Council mergers
Last Tuesday the NSW Premier Mike Baird made an announcement to Councils
giving them 30 days to reconsider their position in relation to amalgamations before a final decision is made.
Ashfield Council is financially sustainable and has the necessary operational and strategic capacity to deliver high quality services for the local Ashfield community. Our services are recognised as models
of leading practice and, by the State Government’s own TCorp (NSW Treasury Corporations) assessment, Ashfield is in a sound financial position. However, Ashfield Council does not meet the State Government’s arbitrary ‘scale’ criteria due
to our smaller population.
Council consulted with our community
earlier this year about views on
amalgamations, receiving over 1700 feedback forms and other submissions. 46% of community members indicated a preference for Ashfield Council to stand alone, 36% indicated an amalgamation with Leichhardt and Marrickville Councils would be preferable, with the remaining 18% indicating a preference for mergers with 5 other Inner West Councils; Burwood, Strathfield, Marrickville, Leichhardt and the City of Canada Bay.
As the Government seems determined to significantly reduce the number
of councils in NSW, an extraordinary meeting was held on Monday 26 october to determine if Ashfield Council would seek further talks with its neighbouring councils about a possible amalgamation. Details of the Council resolution will be made available shortly.
