Building Appropriate Technology from Discarded Materials Building Solar Cookers and Solar Dryers Course 2 Day Course- Saturday and Sunday 31st January 2010 Green Skills held a successful two day workshop in building solar cookers and solar dryers at the Denmark Tip Shop on the weekend of Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st of January, 2010. 17 people turned out for the weekend was a positive start for the Tip Shop's new educational facility. Participants gained useful skills in fabricating this type of appropriate technology and many say they will likely enter their working units produced at this workshop into the Solar Cooker/Dryer competition to be held at the annual Energy Expo at Denmark's Centre for Sustainable Living at the end of February. Also, a larger scale working model of a solar dryer was produced and will be exhibited with some educational signage for Tip Shop visitors' interest and inspiration People are eager to learn these practical skills for their own empowerment -there was so much interest and demand shown for this course, we exceeded capacity and had to turn people away Looking to the Future In addition Green Skills has organised an afternoon workshop for representatives (both teachers and parents) from local schools in Denmark (Spirit of Play, Ag College, Denmark High School, Golden Hill Waldorf School, Denmark Primary School) on Wednesday 23rd June with Jennifer Weston, Community Education Coordinator, Waste Wise Schools Program WA Department of Environment and Conservation. This workshop will provide a platform for developing further partner projects between the Tip Shop and local educational institutions. 2 Funk And Junk Youth Art Waste Avoidance and Recyc ling Awareness Project – Denmark A youth focused recycled materials (‘Funk and Junk’) art program based from Denmark Tip Shop and Centre for Sustainable Living – employing two artists to run a series of workshops linking young people to making interesting sculptures and other works from materials sourced the Denmark Tip Shop and Recycling Centre. This project will have a youth community and education component and will involve building on partnerships between the Green Skills and youth related organisations such as the Tha House, and Denmark Arts in Denmark. The principal artist will be James Gentle who has much experience with using recycled materials and linking this to music, youth and community arts and education. He is the musical director of the junk percussion band Hedge Bandits Junk Collective (the Denmark section of Junkadelic). He has been involved in junk instrument, junk music, junk sculptures and junk puppets for the last 5 years. (website www.myspace.com/hedgebandits). He will be supported by community art workers drawn from Denmark Arts. The end result of this project will be a recycled art exhibition, linked to a prominent cultural event in Denmark like the Denmark Arts Market Days. It is planned that resulting art exhibition which will carry major waste minimization and awareness messages.

Location; This project will be based at the Centre for Sustainable Living (CSL) workshop shed, as well linking to such locations as the Denmark Tip Shop and Tha House. The resulting exhibition will be based in Denmark, with one option being part of the Denmark Arts Market Days, held in Berridge Park, Denmark River foreshore, Denmark. Outcomes: A range of workshops were organised through this project that resulted in sculptures and stencil art at the Denmark Tip Shop and Recycling Education Centre. Two sets of workshops (see photos) were held in December 2009 and in March 2010 which involved James Gentle and other artists working with both youth and adults to create permanent stencil art with a recycling and resource re use theme on the outside walls of the Denmark Tip Shop Educational facility. These activities involved partnerships between Green Skills, Denmark Arts, ThaHouse and the local community. About 8 young people participated in these Stencil Art workshops. James Gentle did run a workshop at ThaHouse which created hanging sculpture mobiles which were exhibited near the Centre for Sustainable Living in November 2009 as part of the Gondwana Youth Arts Expo. In addition, James Gentle coordinated sculpture making activities between December 2009 and March 2010 with the Denmark High School, working with particular Year 9/10 students. These activities, held at the Denmark Tip Shop, resulted in an innovative sculpture using reuse materials from a design provided by working with the students. Between November 2009 and May 2010 a number of sculpture and musical instrument making activities have been run at the Denmark Tip Shop and Centre for Sustainable Living which have created a number of large musical instruments. This project has been in partnership with Hedge Bandits music group. The toilet and other facilities at the Denmark Tip Shop have been decorated with art pieces, including paintings and images diverted from the waste stream. Overall, the Denmark Tip Shop and its Recycling Education program has benefited greatly from this successful art project. 3. Education Seminar for Albany – Opportunities for Recycling, Waste Avoidance, Recovery and Community Empowerment A seminar in Albany focusing on educating public on options or opportunities for dealing with particular waste streams including. This seminar will bring together the various stakeholders

