racing the origins of the land now called Charlotte is likellowing an old game trail through ancient forest. Teacks, crushed turf and broken twigs are gone but an

mpression on the forest itself has been left. A shallow furor, atches of exposed mud and a narrow line cut through thendergrowth visible only when directly on the trail thennishing in the seeming chaos a pace to the left or right.

What is known is Charlotte was part of the huntingounds of the Seneca Nation. Te marsh and lowland woods

ear the great lake of Ontario provided game in abundancend sh populated the river and the fresh waters of whatbut a part of the vast inland sea of the Great Lakes.

Perhaps the rst European to see the area was interpretornd explorer tienne Brl who mapped the Genesse Riverlley during his years spent living among the native peoplesthe behest of renowned explorer and benefactor Samuel dehmplain. Brl achieved notoriety after betraying Champlain

nd France to the English. Te long time frontiersman met hiseath at the hands of his own adopted Huron people in 1643.

Charlottes future didnt rest in the hands of the Frenchnd as England slowly conquered New France a nascentnited States started to ll the space formally occupied by

urely European powers. In 1788, a mere year after thegning of the Constitution, the Mill Yard ract was created.

Tis parcel was purchased from the Senecas by New Englandusinessmen Oliver Phelps and Nathanial Gorham. Teke shore portion of the parcel would grow into Charlotte.

Te beginning of the village was with a single hut. Tisodest structure was built on the west bank of the river by

William Hincher and his son who were later joined by hisife and seven daughters. Te village proper was laid out1792 by Colonel Robert roup who created single acrets of the now defunct Mill Yard ract. Once divided thehole area was named Charlotteburgh after his daughter.

Tese settlements preceded the founding of Rochester.Te early 1800s saw the growth of Charlotte as a port

wn in the vibrant trade network spreading through the Great

Lakes. Frontier merchant George Clinton Latta ran a eet ofsleek squared sailed schooners from Charlotte. Tis trade wasseriously disrupted when war broke out in 1812. Te threatof English naval raids coming from Canada was so severeshipping had to be diverted miles inland to Carthage Landing(near the Veterans Memorial Bridge). Several encountersoccurred at or near Charlotte with Royal Navy forces actuallylanding in June 1813 to take supplies from the local people.Later eorts were met rst by the ships under CommodoreIssac Chauncey and later the canons of local militia units.

Te end of the war lead to a true owering of the laketrade and in 1820 no less than 316 ships visited the port. oaccommodate the increased shipping the rst light house forthe port was built in 1821. However, the lake trade couldntcompete with the Erie Canal and later railroad lines.

Te rebound and reinvention of Charlotte cameafter the Civil War. Te schooners and heavy limbedsailors and dock workers of the previous era gave wayvacationers and excursion steamers as port transitionedinto a summer resort. Leaving behind the summer heatto enjoy the cool lake air people ocked to the small portand the Genesee Yacht Club was established in 1874.

Over the years Charlotte has embraced its new roleoering a sandy beach front and bustling park along withseveral eateries near the lake. Rochesterians will nd localfavorites like Italian food from Mr Dominics On theLake. Cheeburger Cheeburgers famed one pound burgerbeckons along with sushi from California Rollin II. Savorysteaks, BBQ and seafood can be found at LDR Char Pit,Nolas BBQ and Pelicans Nest Restaurant respectively.

Finally, there is the Charlotte-Genesse Lighthouse. Datingfrom 1822 the 40 foot octagonal tower now stands as thelast original lighthouse on Lake Ontario. Te site nowhouses a museum and oers a commanding view of thePort of Rochester. Te lighthouse serves as a direct link toCharlottes past while oering an enviable view of its present.

Hilton is like many villages in Western New York. A quietlace nestled in the farm lands near the Great Lake Ontario.isitors come for the Apple Fest in October or to visit familynd friends. What they dont see is a whole community ofeople living their lives and raising families.

Peter Miles decided that supporting Hilton in the capacitys a pharmacist was the best way to spend his life. Mr. Miles

worked for Wegmans for thirteen years but knew it wasntis rst, best purpose. For that he took inspiration from his

ather.James Miles founded Rosencrance Pharmacy Incorporated

n 1937. With such a long track record it is no surprise PeterMiles had such determination to start his own business. I

ways felt independent pharmacy was where I would end up.Mr. Miles achieved that goal when he opened the Hilton

amily Pharmacy in 2007 at 32 Main Street in the heart ofHilton. As an extension of Rosencrance Pharmacy Inc he

as built a steady customer base and continues to expand theervices and products on oer.

Like many businesses in smaller communities the Hiltonamily Pharmacy oers more than just a convenient place toll prescriptions. While providing the services of a full serviceharmacy Mr. Miles company also oers a variety of otherroducts.

Oering a host of baked goods and drinksmade with Finger Lakes Coee Roaster beans.

