Our Mission The Community Outreach Program of

Roanoke strives to improve the quality of

life of children and their families by

providing a safe and nurturing

environment where all God’s children are

mentored academically, spiritually,

emotionally and physically.

A Brief History The Community Outreach Program was

started in September of 1989 by the

United Methodist Women of Trinity UMC,

as an outreach to the children living in

downtown neighborhoods. They met once

each week and had a warm meal together.

As word spread about the program, more

and more volunteers wanted to help.

Today, UMCOPR serves 100 children of low

socioeconomic status in the inner city of

Roanoke, VA.

From September to May, children are

transported from their homes three nights

each week by staff in vans, while a group

of volunteers is waiting at the church and

have prepared the meals the children will

eat for dinner. After dinner, from 6:30-

7:30pm, children are engaged in learning:

math, spelling, reading, specialty and bible

lessons, and even physical education. The

programming is varied and tailored to

individual needs and goals.

Our Services

Evening Meals

Each evening a meal is prepared and

served by special groups of volunteers.

Tutoring

At least one hour each evening is spent on

learning math, spelling, reading, specialty

and bible lessons, and even physical

education. The Community Outreach

Program uses education modules that

teach through many media, such as art,

computers, games, music and stories. Each

module has a rotation format curriculum

that allows children of all ages the ability to

learn in many different ways.

Library

Volunteers collect, sort and catalog books

for children to check out as their “ticket to

the world”.

Summer Camp Each child who participates in the program

is eligible for a scholarship to attend

summer camp at Camp Alta Mons Camp

and Retreat Center. Contact us to donate

transportation and the cost of one week of

camp for a needy child.

Christmas Angels To celebrate the joy of Christmas and the

gift of Jesus Christ, volunteers take a

Christmas Angel and fulfill the clothes or

toy Christmas Wish for that child with $50

of gifts. This powerful program is very

rewarding for all involved.

Clothes Closet Donations of dress code appropriate clean

clothing in good condition is sorted by size

and distributed to children.

Weekend Meals Every Thursday from September to May,

each child receives a zip-lock bag of food

including two snacks, two juices, two

breakfasts, two lunches and two dinners to

sustain them for the weekend. Food items

are carefully selected to be nutritious and

easy for young children to eat without

preparation.

Be a Volunteer UMCOPR is nothing without the dedication of its Meal Volunteers that ensure meals are purchased, delivered, prepared, served, and even cleaned up anywhere from one day each month to once a year. Their services go beyond caring for their neighbor-- they are serious about service to those in poverty. If you have a group who would like to sign up for a meal slot, we would love to hear from you. Week in and week out our Tutors ensure that each child learns and grows at their own unique pace. Book after book our Listeners patiently hear children beginning to read, form thoughts, and dream dreams through learning to read. The Board of Directors are dedicated volunteers in the background who keep programs and planning on track. We are always in need of people who want to share the gift of their time and talents with the children at UMCOPR. Please consider helping a child who needs a listening ear, a warm meal, or someone to double-check homework.
