Bombardier transportation, as a member
of the Bombela consortium, provided the impressive 80 km rapid rail transit system
that connects Johannesburg, tshwane (Pretoria) and the or tambo
international Airport in South Africa.
In a contract awarded in 2006, Bombardier was
responsible for the design and supply of the core
electrical and mechanical systems, including a fleet of
96 BoMBarDIEr* ElEctrostar* vehicles, and is now
providing 15 years of maintenance services.
The commuter system features the BoMBarDIEr*
cItYFlo* 250 train control technology, well proven on
transportation systems in europe. The ElEctrostar
vehicles, of which most underwent final assembly in
South Africa, were designed for commuter operation
and are capable of speeds of up to 160 km/h.
The project was a Public Private Partnership, consisting
of financing, designing, building and operations and
maintenance of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link.
