OVERVIEW OF COMMON CORE & ESSENTIAL STANDARDS
Common Core and Essential Standards
• As a requirement of RttT, North Carolina must align its curricula with the Common Core State Standards
• North Carolina has also revised its curricula for many other subject areas
• Implementation of the Common Core State Standards and North Carolina Essential Standards is August 2012.
Why Common Core Standards?
• One way we can work to address the disparity between standards is to ensure that all children, regardless of socioeconomic status or life history, receive an education that values their potential.
Characteristics of the Common Core Standards
• Fewer and more rigorous. The goal was increased clarity.
• Aligned with college and career expectations – prepare all students for success upon graduation from high school.
• Internationally benchmarked, so that all students are prepared to compete in our global economy.
Characteristics of Common Core Standards
• Includes rigorous content and application of higher-order skills.
• Builds on strengths and lessons of current state standards.
• Is Research based.
RECENT GENERAL ASSEMBLY ACTIONS
Length of School Year
• NC General Assembly lengthens school year by 5 days to a total of 185 days
• State Board of Education offered a waiver for the additional five days if they were used for Common Core and Essential Standards professional development
• WSFCS applied for the calendar waiver• WSFCS school calendar must reflect days
dedicated to CCES professional development
Teacher Workdays
• NC law no longer requires a protected teacher workday at the end of each quarter
EMPLOYEE CALENDAR ADJUSTMENTS – RC DAYS
5 Days for CCES Professional Development
• October 31 and February 20 are already RC days and dedicated to CCES
• January 23, March 30 and June 8 will become RC days– NOTE: June 8 may become a student day, so the
last RC day may be the first teacher work day after the last student day
How will the RC days be used?
• October 31 – 6 hours• January 23 – 6 hours• February 20 – 6 hours• March 30 – will be used in case of snow• June 8 – will be used in case of snow
NOTE: If March 30 and June 8 are not needed as RC days, they will revert back to RS days for school use.
NOTE: Kindergarten
• Kindergarten math textbook training is October 31 – 3 hours– Zones 1, 3, 5, 7 – morning– Zones 2, 4, 6, 8 – afternoon
• Will attend 3 hours of Common Core and Essential Standards on October 31– Zones 1, 3, 5, 7 – afternoon– Zones 2, 4, 6, 8 – morning
Kindergarten Calendar
• October 31 – 3 hours• January 23 – 6 hours• February 20 – 6 hours• March 30 – 3 hours• June 8 – snow day
RC Days for Early College and Middle College
• December 21• January 13• May 24
Participation Expectations for Teachers
• All teachers are expected to participate in professional development on these RC days
• Annual leave requests will not be considered
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Professional Development Model – for Elementary Core Subjects
• Train the trainer model• Each teacher will attend professional
development and return to provide training to colleagues who attended other sessions
• Schools will be assigned content area allocations for each grade level and subject area

• 6 Kindergarten sections– 1 Reading– 2 Mathematics– 2 Science– 1 Social Studies
Professional Development for Core Areas
• Each teacher-trainer will receive 18 contact hours of professional development in ONE of the core areas
• October 31 – 6 hours• January 23 – 6 hours• February 20 – 6 hours• March 30 – will be used in case of snow• June 8 – will be used in case of snow
Return to School…Offer Training
• Each school level teacher-trainer will deliver training in the core subject area he/she attended on the RC days using 10 modules developed by Instructional Services
• The training modules are expected to take between 6 and 10 hours to deliver
Timeframe to Complete the CCES Professional Development
• Start – November 1, 2011• Completed – December 20, 2012• Schools complete modules 1 – 5 by June 14,
2012• Schools complete modules 6 – 10 by
December 20, 2012

