CommunicationSystemsModelling and SimulationUsing MATLAB®

and Simulink®

K.C. RaveendranathanGovernment Engineering College,Barton Hill, Thiruvanathapuram, India

This is probably the first book that employs the tech-nique of simulation experiments as a means of rein-forcing the basic concepts of communication theory.Undergraduate students are generally exposed to amathematically rigorous treatment of communica-tions theory but seldom have the benefit of a practi-cal-orientated approach employing modelling andsimulation for a thorough assimilation of the subject. This book can supplement any standard textbook tocover this significant lacuna in the existing learningmethodology. It uses MATLAB® for the purpose. Theintroductory chapters provide an overview of com-puter simulation and MATLAB programming con-cepts. Thereafter, communications concepts are pre-sented in the traditional manner but followed up withappropriate simulations in MATLAB/Simulink®.Relevant MATLAB source code is given whenever it isused to illustrate a point. All the source code given inthe text has been tested on MATLAB kernel version7.10 (Release R2010a) and is provided in the accom-panying CD.

RFID DesignFundamentalsandApplicationsAlbert Lozano-NietoPenn State University, Lehman, USA

RFID is an increasingly pervasive tool that is now usedin a wide range of fields. It is employed to substanti-ate adherence to food preservation and safety stan-dards, combat the circulation of counterfeit pharma-ceuticals, and verify authenticity and history of criticalparts used in aircraft and other machinery—and theseare just a few of its uses.

Goes beyond deployment, focusing on exactly how RFID actually works

RFID Design Fundamentals and Applications sys-tematically explores the fundamental principlesinvolved in the design and characterization of RFIDtechnologies. The RFID market is exploding. With newand enhanced applications becoming increasinglyintegral to government and industrial chain supplyand logistics around the globe, professionals must beproficient in the evaluation and deployment of thesesystems. Although manufacturers provide completeand extensive documentation of each individual RFIDcomponent, it can be difficult to synthesize and applythis complex information—and users often must con-sult and integrate data from several producers for dif-ferent components.

This powerful reference helps to resolve this dilemmaby compiling a systematic overview of the differentparts that make up the whole RFID system, helpingthe reader develop a clear understanding of its mech-anisms and how the technology actually works. Mostbooks on RFID focus on commercial use and deploy-ment of the technology, but this volume takes a dif-ferent and extremely useful approach. A First Coursein DifferentialEquations,Modeling, andSimulationCarlos A. Smith andScott W. CampbellUniversity of South Florida,Tampa, USA

Emphasizing a practical approach for engineers and sci-entists, this text avoids overly theoretical explanationsand shows readers how differential equations arederived by applying basic physical principles and exper-imental observations to engineering systems. Thisresource also covers classical methods for obtaining theanalytical solution of differential equations and Laplacetransforms. In addition, the authors discuss how theseequations describe mathematical systems and how touse software to solve sets of equations in which analyt-ical solutions cannot be determined. Numerical valuesare provided in all examples and problems.

Solutions manual available upon qualifying course adoption.

Contracts forEngineersIntellectual Property,Standards, andEthicsRobert D. HunterRobert D. Hunter Associates,Austin, Texas, USA

Engineers encounter different types of contracts atnearly every turn in their careers. Contracts forEngineers: Intellectual Property, Standards, andEthics is a tool to enhance their ability to communi-cate contractual issues to lawyers—and then betterunderstand the legal advice they receive.

Building on its exploration of contracts, thisbook expands discussion to:

• Patents, copyrights, trademarks, trade secrets, and other intellectual property issues

• Development of standards and the bodies thatgovern them, as well as conformity assessmentand accreditation

• Ethics at both the micro and macro levels—aconcept under major scrutiny after several majordisasters, including the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, the collapse of Boston’s Big Dig, and a coal-min-ing accident that resulted in many deaths

With a brief introduction to common law contractsand their underlying principles, including basic exam-ples, the book presents a sample of the UniformCommercial Code (UCC) regarding the sale of goods. It evaluates elements of the different contracts thatengineers commonly encounter, such as employeeand associated consulting agreements and contractsinvolved in construction and government.

Approaching intellectual property from a contractperspective, this reference focuses on the many differ-ent types of patents and their role in commerce. Ittouches on the application of trademarks and recentdevelopments in the use of copyright as a form ofcontract and explains the process of obtainingpatents, including the rationale for investing in them.Ethical standards receive special attention, whichincludes a review of several prominent professionalcodes of ethics and conduct for both organizationsand individual engineers, particularly officers andhigher-level managers.

Selected Contents:

Common Law Contracts. Sales Contracts under theUniform Commercial Code. Contracts of SpecialInterest to Engineers. Intellectual Property: Emphasison Patents. Patent Processes. Copyright. TradeSecrets. Trademarks. ...
