In Preparation for the Lord’s Supper

The Bible tells us (1 Corinthians 11:23-29) that it is vitally important that we understand and believe that the Lord’s Supper is a participation in the very Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. To receive the blessings of this Sacrament to our benefit it is necessary that we examine our hearts and our lives. Please read and prayerfully consider the following:

I believe that I am sinful by nature and in need of forgiveness. I confess that I have sinned in my thoughts, words, and deeds. I believe I am forgiven only through faith in Jesus Christ. I confess that in, with, and under the bread and wine I receive the very

Body and Blood of Jesus. I promise by the power of the Holy Spirit to amend my sinful life and

strive to live a God-pleasing life. As members of Jesus’ family, we have a responsibility to teach and encourage one another so that we receive the blessing intended for us in this Sacrament. Out of sincere love, we respectfully ask that those who have not been instructed and confirmed in the Lutheran Church please speak with a pastor before attending the Lord’s Supper. St. Luke’s offers “Explorations” an adult information class for those high school age and above desiring to be confirmed. Children are confirmed at the end of their eighth grade year after completing instruction. We are happy to meet with you and discuss any special circumstances or needs you may have.

Communion Procedure Note: Anyone who cannot come to the communion rail may receive the Lord’s Supper in the pew. Simply let a pastor or usher know your request and sit in one of the front rows. Those who are not communing are invited to come forward for a blessing (please cross your arms across your chest to indicate your desire for a blessing).

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

July 29, 2018 Connecting to Community - Good News for All

As We Gather: Our lesson today marks the beginning of a new section in the book of Acts. Up to now everything has happened in Jerusalem. When persecution broke out against the followers of Jesus in Jerusalem people fled from that city, except the Apostles. Immediately north of Jerusalem, Samaria would have been a safe haven since the Samaritans were despised and avoided by the religious leaders of Israel for centuries. What happens next is a testimony to the healing power of the good news about Jesus! By simply telling people about Jesus and caring for people who were suffering the Samaritans believed and were baptized! Look carefully. Pay attention. There was no grand master plan, no marketing scheme, no special training. Ordinary people like you and me, scattered by circumstances of life, began telling people about Jesus and caring for those in need.

Opening Hymn: “Facing A Task Unfinished”

1. Facing a task unfinished That drives us to our knees A need that, undiminished Rebukes our slothful ease We, who rejoice to know Thee Renew before Thy throne The solemn pledge we owe Thee To go and make Thee known

2. Where other lords beside Thee

Hold their unhindered sway Where forces that defied Thee Defy Thee still today With none to heed their crying For life, and love, and light Unnumbered souls are dying And pass into the night

Chorus:

We go to all the world With kingdom hope unfurled No other name has power to save But Jesus Christ The Lord

3. We bear the torch that flaming

Fell from the hands of those Who gave their lives proclaiming That Jesus died and rose Ours is the same commission The same glad message ours Fired by the same ambition To Thee we yield our powers

Chorus: We go to all the world With kingdom hope unfurled No other name has power to save But Jesus Christ The Lord

4. O Father who sustained them

O Spirit who inspired Saviour, whose love constrained them To toil with zeal untired From cowardice defend us From lethargy awake! Forth on Thine errands send us To labour for Thy sake

Chorus: (2 x’s)

We go to all the world With kingdom hope unfurled No other name has power to save But Jesus Christ The Lord

God Grants Us The Gift Of Forgiveness

Invocation: P: In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. (Matthew 28:19b; 18:20)

Confession:

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our

sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination.

P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.

We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.

God Speaks To Us From His Word

First Reading : Acts 8:1-18 (ESV)

P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

1And Saul approved of his execution. And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. 3 But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. 4 Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. 5 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. 6 And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was much joy in that city. 9 But there was a man named Simon, who had previously practiced magic in the city and amazed the people of Samaria, saying that he himself was somebody

great. 10 They all paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, “This man is the power of God that is called Great.” 11 And they paid attention to him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic. 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women. 13 Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip. And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed. 14 Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money.

Holy Gospel: Mark 6:45-56 (ESV)

P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord!

P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ!

45 Immediately he made his disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, to Bethsaida, while he dismissed the crowd. 46 And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray. 47 And when evening came, the boat was out on the sea, and he was alone on the land. 48 And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. He meant to pass by them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the sea they thought it was a ghost, and cried out, 50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them and said, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 51 And he got

into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded, 52 for they did not understand about the loaves, but their hearts were hardened. 53 When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. 54 And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him 55 and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. 56 And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.

1. Oh to see the dawn of the darkest day Christ on the road to Calvary Tried by sinful men torn and beat-en then Nailed to a cross of wood

Chorus 1:

This the pow'r of the cross Christ became sin for us Took the blame bore the wrath We stand forgiven at the cross

2. Oh to see the pain written on Your

face Bearing the awesome weight of sin Ev'ry bitter thought ev'ry evil deed Crowning Your bloodstained brow

Chorus 1 3. Now the daylight flees now the

ground beneath Quakes as its Maker bows His head Curtain torn in two dead are raised to life Finished the vict'ry cry

Chorus 1

4. Oh to see my name written in the wounds For through Your suff'ring I am free Death is crushed to death life is mine to live Won through Your selfless love

This the pow'r of the cross Son of God slain for us What a love what a cost We stand forgiven at the cross

Sermon Affirmation of Faith: Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
