In February of 2008, a friend of mine told me about a blog she was reading and suggested that I check it out. I did, and was so inspired I started The Skoog Farm Journal on the 22nd of that month. It has cer-tainly changed my daily routine, as I have not missed one day of posting in all these years. Since that time I have picked up 337 followers, over 342,000 hits, almost 23,000 public comments and have made over 5,000 posts.

How did it happen? I looked at the first blog, “Bedlam Farm” by author Jon Katz, and said “I can do that.” Within an hour I started writing about what I do everyday. Because I love photography, it is more about the pictures than writing. The next thing I knew, I starting getting com-ments. Could not believe that people were interested in my days on and off the farm. I would look at their blogs in return and started see-

ing some of the same names over and over in their lists of favorites. I checked them out, especially those involved with horses. Our common interests led me to communicating with people in the United States, France, England, Italy, Sweden, New Zealand, Niger, Saudi Arabia, Aus-tralia, Canada and more. It’s amaz-ing, how you end up with a blog list of so many like minded peopled who are interesting and supportive. Many of my “friends” leave comments for me one to seven times per week and vice versa.

I have had the opportunity to meet face to face with six of my online friends. One visited from Kentucky, another from Colorado and the others were within 50 miles of our farm. We are all still in touch on a regular basis. Several years ago, Sara, from Kentucky, came up to this area to help a friend (who had over 50 ewes who were about to give birth) and I said if she would stop here I would make her dinner.

She and her dog took me up on it and we have been friends ever since. Her husband has joined her for three or four more visits and I actually found her a horse in Kendall. We touch base online or by phone at least three times every week. She lives on a sheep farm with horses, dogs, cats and chickens.

Right now she is raising a bottle fed lamb … Liddy (Liddle Biddie), and they spend 24 hours a day together.

When you read someone’s blog on a regular basis, you really get to know a lot about them. Not only that, you can learn so much about different cultures … things that you may never have seen otherwise. For example, I have communicated for years with Esther, who lives in Niger. Her par-ents (from Sweden) set up a founda-tion and have taught the people liv-ing in that area to successfully grow their own food.

They have also set up a school for the children, which is having a huge impact on their futures. I’ve seen photos of families going to wed-dings all wearing the same colored clothing, horse racing in the desert, Esther riding camels and more.

I just got a comment from Mike and Ann, who live in England, saying that it is “perfectly possible to grow friendships with people you may never meet, but get to know.” They also invited us for a week long visit in their home.

Super Friends! by David Hull

While cleaning out my parents’ attic last spring, I found a long-lost treasure – my old comic book collection; Spiderman, The Justice League, Conan the Barbarian, Silver Surfer, Tomb of Dracula, Swamp Thing, even Archie & Jughead.

The only downside to comic books that I remember is that I never had enough money to buy all the comics I wanted. There were so many to choose from and my measly allowance only went so far. However, recently, wandering around Barnes & Noble, I took a nostalgic look at the comic book rack. Comic books these days are $3.99! Back in my day, I thought they were overpriced at 20 cents! Stored along with those classic Marvel and DC issues (which, according to the 2015 Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide are worth far less than I imagined) I found some home-made comic books from when I was 12-years-old.

I met my friends, Brian and Mitchell, on the playground on the first day of summer vacation. As we talked, our conversation rolled around to typical comic book subjects – which super power you wished you had or who was stronger; Superman or the Hulk.

And we all complained about the cost of comic books. Then we came up with a plan to create our own comic books and trade them. That way we’d each get two new comic books to read every week and all we needed was paper, a stapler and pens and markers.

For the next few weeks we each finished our latest issue for the Monday morning trade-off.

Brian invented a super-hero team called The Monkey Men, starring Commander Chimp, Gorilla Guy, Lemur Lass and Baboon Boy. His stories weren’t original; he stole them from old Fantastic Four comic books, but his parents bought him a box of 150 markers for his birthday, so his issues were brilliantly colorful.

Mitchell created a comic book called The Adventures of Power Punch about a hero who had nuclear-powered, super-strong fists. Brian’s spelling was atrocious, but his illustrations of Power Punch’s fists colliding with the villain’s planes and rocket ships were awesome.

My own comic was a science fiction creation entitled Star Cars from Mars; all about gigantic automobile-like aliens that invaded Earth and attempted to destroy architectural wonders, like the

Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China and the Statue of Liberty. Scientific genius Professor Porsche and his heroic assistant, Frank Ferrari raced around the globe battling the evil aliens wherever they appeared. Years later, I always felt the guy who invented Transformers stole my idea.

I was so excited to find the complete run, all eight issues, of Star Cars from Mars stored in the attic. I also found the #1 issue of The Monkey Men that somehow had been left in my possession. And I have a very rare cross-over issue of The Adventures of Power Punch in which Power Punch battles the Star Cars on top of Hoover Dam.

That certainly was a creative summer. Unfortunately, the first week of September brought the start of junior high school for Brian, Mitchell and myself. I was too busy with homework, after-school activities and my newspaper delivery route to continue with my comic book creations. Brian and Mitchell felt the same way.

So, The Monkey Men, Power Punch and the Star Cars ended their run much too soon. After high school graduation, I lost touch with Brian and Mitchell, so those simple, crude comic books, created during that summer of delightful friendship, are now precious and valuable collectors items to me.

It’s probably impossible to quantify the impact that friends have on your life. As human beings, we are social creatures who naturally desire to interact with each other.

I think my best and dearest friends are the ones from whom I’ve learned the most. I have had the privilege of knowing many wonderful people who have taught me so much; who have in-spired me, and for whom I have tremendous respect.

I’ve learned more from my good friends over the years than anything I ever learned sitting in a classroom: the joy and fun of writing; how to bake homemade bread; how to produce a “wrap-around” story for radio news; an appreciation for the music of Jackson Browne; and how to share God’s gifts with others.

From a college friend who grew up in Vietnam and who lived in a war-torn country as a little girl at the same time I was enjoying a plac-id life here in elementary school, I heard a first-hand account of what it was like to have to flee from your home and seek refuge in a new and strange country during the airlift in Saigon before its fall. From another college friend, I learned a first-hand account of what life is like in Israel for young people who have to spend compulsory time during their college-age years in the mili-tary, a gun always present at their side.

From a friend and fellow mother, I learned what it is to em-brace God’s will, even if it means losing a seven-year battle with brain cancer and not living to see your 40th birthday or your eleven children grow to adulthood.

Friends like these have made me grateful for my blessings and have helped me to empathize with those very different from my-self and whose lives have been drastically different from my own.

As adults, our work often leads to new and wonderful friends. I had the privilege of working with many talented and fun-to-be-with people in Rochester radio early in my career and my free-lance writing work has brought me into contact with so many amazing members of our community who I consider to be my friends.

There are those in public service who care deeply about their communities and become engaged in the public sphere to serve others and to give back. There are local business people who offer the highest quality goods and services in charming shops along our main streets backed by the best customer service you could find anywhere. There are the heroes in our police depart-ments, fire departments and ambulance corps.

Even my work-related supervisors/bosses have become friends, offering advice, guidance, understanding, relieving anxi-eties, and helping me to become better at what I do. And in the end, as a writer, I’ve found that my editor is my very best friend.

Friendship: Sometimes I can end. I can end when people move away and when people and their interests change. Sometimes you can feel strange talking to an old best friend after they have moved away. Fights and gossip are also a cause to the ending of friendships.

Friendship: I can be found at all ages, but as you grow I can get stronger or dissipate.

7th and 8th grade: What is the difference between a true friend and a best friend?

Friendship: When I am true and when I am a best friend we look very similar, but when I am true I stick with you for a very long time. When I am your best friend I am only really temporary. We can grow apart in the future easily. You have similar interests and beliefs but won’t stay together. When I am true there is a true sincere care for the friend, there is also respect. You can argue and still stay close, and they will defend you at any cost and time for any reason.

Friendship: When you have a true friend, you feel that you can trust them and you know they won’t judge you. They can make you feel happy and make even the worst situations a little brighter and better. There is a special bond that true friends have that allow you to count on that person especially when things are changing, they won’t leave you behind.

Friendship: I begin with wanting to get to know another person and sharing common interests.

Friendship: Yes, I can change over time. Sometimes people get to know each other very well, that can be good or bad. Sometimes knowing each other well can lead to fights or arguments. Distance is a factor with the change in me as well, especially when a friend moves away. Additionally, adding people to the circle can change me. Over time I become a strong bond. When you are younger you can share toys, when you are older you share your lives and beliefs and feelings.

The Best Friend Let Downby Mark Ball

Sometimes even your friends let you down. Just ask my best friend Tom.

It was another blustery Rochester winter, and when you can’t wish the green grass back into being, you join in with the rest of them at the local ski slopes.

None of us had Olympic aspirations, but Tom and Dave were good enough to have free

reign on the hills. After surveying the scene, I de-cided a lesson was in order. While Tom and Dave hit the slopes, I followed a group of young chil-dren and se-nior citizens over to a tow-ering moun-

tain known by the locals as “The Bunny Hill.”

After an hour of group work on this death-defying cliff, the instructor dismissed the toddlers and the geriatrics and suggested that I stay for some more instruction, maybe more appropriately paced for my ability. She slowed it down a bit more.

At the end of my half day of training, I confi-dently skied over to the chairlift just in time to meet Dave and Tom. They asked me where I had been, but I deferred to their adventures. We got almost to the front of the line when I accidentally crossed my skis and fell sideways, bending one pole and spearing myself with the other. They hurried to get me back to my feet and guide me over to the chairlift.

I was still trying to straighten out my gear when the chair came around and hit me in the back of the legs. My skis were stuck be-hind Tom who was in the center of the chair between me and Dave. As we went forward my skis began to push Tom’s feet sliding him off the chair. The chair continued to climb and Dave and I both grabbed a shoulder of Tom’s jacket, but it was too late.

He was hanging off of the front of the seat and our arms were shaking from the exhaus-tion of trying to hold him up. However, at this point, we were way too high up and Tom was a dear friend, so there was no way we were going to abandon him.

“Let go of me!” he shrieked, and against our better judgment, we did.

He dropped like a rocket returning to the earth. Up from the ground rose the most amazing cloud of white snow I have ever wit-nessed. As the ski patrol, now little black dots below us, raced to Tom’s aide, even from our high height I could still hear Tom saying some unkind things about me.

But I forgive him. Sometimes we say things that let the other down. But true friends are always there to pick each other up again – or we send the ski patrol.
