Think of the community helpers that we have been talking about and the vehicles that they drive. Design Challenge: You will design and build a vehicle that a community helper would use for work. Your vehicle must: be at least 10 one-inch cubes long. be at least 5 one-inch cubes tall. have a door that opens and closes. be able to travel the length of 108 one-inch cubes (3 yardsticks). Materials You can use some or all of the materials listed. Tools You can use some or all of the listed tools. • cardboard boxes • scissors • cereal boxes, etc. • pencil • construction paper • one-inch cubes • egg cartons • yardsticks • straws • wheels • cardboard For Adult Use Only: • glue • paper drill • tape • dowels or lollipop sticks • clothes pins

Community Helpers & Their Vehicles We have been learning about community helpers. Think of the community helpers that we have been talking about and the vehicles that they drive. Design Challenge: You will design and build a vehicle that a community helper would use for work. Your vehicle must:

Teacher Hints:
• This activity may be used during or after a discussion of community helpers. It
may also be used when discussion transportation and/or goods and services.
• Remember that “vehicle” refers to transporting structures that can move on land, water, or in the air.
• Graphics relating to tools used by some community helpers were included on the
challenge page. These graphics can be used to brainstorm lists of people that might use the tools in their work. Students can decide if the worker fits the definition of “community helpers” you have provided your students. Provide additional graphics/pictures if you think they would enhance your discussion.
• No pictures of vehicles were included on the design brief. This encourages the
students to brainstorm more than one idea. Make a list on chart paper of all of the names of vehicles that the students brainstorm. Post this in the classroom.
• Provide books about community helpers. Students can search though the books
for pictures to guide them in their designing and building activity.
