Community Choral ProjectOpen to men and women of all ages and abilities, this is a great opportunity to participate in your community, have some fun and learn something new!

Feeding into the City’s biggest event the Joondalup Festival, the Community Choral Project is an opportunity for those who share a love of music to come together for seven weeks of rehearsal leading to two public performances on the main stage at the Festival.

This year the choir will be singing some of the greatest hits of rock music icons Queen. With expert tuition from Musical Director Jangoo Chapkhana, the choir will perform with a four-piece band of professional musicians. For the first time in 2018, members will have the opportunity to audition for solo positions within the choir.

Who can be involved?The Community Choral Project is open to everyone and in particular those people who have always wanted to participate in a choir but never dared.

No experience is necessary and there are no auditions for chorus. Register online via the City’s website until Monday 29 January 2018.

Biography of Musical Director: Jangoo ChapkhanaWidely acclaimed as one of the most versatile musicians in Australia, Jangoo Chapkhana is a conducting graduate from the prestigious Peter the Great Academy of Music (St Petersburg).

He is the founder and Artistic Director of the chorale Lux et Veritas and the chamber orchestra Camerata 1685. He is also an organist of international standing and presented an all-Bach programme at Grace Church (New York City) in January 2017.

Jangoo Chapkhana is an accomplished jazz pianist and his third album Grand Bazaar was released to much acclaim in 2017. In 2018, he will direct the music for Sondheim’s Assassins at the Heath Ledger Theatre.

Sheet musicSheet music will cost $20.00, payable at the first rehearsal. The charge is to cover the cost of purchasing the music rights and original music sheets.

Auditions for soloistsThis year the City will be auditioning choir members for solo parts. To be considered for a solo spot you must be available to attend all rehearsals.

For the audition, you will be required to sing the complete male or female solo part as per the following arrangement:

A copy may be downloaded from virtualsheetmusic.com and the cost will be deducted from your fees for sheet music at the first rehersal.

A live or pre-recorded accompaniment is preferred with your video audition. Videos can either be:

• Uploaded to youtube.com with a link sent to lynsey.trench-murphy@joondalup.wa.gov.au

• A CD or USB with the audition may be delivered to the City of Joondalup Administration, Attn: Lynsey Trench-Murphy, 90 Boas Avenue, Joondalup. Please do not put your audition CD or USB in the mail.

All auditions will be by video submission only and auditions will close Wednesday 27 December 2017.

How many rehearsals do I need to attend?The City encourages you attend as many rehearsals as possible so you feel adequately prepared for the final performances. No more than two rehearsals may be missed if you want to perform in the concerts.

All participants will be required for a full dress and technical rehearsal on Thursday 22 March 2018 to address, lighting, sound and any other technical requirements. All participants are required to attend both performances.

Duty of careThe City of Joondalup will make every effort to ensure the safety of participants in the Community Choral Project.

The City of Joondalup has public liability insurance that indemnifies the City against any act or omission of negligence by the City of Joondalup’s elected members, employees or volunteers.

Any person/s under 18 years of age must provide consent from a parent/guardian to participate in the project.

Photographic consentFor evaluation and documentation purposes the City may photograph and/or video throughout the rehearsals and performances and therefore participants must advise the City should they have any objections to being photographed.
