Japanese Auto Manufacturers Contribute to the Competitiveness of Europe’s Motor Industry

Japanese Automakers in the EUCollaboration for Innovative and Sustainable Mobility between the EU and Japan
Since the launch of an alliance producing commercial vehicles in Portugal in 1971 and of full-scale passenger car manufacturing operations in the United Kingdom in 1986, Japanese automakers have made extensive investments in the European Union, based on the principle of building automobiles where significant demand exists. Over the years they have become an integral part of the European landscape, conducting their business in Europe as constituent partners in the EU economy. JAMA member companies operate 14 production plants and 16 R&D centres in the EU.
In 2016:- Those plants’ annual production totalled 1.49 million units million vehicles, of which 291,647 were exported globally.- In JAMA member companies’ EU-based operations and in related distribution, sales and other
activities, 161,035 persons were employed across the EU.- JAMA member companies’ purchases of EU-made parts in value terms totalled €15.44 billion.
Having seen continuous, steady growth over the decades, the automotive industry is working towards the goal of comprehensively sustainable mobility through its contributions to social and economic welfare and, more specifically, its quest for cleaner and safer road transport. Technological advancement and the expectations of vehicle users now pose common challenges for the auto industry worldwide in its mission to supply vehicles which are not only safer and more environment-friendly but also attractive, comfortable and convenient to drive.
Addressing those challenges, automakers are accelerating their efforts to introduce to the market high-quality next-generation vehicles, including advanced alternative-energy models, equipped with automated-driving functions and “connected” systems. Progress here will be predicated on the auto industry’s cooperation with all the stakeholders concerned and the integration of a multiplicity of new concepts and technologies from a broad spectrum extending beyond geographic and industrial borders.
In that context as well, and because auto manufacturing depends on global supply chains, JAMA fully endorses the economic partnership/free trade agreement between the European Union and Japan. In addition to promoting the development of a fair and open business environment facilitating trade and investment between the two sides and greater auto-sector sustainability, the EU-Japan EPA is expected to boost bilateral economic growth and job creation, thereby contributing to the growth of the world economy.
Japanese automakers are determined to strengthen their collaboration with European stakeholders for innovative and sustainable mobility in the coming decade.
Established in 1967, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, Inc. (JAMA) is a non-profit industry association which comprises Japan’s fourteen manufacturers of passenger cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles. JAMA works to support the sound development of the automobile industry, domestically and globally, and to contribute to social and economic welfare. As directions in auto manufacturing increasingly influence the world we live in, JAMA takes its role and mission ever more seriously, on the road to sustainable mobility.

JAMA-CLEPA CooperationA long track record of close cooperation between JAMA and CLEPA (the European Association of Automotive Suppliers) continues to provide excellent opportunities to create strong business ties among Japanese automakers and European parts suppliers. On the occasion of the 10th JAMA-CLEPA Business Summit in Venice in October 2016, a joint press release* was issued affirming full support for the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA/FTA) and the treaty’s potential for prosperity and innovation on both sides.

Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd. (HUM) in Swindon, the global production hub for the tenth-generation Civic hatchback, started the production and export to the US market of the all new Civic hatchback in summer 2016. HUM received an investment of over £200 million to prepare for the start of production of this new model. Production of the hatchback for European markets started towards the end of 2016, followed by the sales launch in spring 2017. In addition to the Civic hatchback, Type R models will be manufactured at HUM and exported across Europe as well as to other markets around the world, including Japan and the US. Its arrival in North America will mark the first time that any Honda Type R has been officially sold there.
The all-new CX-5 builds on the strengths that made the outgoing generation Europe’s bestselling Mazda. The "Jinba-ittai" nature of the first model ever equipped with the full range of SKYACTIV technology has now evolved in line with Mazda's human-centric philosophy to share the driver-and-car-as-one sensation with all occupants. Hence the more advanced and intuitive “heads-up” cabin with added comfort and sophisticated ergonomics throughout, including a premium-class windshield projected head-up display. The ride is superior too, thanks to anti-fatigue seats, enhanced cabin insulation, suspension and powertrain improvements, and G-Vectoring Control (GVC), an innovative software-based system that controls body roll for better handling to heighten ride comfort and safety.
Mitsubishi Motors unveiled its Eclipse Cross all-new compact SUV coupé at the Geneva International Motor Show in March 2017. The Eclipse Cross is a fusion of sharp coupé looks and dynamic SUV mobility with signature Mitsubishi styling and performance. Other features are its design that motivates the driver to get "out and about" actively; connectivity that inspires new exciting adventures; and all-wheel control technology which provides the driver with an enjoyable driving experience.
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck Europe S.A. in Tramagal, Portugal started production of the Canter for export to Iran and Angola in 2016. That year 64 units of the Canter were dispatched to Iran, which was followed by the delivery of four units to Angola in March, 2017.
Nissan celebrated 10 years of Qashqai production by launching a refreshed version of Europe’s best-selling crossover. New Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies have also been added, continuing Nissan’s ongoing journey towards zero emissions and zero fatalities. The new Qashqai will be available with ProPILOT autonomous driving capability during fiscal 2017, controlling the steering, acceleration and braking in a single lane on highways. This will provide users with a more confident drive, enhanced control and greater freedom during heavy traffic congestion and high-speed cruising. In Qashqai's 10 years, more than 2.3 million units have been sold in Europe and the best-selling crossover has won more than 80 awards, including 19 recognising it as the ‘Car of the Year’.
The all-new Subaru XV made its world debut at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show in March. Combining a compact body with real SUV capabilities underpinned by Subaru’s original Symmetrical AWD system and a rugged and sporty design, the Subaru XV is a crossover SUV suited to a multitude of settings, from urban driving to the great outdoors. Representing the first full model change since the original Subaru XV was launched in 2012, the new model offers distinctive design and enhanced drivability on rough road surfaces, while adopting the all-new Subaru Global Plat form to achieve world-class collision safety and superior hazard avoidance, as well as dramatic advances in driver-responsive handling and ride comfort.
The Toyota Mirai, the world’s first hydrogen fuel cell sedan, was first launched in Europe in October 2015. The Mirai is a pioneering zero-emission car which emits only water vapor and benefits from over two decades of Toyota research and development on fuel cell technology and its world-leading experience in hybrid vehicle power systems. In 2015 the car was launched in the United Kingdom, Germany and Denmark and in 2016, in Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Sweden; its deployment will expand to other countries in Europe in future. In making the Mirai available in the market, Toyota is contributing to the development of a hydrogen society and launching a technology that will contribute to a cleaner future.