• Core elementary teachers must complete 1.8 CEUs in the Common Core and Essential Standards by August 2012
School Professional Development Plans
• Each school will determine how the teacher-trainers will provide the 5 contact hours of training for each core subject
Possibilities for CCES School-based Training
• Some PLC/LTM time (not to exceed 50%)
• Some grade-level planning time
• After school sessions• Faculty meetings• Evening work sessions• Saturday work sessions
• RS days at the end of the school year
• Half-day planning sessions with subs to cover classes
• March 30 and June 8 if not used as RC days
NOTE: Training time after the normal 7.5 hour day may be “swapped” for hours on reserved school days.
Recommendation
• Dedicate March 30 and June 8 to CCES for a total of 12 hours of professional development
• Use 8 PLCs/LTMs to complete remaining 8 hours of professional development
Professional Development for Elementary Encore Teachers
• Each elementary encore teacher will receive 18 contact hours of professional development provided by the central office– Art– Music– World Language– Healthful Living
CEUs for Elementary Elective Teachers
• Elementary art, music, PE and world language teachers must complete 1.8 CEUs in the Common Core and Essential Standards by August 2012
Professional Development for AG Teachers
• Dedicated AG teachers who teach reading and mathematics for all of your grade levels– Attend ONE of the 18 contact hour sessions in
reading and mathematics offered by the central office
– Assist colleagues with conducting the school-based 10 hour sessions by December 20, 2012 for other teachers
– Attend reading and mathematics sessions for other grade levels offered at the school

Professional Development for AG Teachers
• AG teachers who are core teachers that teach reading, mathematics, science, and social studies have been treated as elementary core teachers for this project
• They should attend an 18 contact hour train-the-trainer session and the three other content sessions for their grade level offered at the school

• Elementary AG teachers must complete 1.8 CEUs in the Common Core and Essential Standards by August 2012
Professional Development for PRTs
• PRTs will attend the school-based CCES 10 contact hour sessions led by their colleagues
• Principals will determine which session is most appropriate for a PRT to attend
CEUs for PRTsPRTs will need to complete 0.5 CEUs in the Common Core and Essential Standards by August 2012
SECONDARY
Professional Development for Secondary Teachers
• Each teacher (core and encore) will receive 18 contact hours of professional development on Common Core and Essential Standards

• Hospital, homebound, hearing impaired, visual impaired, and orthopedic impaired EC teachers will attend 18 contact hours of Common Core and Essential Standards with their regular education colleagues in one subject across the K-12 curriculum
• Spaces will be allocated to schools

Professional Development for Adaptive EC Teachers
• EC teachers who teach adaptive PE, music, and art will receive 18 contact hours of Essential Standards professional development from the central office– They will attend the same professional
development as the regular education teachers in art, music, and PE

Professional Development for Speech Language Pathologists
• Each speech language pathologist will receive 1 contact hour of Common Core professional development in English Language Arts at 8 of their regularly scheduled monthly meetings
• Professional development will be provided by EC leadership team

• Speech language pathologists must complete 0.8 CEUs in the Common Core and Essential Standards by August 2012
Professional Development for Occupational Therapists and Physical
Therapists• Each occupational therapist and physical
therapist will receive 1 hour of Common Core awareness professional development at monthly meetings
• Professional development will be provided by EC leadership team

Professional Development for Media Coordinators & Technology Facilitators• Each technology facilitator will receive 18
contact hours of professional development in the Information and Technology Essential Standards.

• Technology Facilitators must complete 1.8 CEUs in the Common Core and Essential Standards by August 2012
MISCELLANEOUS

What if I don’t fit into the categories listed?
• Each teacher is expected attend professional development on the RC days
• Additional Topics Offered– Technology– Cultural Infusion– Intervention strategies
What about pre-Kindergarten?
• NC did not adopt the Common Core for pre-Kindergarten
• At this time, there are no CCES professional development requirements for pre-Kindergarten teachers
What about part-time teachers?
• Principals have the discretion to determine how part-time teachers will receive their CCES professional development.
• If a part-time teacher participates in the entirety of an RC day, swap time is viable resolution. Principals have the discretion to determine the swap time schedule for part-time teachers.
• Principals, APs and CCs will receive 90 minutes Common Core and Essential Standards professional development during each of their monthly meetings
• Principals, APs, and CCs are encouraged and invited to attend the RC day Common Core and Essential Standards sessions and the July Institute
What about CCES professional development for principals, APs and CCs?
What if principals do not attend CCES professional development on the RC days?
• Principals are encouraged to attend the CCES professional development on the RC days
• If they do not, they should complete the NC FALCON modules by February 20
