Rationale:Many children see community helper only as those people who wear uniform or have
jobs that we see or hear about on TV. Children often do not realize the many
other workers who contribute to a successful community.
• Introduction on the theme community helpers by
reading a big book entitled ‘On the town: A Community
Adventure’ by Judith Caseley
Synopsis:
Sparked by a school assignment, a boy and his mother
keep track of the people and places in the
neighborhood. The child's notebook entries appear
throughout in lively watercolor, colored pencil and ink
illustrations.
• Children will be directed to learning corners to explore further.
• Teacher will bring the children to the community library to look for more
books on community helpers.
• At the same time, they will get to see how it is like working as a librarian.
•Teacher introduces some common community helpers.
• Children explore the roles played by these people.
• Teacher focuses the roles and service by the policeman.
• Children will go on field-trip to a police station.

•Children take a trip around the fire station.•Return to class and discuss, reflect and review lesson through the learning corners designed as a fire station theme.
•Children plan and prepare for a thank you party for the community helpers in their community.•They will be involved in group planning and decoration of their center.
