What is Traffic Calming?

Placement of physical measures in the roadway to decrease vehicle operating speeds.
Traffic calming enhances communities by making roadways safer for all users.
Note: we are not able to install new stop signs!

Existing Traffic Calming in Fairfax County

FCDOT and the District Supervisor’s office collaborate with citizens on community-initiated projects.
The community sends its request for traffic calming to the District Supervisor.
FCDOT conducts basic eligibility review prior to study.
Project Initiation

To be eligible for the program a road must:
• Be in the state system of highways owned and maintained by VDOT.
• Be classified as a local, collector, or arterial road.
• Function as a residential street.
• Have a speed limit of 25 miles per hour (MPH).
Eligibility Criteria

500 – 6,000 vehicles in 24 hours(Both directions combined)
85th Percentile Speed ≥ 35 MPH(One or more directions)

FCDOT conducts a formal traffic count and speed study.

The community forms a task force to collaborate with FCDOT.
FCDOT conducts a site visit and develops a draft traffic calming plan.
The task force offers initial feedback on the draft plan.
Making the Plan

Traffic calming devices must fit on the roadway as it currently exists.
Vertical traffic calming devices must be at least 400 feet apart from each other and existing stop conditions.
Horizontal traffic calming devices must be 200 feet from other measures.
Traffic calming devices must have 150 feet for adequate sight distance.
Look for opportunities to combine measures for added effectiveness.

Based on this feedback, the task force decides whether to amend the plan or advance to the ballot phase.

The endorsed resolution is forwarded to VDOT for their final review.