such as Local Government, Cleanaway, other small businesses, Albany Community Environment Centre, Green Skills and interested members of the general public. The aim is to bring down keynote two experts, Steve Drake Brockman and Peter Kenyon, from Perth to educate, enthuse and inform in the field of recycling, community involvement in waste management, opportunities for Local Government and industry in this field. The seminar will help educate both key stakeholders and interested members of the public about opportunities for further waste diversion, establishment of small business or community enterprises, and innovative educational opportunities. The seminar will be aim to be half day in length, at a suitable conference venue in central Albany, and timed to maximize public, agency and governmental involvement. Location: The seminar will be held at an appropriate conference venue in Albany such as the lower Albany Town Hall, the St Johns Ambulance Centre hall, or Dog Rock Motel conference facility. Outcomes The seminar was organised as part of the goal of having all WA local government councils to set up thriving recycling centres and Tip Shop enterprises for their towns and communities within the next three years. To help bring this ambitious plan to fruition, the South coast based organisation Green Skills ran the forum which aims to bring together a broad cross-section of community, industry and government to learn, share and plan ways to promote greatly reduced waste to landfill. Titled Transforming Trash, this forum promoted re-use and recycling and the establishment of Recycling Centres and Tip Shops across Western Australia. It was held in Denmark at the Centre for Sustainable Living (CSL) on Wednesday 10th March 2010 and attended by about 40 people. The forum provided a focus on Tip Shops/Recycling Centres as valuable community enterprises employing people and providing much needed services to their communities. Key note speakers included speakers/motivators for the seminar includes Jan Grimoldby, Deputy Chair of the W.A. Waste Authority, and well known community enterprise consultant, Peter Kenyon. This forum was held at the Denmark Centre for Sustainable Living from 10a.m till 4p.m on Wednesday 10th March. It was followed by a special music concert to be held at the Denmark Tip Shop from 5p.m which was attended by over 60 people. A variety of South Coast musicians will perform there, including using instruments made from recycled materials. The forum included sessions where local governments, industry and community representatives provided feedback on challenges and opportunities to improve solid waste re-use and recycling initiatives in regional W.A in the next few years. This workshop formed part of the Green Skills waste minimization and education projects, supported by Lotterywest, WA Waste Authority of the WA State Government, Great Southern Development Commission and the Royalties for Regions fund.

In addition, Green Skills utilized the lead up time to the Seminar to work with stakeholders and project partners to develop a forward planning education strategy for the Denmark Tip Shop and Recycling Centre. This is attached. 4 Education Resources for Waste Avoidance Community Education based from Denmark Tip Shop Educational building. Development of Displays and recycling education resources for the Education Resource Room, Denmark Tip Shop. Green Skills has recently expanded facilities and infrastructure at the Denmark Tip Shop and Recycling Centre. It is currently employing a sustainability officer to promote community education on waste minimization and recycling. This will provide additional resources for the Tip Shop to acquire relevant recycling information and resources, workshop equipment, and tools to help with the Tip Shop’s efforts to educate, reduce, re-use, recycle. Location; Denmark Tip Shop 5. Waste Avoidance Resource Recovery and Transition Town Film & Discussion Night Series. As a contribution to the ‘Transition Town’ movement for South Coast WA, this project is to run a series of five ‘film nights’ where interesting and relevant DVD documentaries sourced from Perth and elsewhere are shown and then discussed. Location: This would take place at the Denmark Centre for Sustainable Living on a week day evening. Outcome A monthly program of environmental documentaries commenced running in January 2010 (running each month through May 2010) at the Denmark Centre for Sustainable Living. Green Skills, Climate Action Denmark, Denmark Transition Town and Denmark Environment Centre combined forces to present these films: The numbers ranged from 22 to 54 (for I) These were followed by lively discussions and debate.

Notes on the Five Documentaries Screened Environmental Documentaries screened included: 1) The Age of Stupid – 7pm Mon 25th Jan. The award winning film “The Age of Stupid” is a docu-drama-animation is the first of a series of sustainability films which are now showing monthly at the CSL. Presented by Climate Action Denmark, Green Skills, Denmark Environment Centre and Transition Denmark, the film will be shown between 7pm and 9pm on Monday the 25th of January. Entry by donation. Part of this film had a strong focus on pollution control and waste diversion and recycling. 2) GARBAGE WARRIOR: An exciting, new movie about bu ilding sustainable houses from re-cycled materials . 7pm (to 9pm) Monday 22nd February 2010 Strong focus on addressing waste. 3) “A Convenient Truth: Urban Solutions from Curiti ba, Brazil” “It is an informative, inspirational documentary aimed at sharing ideas to provoke environment friendly and cost effective changes in cities worldwide. The documentary focuses on innovations in transportation, recycling, social benefits including affordable housing, parks and the processes that transformed Curitiba in Brazil into one of the most livable cities in the world.. Cities should not be a solution not a problem for human beings. The city of Curitiba has demonstrated for the past 40 years how to transform problems into cost-effective solutions that can be applied in most cities in the world.” Part of this film had a strong focus on waste diversion and recycling. 4) The Power of Community: Cuba and Its response to oil shortages’ When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1990, Cuba's economy went into a tailspin. With imports of oil cut by more than half – and food by 80 percent – people were desperate. This film tells of the hardships and struggles as well as the community and creativity of the Cuban people. They share how they transitioned from highly mechanized agriculture to using organic farming and urban gardens. It is an unusual look into the Cuban culture during this economic crisis. The film opens with a short history of Peak Oil, a term for the time when world oil production will reach its all-time peak and begin to decline forever. Cuba, the only country that has faced such a crisis, is an example of options and hope. Part of this film had a focus on waste diversion and recycling, particularly in relation to green waste composting etc.

