The Masonic Temple in Freeport has long served the community as a center for civic pride, ingenuity and entrepreneurial enterprise, but surprisingly few folks really know the background of the facility. Masonic Temple Building Manager Dean White said that the first temple was built in 1904, but was eventually torn down. “They laid the cornerstone for the current building in 1927,” White said. “Its original cost was $750,000 and estimated replacement cost on the building right now is about twelve million. It was a pretty good investment.” He said the first performance in the auditorium was by John Phillip Sousa. “He was a Mason and did the first program in the new building,” White noted. He said that over the years, the Masonic Temple became a cultural center hosting numerous musical and theatrical events. “Our auditorium on the west side of the building seats a little over 1200 people and has a stage large enough to allow for backdrops and scenery,” White said. “We do a lot of musical performances and plays in the auditorium.” White said the current calendar for the Masonic Temple includes a concert in April by the Oak Ridge Boys. “The Oak Ridge Boys will be coming in April 29,” he said. “Seats are all reserved and are $45 on the main floor and $35 for everything up in the balcony. Tickets are available from www.freeportmasonictemple. org or by phone at 815.233.0513. He said the Masonic Temple works in partnership with Big Radio sponsoring the concerts. “They handle the marketing and we have the facility and we sell the tickets,” White explained. “We’ve had four concerts in the series so far and it’s going very well. Our goal is to bring quality entertainment to Freeport. It generates business for the area and it’s nice to be able to stay in town.” White said the Masonic Temple has an agreement with the nearby Hampton Inn in downtown Freeport for those event participants interested in staying the night. Call the Inn for room availability. White also noted that the Masonic Temple offers meeting rooms for day or night time gatherings. “We can provide projectors and have wireless Internet throughout the building and if folks need equipment we usually can help locate most of what they might need,” he said. In addition to the meeting rooms, the Masonic Temple features a 70x20 ballroom on the lower level. “That’s where we have most of our wedding receptions and dinners,” White said. “We’ve just finishing repainting downstairs and properly arraigned, we could probably seat 650 to 700 people there. There is a small stage on that level and there is a bar.” He said that on the main floor, there is another banquet room called the Crystal Room that allows us to accommodate another 165 people for a reception or a dinner. Now major surgery can feel pretty minor. Just ask Jackie. She was back on the ice not long after a hysterectomy. Her surgeon used the latest in laparoscopic technology. As a miniature extension of a surgeon’s hands, the da Vinci provides incredible vision, precision and control through tiny incisions. That means less pain and few side effects for patients like Jackie. Want to learn more? See the da Vinci in action and read patient stories online.
