Your mouse lets you control what you do on your computer.  

A wire might connect the mouse to the computer, or you might be using a wireless mouse.

There are lots of designs of computer mouse. 

Most will have a left and right button.

Many also have a scroll wheel between the buttons.

Hold the mouse gently in the hand you use for writing.

Don't grip the mouse too hard.

The mouse moves a cursor on your computer screen. The cursor lets you choose and move items on your screen.

The cursor changes, depending on what you are doing: Arrow: moving and choosing

Hand: clicking on internet links

Circle/hourglass: waiting for the computer when it is ‘busy’

I marker: showing your position in a document

Use the left button on the mouse to choose something on screen: 

Move the mouse so the cursor is on the icon or file you want to choose.

Click the left button once.

Double-click the left button to open a program or file.

Move the mouse so the cursor is on the program or file you want to open.

Click the left button quickly twice.

Use your mouse to ‘drag and drop’ things on screen.

Position the cursor on what you want to move.

Press the left button.

Holding the button down, move the mouse until your item is where you want it.

The right button on your mouse can open a ‘pop-up’ menu.

You can use the right button to change your screen’s appearance.

Use the left button to choose from the menu that appears.

A scroll wheel lets you move what you see on screen up and down. 

This is helpful for long web pages or documents.

Laptops use a touch pad instead of a mouse.

There are left and right buttons above or below the pad. Use these like the buttons on your mouse.

Swipe your finger on the pad to move your cursor.
