TERM 2 PREP NEWS 2017 Our Inquiry- Community Helpers This term’s unit of inquiry is ‘Community Helpers’. We will be focusing on the various helpers in our community and what their roles consist of. We will also be investigating what defines a community and the students’ roles within one. We have enjoyed a visit from the Firefighters and their fire engine already, and have the following events in coming weeks. - Week 5 Visit from a Police Officer Tuesday May 16 th - Week 6 Dentist on Monday May 22 nd - Week 7 Street Scene (Road Safety RACV) on Monday May 29 th - Week 7 Visit to the Post Office at Centreway (weather pending). Please note students will need a self- addressed envelope with a stamp for our visit to the post office. More details will be provided closer to the date. Any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to ask in person or via email (emails on the reverse side of note). Please allow 48 hours or 2 business days for a response. Thank you The Prep Team. Literacy and Numeracy In Reading this term, students will be focusing on using various reading strategies to find clues in texts to help them read new words. Encouraging students to use pictures to assist them in thinking about what is happening in the story is extremely beneficial, and part of reading at this stage. Along with clues from pictures, students are also encouraged to use the initial sounds in words to assist them. Recognition of letter sounds is also vitally important and further revision of these at home is encouraged. In Writing students will continue to develop their understanding of hearing and recording sounds in words using the alphabet. We will also continue to look closely at how we can make new words by changing the initial sounds (sat, cat or bin, fin) as well as some frequently used words (can, like, went etc.). Please keep in mind that writing is still at a very early stage so be sure to celebrate and support their efforts at home. Numeracy this term will investigate 2D shape, location and ordering numbers. 2D shape involves various investigations around what defines a 2D shape (closed, flat, straight or curved sides) and how they are frequently used in our environment. Location focuses on the language used when finding an object or giving direction. Students will familiarise themselves with terms such as besides, below, beneath etc. Number formation and correctly counting and comparing small groups of objects will complete Numeracy for this term.

For those parents and families that have not yet accessed their student’s profile on the app, Seesaw, please do so. Often preps may forget to pass on information about their day and Seesaw is a great way to jog their memory. Seesaw is also a great way for teachers to communicate quick messages about upcoming events, notices or

important information. Your child’s classroom teacher will have the login details if you need them.

PMP