5) Energy Islands 7pm Monday 24th May 2010 @ CSL A documentary that looks at six European islands are making the transition to renewable energy: including Sicily, Canary Islands, Crete, Gotland and Samso to see renewable energy systems in operation. See innovative examples of energy provided by hydro, off-shore wind, solar, volcanoes, bio-mass, hydrogen fuel-cells and more. While this film focused on energy issues, there was overlap in some sections with waste diversion and recycling. The monthly documentary series will continue each month at the CSL Was your project successful in the way you expected ? (if not, why not?) The project was successful in the way planned. Although modifications were made (for example having the major seminar based at Denmark rather than Albany), the overall goals for each component of the project were largely achieved, and indeed Green Skills believes it was able to achieve more than originally envisaged. What lessons were learned through the Project? Plea se describe strengths and weaknesses of the project. What, if anything, would you do differently if the project was done again? The project provided opportunities to learn how to begin developing and delivering a program of waste minimisation education on the south coast. A weakness of the project is having suitable experts to draw on close by to assist with developing the strategic direction for the Denmark Tip Shop and Recycling Centre. Most expertise is in the South West or in Perth, not so readily accessible on a regular basis to Denmark. Were you able to complete your project in the appro ved timeframe? The overall project was completed by the end of May, which was slightly longer than originally envisaged. However most elements of the program ran to schedule. If there were variations, what were the cause(s)? The major change was to shift the seminar from Albany to Denmark – this was done with reference to the Waste Management Branch –and the outcome was successful Another small variation is that the art workshops and outcomes were modified a little to fit with the opportunity of placing an educational mural on the Denmark Tip Shop Educational facility.

How did you acknowledge the Community Grants Scheme funding you received Was any promotional material produced for your project? (if so, please attach copies of flyers, posters etc) Yes promotional material and posters were produced for different components of the project and examples of these are included with this acquittal report. The State Government of WA, Waste Authority and the Towards Zero Waste logos were included. In additional the Waste Authority and the grants program were acknowledged in news releases etc. This was not always reported as in the attached example of the Local Government Waste e newsletter that went out that included mention of our Green Skills events. The support of the Waste Authority of WA and the Dept of Environment and Conservation’s Waste Management Branch was acknowledged at public events associated with the various stages of the project. Were there any promotional opportunities for your p roject? (if so please attach copies of newspaper articles, photos etc) The workshops and seminar provided opportunities for promotional opportunities, and examples of press coverage are included in this acquittal report. The project was promoted not just to the councils and communities of the south coast, but also to council representatives etc from elsewhere in WA (through the successful seminar run). Do you feel your project has made a positive differ ence in your community? (If so, how? if not, why not?) Yes, very positive and ongoing contribution. It has allowed Green Skills to expand its waste diversionary and Tip Shop activities and greatly increase its educational activities associated with waste minimisation and sustainability education in general. The project also had a much bigger reach that just the south coast. Did any opportunities or ideas arise during the pro ject? Several new opportunities have arisen. It may well be that Green Skills can have input into the new Tip Shop facility planned by eh Shire of Plantagenet at Mt Barker. We have been able to help the Albany Community Environment Centre with its Tip Shop planning and liaison project. The opportunity to help Peaceful Bay develop its waste and recycling facilities has presented itself. etc

Do you now have ideas for other future projects? Yes, we have quite a few ideas for future projects. These cover the need for new facilities for the Tip Shop (especially large open sided shed), expanded green waste research and development activities, more networking and resourcing of our school based recycling and waste minimisation education program, further art, music and literary projects linked to the Tip Shop educational office, etc Future targets: Green Skills would very much like to install a second similar sized shed because of the need for extra storage and presentation space. Green Skills has received funding from Lotterywest (announced in August) for the following exciting initiatives at the Tip Shop. - Installation of compost toilet - Installation of a large rain water tank to harvest water off the new Shed - Roof cover over the transportable building - Development of an educational and future development strategy for the Tip Shop - Sustainability and waste education activities. Green Skills would like to continue to expand and develop the various activities of the Tip Shop, including into the art and cultural realm. Green Skills would like to continue to make an important contribution, not only to diverting resources from land fill, but to broader community education activities regarding waste reduction, recycling and environmental sustainability. Examples of future plans include:

• Minimise aluminum can volume by compaction to reduce transport costs. • Better coordination of incoming goods to reduce random drop-offs. • More involvement with recyclable materials e.g.: cardboard, glass, scrap metal

(excluding steel). • Greater shed space to reduce spoiling of goods to weather. • Pricing quality items accordingly to raise revenue. • Increasing volume of items being reused and recycled the future by controlling the

quality of incoming stock
