Director’s message

“Stop Inner Contradictions and Conflict”

Be clear about your thoughts and goals. Times are changing and

requirements are many. Irrespective of insinuating role of rising competitive work

life and transformed social life, the secret to a fulfilled achievement can be derived

when state is ‘mindful’ and which leads to conscious deliberations. With rising

expectations and surmounting challenges attaining clarity, purpose and outcome of

every decision has to be realised. Since ‘management’ is a purposive outcome and

outward looking proactive and strategic process, it is important to that as

sustainable organizations with a futuristic looking perspective, remaining

surpassive along with being mindful helps in maintaining psychological wellbeing

for being healthy and contented.

TECH AND TOUCH: Partnership not a Paradox

- Ananya Agrawal and Varsha Kumari

We are at an interesting cross road but one that is certainly not new to the history of humans. It isabout the large-scale interface between technology and humans. We often hear the refrain 'Willtechnology and the digital revolution make humans obsolete?' The question becomes moreironic when it is asked in the context of HR functions, which is all about people.

This paradox can be examined to arrive at a framework in order to determine what hassupremacy between "Tech and Touch" and for how long. Organizations use technology to sell orproduce profits from customers or they use it to lower cost or drive better efficiency. Similarly, technology is used to alter the customer’s journeys into digital journeys. It uses data andanalytics to make focused and better decisions related to operational or employee’s efficiency.

However, if one looks closely, "Tech versus Touch" is not a binary choice or outcome but acontinuum. For example, the online born furniture and lifestyle e-commerce companies in India :Pepper Fry & Urban Ladder are preparing to setting-up physical experience centers whereinclients can walk in and lookat the different pieces of home décor items and furniture. Also inJapan, the consumer behavior is to first check it out physically then go online and buy. The needfor a ‘human touch’ is fundamental to the success of most of the organizations. The questionwhich arises is: How do organizations decide where to place a slider on this continuum when itcomes to their firm's needs, their customers, and their industry maturity curve? To solve thisdilemma, the perspectives of the customers, stakeholders, or the employees are crucial. Thedecision to have a pure digital e-commerce channel or hybrid channel that gives customers theability to touch, feel, and interact with product depends on a customer need or buying behavior.

This concept can be extended to the functions of HR, HR in such firms has to make sure that thereality is amalgamated into the different facets of Human Resources anchored in the way thatthese firms are approaching consumer experience.

Let's consider the example of using analytics in HR to take better decisions if we presume thatbased on analytics and AI we can automate some decisions, such as looking at the performancesof employees or attendance regularization. For example, for high-performers who are highlyproductive/high performersit should auto approve leaves. But it should be balancedwith thereality of what the job may require and what the employees actually do. So again the "tech andtouch continuum" comes into play, i.e. you could have an AI, analytics-based logic in certainsituations, but in other situations one would need a human interface to be able to take a call.

There is an interdependency between tech and touch, and the potency of one vs. the other isdefined by what the end-user perceives as a superior experience. It's equally important tounderstand that the"Tech and Touch" continuum will evolve or change as the experienceexpectations of customer, stakeholders, or employee realities preferences change with time orexternal.

An Indispensable Skill That Best Mangers Equip

- Aditya Khanna

The most rudimentary yet indispensable skill for any manager is the art of handling people or incontext to corporate jargons “people skills”. This term encompasses many attributes, mostimportant to which is ability to understand and relate to people. According to most of thepioneers in this field, a person’s 15% of success is determined from knowledge and technicalskills whereas 85% of it is ensured by ones prowess in connecting with people, buildingtrustworthy relations with supreme degree of honesty and with a slight taste of humour in it.

When it comes to understanding and forming opinions about people one meets, they can bebroadly classified as either Judgers or Perceivers. For those who are new to this field ofbehavioural sciences, Judging and Perceiving, in simple terms, are the means by which youinteract with the world outside yourself, either in an organized or adaptable manner.

Judging and perceiving personality traits are inverse inclinations. Judgers esteem request andassociation. They may be considered as inflexible and obstinate. Inversely, perceivers areversatile and are masterminds who like to keep their alternatives open. They may be consideredas unreliable souls.

We all are well aware of the importance of taking time and understanding the point of view ofother person or any situation at hand rather than just coming up with conclusions by first glance.Research conducted by many pioneers and secondary research as of ours, prove to be useful toolsin understanding the human mind set and behaviour when it comes to forming opinions of others.

Epilogue of most of such researches is the underlying hypocrisy in the behaviour and nature ofhuman beings. Everyone wants others to think of them as a person who believes in perceivingrather than judging. Though, they themselves judge others.

The shift in the behaviour from judging to perceiving is noticed with age and experience. This isthe primary reason why seats of the top most authorities of any organisation are filled withpeople with experience.

Certain characteristics like attitude, body language, appearance, communication skills, andhumour in nature in an individual affect and help in formation of good opinion about them byothers. Preformed beliefs of a person act as a barrier and bias their decisions and perceptionsabout others.

Relationships directly affect the state of mind and most of them break or build based on peoplebecoming too judgemental about each other. Thus, be it personal or professional life, portrayingand having an open mind that perceives and analyses every person/situation is eminent whichhelps pave a better future of a person.

Data Religion

- Anna Bahadur

Big data is the new Universal Monarch of the world. It is the apotheosis of the InformationRevolution, which has changed the world in fundamental ways and it is bound to impact everyaspect of human being’s social and private life.

No part in the history have the humans rely on data to the extent that we have. From marketdecision making and policy framing to as personal as building human relationships, we haverelied on data. According to Digital Universe report, IDC estimates that the amount ofinformation stored in the world IT system is doubling every 2 years. By 2020, the total amountwill be enough to fill a stack of tablet that reaches from the earth to the moon 6.6 times.

People view big data as something that could unravel the truth. However, the fact lies that bigdata by its very nature is limited and deficient. Companies capture trillions of bytes of dataabout their customer in order to enhance their sale. Policy framers are using big data to makerational policy decision. However, human behavior is itself unpredictable. Providing a universalbasic income could empower some by enabling them to spend money for productive activities. At the same time, it could lead to wasteful expenditure by other.

The lurking danger lies in the fact that big data can be misused. Government and regimes aroundthe world have been and can be toppled by spreading incorrect, misrepresented data. Today, society is more vulnerable to data infringement than border infringement. As such data privacyand protection have become an important part of government policies across the globe.

Big data can be used to create a’ dystopic world of Big brother’. Evidence of this is emergingfrom China, where the recently upgraded surveillance system could track every single one of its1.4 billion citizens by using facial recognition to name and shame jaywalks. The government hasforced Uighurs, an ethnic minority in western China, to download an app that can scan theirphotos, videos, thus evading their privacy.

At the end of the day, the meaning of the data depends on who is collecting it. The data iscollected to fulfill the particular objective of the collector of the data. As such neutrality of datais difficult to establish. Too much reliability on big data is dangerous as it could create a cultureof uniformity, supporting the viewpoint of those who are the creators of that data.

The world of Big data has undoubtedly provided accuracy and speed to the business decisionmaking. However, one should look at big data with a pinch of salt, considering the lurkingdanger behind it. As we have moved from a homo centric to data centric world, we should becautious of the lurking danger of “humanity being turn out to be just a ripple within the cosmicdata flow”.
