creating the need for business analysts to streamline activity.

Wrap up
With vacancies on the rise, permanent salaries remaining steady, and contract rates increasing, positive shoots are undoubtedly emerging across the whole of the IT sector.
As the new financial year approaches it will be interesting to see how the market reacts and how generous or meagre the budgets (if any) are given to hiring managers.
The positive impact of this summer’s Olympic and Paralympic Games will start to be felt as the year progresses, as will the government’s commitment to IT spend.
With all of this in mind, we could be looking at a very positive year for the market, with increased growth and job creation.