Even with everything else on oer Mr. Miles takes thegreatest pride in the service his customers enjoy daily. Mr.Miles put it best when he said, We dont have answeringmachines. We like to talk to people.

all started when Rocco Viele took a business trip, I was

San Diego at a pool and spa show in 1982 and I saw a

untan bed and thought this could be kind of cool. Its a

rand new industry. I put one in my show room to sell.

hat showroom was part of a remodeling business that

ready provided hot tubs and spas. It was a combination

howroom and tanning business. In 1984 the first Golden

an was established on East Ridge Road and would go on

become one of the oldest tanning salons in the United

    ates.

ver the years the chain grew to six locations with the most

cent opening on Lyle Ave in Gates. Conveniently located

cross from Wegmans Rocco is excited about the new

cation with is combination of convenience and shopping

pportunities that is sure to please regular customers while

    troducing many more to tanning.

he biggest change has been the transition from the familiarolden Tans to Suntan City. It was not a decision Mr. Viele

ade lightly, That was the most difficult decision I ever

ad to make. Locally its very hard decision to understand

ecause I owned the market locally but what the market

oesnt understand is the big players are starting to come

to our market. So I chose to get on the bandwagon with

e best player. Suntan City is, I believe, the fastest growing

national chain of suntan salons in the country and they are

definitely the smartest. I was following them for five years.

Im a franchisee of Suntan City. Theyre in six different

    states.

Suntan City still offers the same tanning beds and sunless

tanning products but now with greater customer support

due to being part of a bigger company. Of particular note

are the suntan and sunless tanning products produced by

Australian Gold and Swedish Beauty produced by New

Sunshine. A host of exotic ingredients produce a product

    both succulent and smooth.

Despite the changes over the years Mr. Viele still feels a

strong connection to the Rochester community. He prefers

to express this through the support of charities going so far

as to say, We donate to every cause. When people call me

up and say, Would you be willing to donate to our cause?

we have one answer. Always yes. We never say no to anycause and thats important. Our customers support us and

we support their causes. Thats what life is all about.

In closing Mr. Viele said, If you chose to get a little bit of

sunshine. Then Suntan City would be a good choice to tan

sensibly and moderately. We ask that you consider us your

    favorite place to tan.

Sun Tan CityTe most important factor of Alpco Recycling is caring

about the environment, the Earth, and other communitymembers that it serves equitably. It does the things that peopledo not want to do or the dicult tasks of every day living likerecycling and waste management. Finding the best solutions is

Alpcos most eective business. Tis acts on the conservationof energy in the most sustainable ways. Alpco prides itselfon acting responsibly for the environment and encouragesits customers to think of how to be feasible in their actionsbecause disposing of their garbage in other ways may use moreenergy and not be necessary for sustainable purposes.

Alpco Recycling was started by Al Plumb and hiswife Janelle Plumb in 1962 who were in the sand and gravelbusiness and then in 1965 began doing business with sanitaryland lls. At the same time they were still in the sand andgravel business. Tey turned dumps into sanitary lls and in1975 started dealing with larger land lls and started recycling

materials out of the land lls and processing cardboard andscrap metals. In 1979 Alpco sold their land ll to build arecycling plant. In 1989 Plumb took over Alpco and madeinto Alpco Recycling Incorporated in September 1989complete recycling which included: ferrous metals, plastics, papers, non ferrous metals, construction, trucking, anddemolition.

Recycling has grown into the dominant part of Alpconow does and currently has many more employees.ransportation is operated by Alpcos truck eet of sanitarcontractors that do waste management work for bothresidential and commercial concerns.Tere are now 100employees compared to the three employees that it startedwith. Tey have more processed equipment and are consida dealer packer in most cases because they do not make aproduct. Plumb states that Alpco, decify and package stuup for transportation to mills and people that are makinga product. We feel our role is to advocate, reuse, recycle, repackage, and give that process to others.

Alpco strives to expand and grow in doing it what doebest in recycling and proper waste removal. Tey give answto peoples questions and concerns. Recycling is only oneportion of the conservation of energy for mankind and a lof times people look at recycling as the ultimate goal.Te

is the conservation of energy and recycling is a part of thaprocess. Be responsible with your waste management andmake sure that you recycle as eciently as you can and Alwill do the rest.

We nd the best solutions for you!

Want to nd a fantastic and unique winery?heck out A gust of Sun Winery and Vineyard at515 Baer Rd., Ransomville, N.Y. 14131. These guysre awesome. They seem to have it all.

This winery has been open since Aug., 2011almost 16 months). Shane and Erik Gustafson metach other at Purdue University in Indiana and foundhat they both had a high appreciation for wine. Theyoth took wine appreciation courses and eventu-ly became certied through U.C. Davis. They thenarted producing wine in an underground facilityom their home. In 2008, the couple relocated to

owa, but did not like the particular types of grapeshat this environment produced. So given that Erickas a New York native from the Rochester area,

hey decided to once again relocate, but this time toWestern N.Y., specically Niagara County. They were

ost impressed with The Niagara Wine Trail whichromoted an area with exceptional potential yet not

fully developed as the Finger Lakes region. Theiagara County area was under development and theustafsons felt this was an up and coming area. Theylt that they had found the perfect location for them.

And so their dream started to turn into a reality. There is now an upstairs lounge complete with a

service bar with seating, two large living room styleseating areas, two barrel tables with bar stools, manybooks, periodicals, board games, a computer, projec-tor, large screen, Blue Ray player, stereo, and more! This lounge is open to the public during most businesshours, but is large enough to be leased for many differ-ent kinds of private functions.

A Gust of Sun is a relatively new winery in NiagaraCounty, just 30 miles from Buffalo and 20 miles from

Niagara Falls. This winery and vineyard is already

producing a ne line of wines. Check out the websitehttp://www.agustofsun.com or call for further detailson location, announcements, specials, wine andchocolate pairings in the famous and much praisedTastings Plus.

The Gustafsons have also become part philanthro-pists with some of the proceeds from their two top sell-ing diamond wines going to help support Diamonds inthe Ruff, a local animal rescue charity. They seem todo it all.
