MAKE A DIFFERENCE: WORK WITH A COMMUNITY ORGANISATION IN YOGYAKARTA, INDONESIA PROJECT DATES: 30 JUNE—21 JULY 2019 PROJECT DETAILS—How does it work? You will be placed in one of AVI’s community-based partner organisations in Yogyakarta, Indonesia If placed in PKBI Youth Canter ( PKBI - English translation Indone- sian Family Planning Association): PKBI works to campaign for workmen’s rights and family planning issues. They believe women’s rights should be equally as important to their reproductive objectives, and that safety should be central to both reproductive health and women’s lives generally. PKBI also work with adolescents and marginalised women. PKBI Youth Centre aims to support young people to ac- tively engage in programs and raise awareness through events and collaboration on projects related to family planning and reproductive issues. It’s a place for young people to gather. CVC Global students will work in the gallery at PKBI Youth Centre and will develop an event in collaboration with PKBI, and develop a marketing campaign, including research for the organisation and creating video content. Students will spend 3 weeks at PKBI in Yogyakarta, and 1 week prior to departure researching and preparing in Australia Suitable for students studying Arts, Marketing & Com- munications, Public Health, Women's Health. If placed in Yabbiekayu: Yabbiekayu is a social enterprise—they use commercial strategies and the power of the marketplace to advance their social, environmental and human justice agendas, rather than just maximising profit for external stakehold- ers. Yabbiekayu is learning how to create and live in an eco- friendly community. Their vision is to make a unique con- tribution to Yogyakarta tourism while having a lasting im- pact . They hope to promote a viable alternative to the typically resource hungry hospitality industry. As such, they have a strong focus on low technology, solar power, eco- friendly and organic farming practice and ‘slow’ food. Students will need to have a keen interest for environmen- tal issues, solar power systems and farming practices. CVC Global students will get their hands dirty supporting the team to maintain the edible garden, nursery and natural pool. They will also support the Garden Manager to cre- ate an edible landscape garden and work on fauna & flora projects aimed at labelling all plants and animals in the Yabbiekayu Small Animals Dictionary. Science or Engineering students will support staff in ex- periments for sustainable low technology and passive solar installation. Students will spend 3 weeks at Yabbiekayu, staying at their homestay. The week prior to their in-country project, they will spend 1 week in Australia doing research and prepar- ing. Suitable for students studying Arts, Marketing & Commu- nications, Business., Science, Engineering. The Faculty of Arts is offering an exciting international community volunteering opportunity in partnership with AVI, a respected volunteer sending organisation and international development agency. AVI works with individuals, organisations and communities in response to locally identified community priorities. Students enrolled in this subject will be making a contribution to local communi- ties through project work, research and engagement with locally run development organisations in Indonesia. Students will be enrolled in the Community Volunteering - Global subject and will be awarded 12.50 credit points on satisfactory completion. The subject is available to undergraduate students in their second or third year of study. Please note: This subject has a quota and enrolment is not automatic. You must meet specific selection criteria, and be assessed through interview and other pre-departure requirements before being offered a place in the subject. The subject will incur standard tuition fees* plus additional costs such as travel and accommodation, and a program fee. Please note that University mobility funding is available. COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING - GLOBAL Project details will be further developed based on student skills, experience and interests. All projects are locally led. This means students will be responding to the needs of the local partner organisation.

**CSP students can defer costs to their HELP loan as per standard

enrolment process. New Colombo Plan funding is available to

eligible students for up to $3000

A program fee will apply, in addition to standard tuition fees for the subject. NOTE: Australian Government New Colombo Plan funding of $3000 is available to eligible students.

The subject is available to all other undergraduate students as breadth. To be eligible to apply you must be enrolled in the second or third year of an undergraduate program with the University of Melbourne

Normally an average of 75% in relevant second and third year level subjects and approval of the subject coordinator Dr Elizabeth Lakey is essential

Shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake an interview. Selection into the program is subject to a National Police Check, medical check and satisfactory completion of the pre-departure program through AVI and the Univer-

sity.
