School Improvement Planning Team

We began last January with one goal: To improve student behavior and create a structured, district-wide behavior management plan.

All teacher feedback that was brought back to SIPT, was discussed, and assisted the team in creating a plan that we felt best fit the district’s needs.

After many SIPT meetings, multiple BOE meetings, a consultation with the district’s lawyer, and a public hearing, the BOE voted to adopt the Community Expectations Guide.

The 4 Levels of the Community Expectations Guide

Level 1: Any misbehavior that disrupts the operation of the school and its educational process.

The classroom teacher, for most Level 1 infractions, will handle the initial discipline.

Inappropriate language Minor class disruptions Teasing/name calling Failure to bring required materials to class Use of inappropriate electronic devices, including cell phones,

Ipods, etc. Other behavior that disturbs the learning environment. Inappropriate dress Misuse of pass privileges Eating, drinking in an unauthorized area Inappropriate cafeteria behavior Inappropriate public displays of affection Possession of lighter or matches on school property or during

school-related activities

Level 1 Infractions:

Regarding Infraction “Failure to bring required materials to class”:

We suggest you explain to your classes what your “required materials” are on the first day.

7-12 Teachers:

Regarding Infraction “Use of inappropriate electronic devices, including cell phones, Ipods, etc.”:

Students must not be permitted to use these devices at any time during the school day, unless it serves as a direct educational resource.

All Staff:

You MAY give a verbal warning (up to 2)

1st Offense: “Conduct Referral” form sent home

Consequences:

2nd- 4th Offense: “Detention Notice” sent home (lunch or after-school) plus a parent phone call must be made by the teacher

5th Offense: Parent Meeting

Have another parent meeting,

Remove the student from class, or

Use the “Student Behavior Referral” form to refer the student to the office◦ An administrator will contact the parent and meet

with the student to develop a written plan of action to correct the behavior.

The administration will keep track of all forms that are submitted.

If a student is violating the Expectations Guide in excess, and/or in multiple classrooms, the student will be disciplined at a higher level by the administration.

Level 2: Any misbehavior whose frequency or seriousness tends to disrupt the learning climate of the school and/or the student’s own education.

Infractions:• Persistent violations at Level 1• Not in assigned area• Cutting teacher detention• Cutting office detention• Persistent disrespectful and

disruptive behavior• Insubordination / blatant refusal to

follow directions• Harassment and intimidation• Academic cheating• Leaving school without permission• Forgery• Gambling• Shoving/Horseplay

Level 2 Continued…

All infractions must be submitted to the office using the “Student Behavior Referral” form.

The administration will hand all level 2 consequences.

Infractions: Extortion Assault, fighting, physical abuse in school or on school

property Sexual, racial, religious harassment (Informal stage) Theft, trespassing Vandalism Dangerous behavior, such as throwing objects, shoving, and

reckless driving, leaving school with intention to fight, etc. Purposeful, aggressive, grossly obscene / vulgar language,

behavior or possession of this material Possession, sale, use, purchase, sharing drug paraphernalia Possession of tobacco / tobacco products on school grounds

Level 3: Any misbehavior that may pose a serious threat to the health and safety of others in school or has a lasting effect on the individual.

Infractions: Arson Bomb threat / false alarm Drug-alcohol possession Weapon / explosives (including fireworks) Serious vandalism In any way deliberately endangering the

welfare of others

Level 4: Any misbehavior whose consequences pose an immediate threat to the health and safety of others.

The SIPT Committee will continue to meet throughout the school year.

By mid-year, our goal is to have evaluated the guide to ensure it has become what it was intended to be.

Any issue that arises during the year related to the Expectations Guide should be brought to the attention of a SIPT teacher representative. Your representatives are:
