Power Up and Sail On. Commodores Message 2013 It seemed like I just wrote the message for 2012 we had a good year. In reflecting back on the past year a lot was accomplished. John Baird our new Rear Commodore, has been teaching classes for OBYC. By the time this message gets out we'll probably have three classes under our belt. John and I thought a class on Basic Seamanship and Marlinspike would be good. There is also one we had discussed on proper use of the VHF radio. Possibly in the spring we can do a class on "getting your boat ready to use after winterization." Maybe also making sure if you get pulled over by the Coast Guard your boat will pass Coast Guard Inspection. There is more to boating than just putting fuel in and taking off on an adventure. If you are well prepared and you have some misfortune, you'll be glad you took the time and put forth the effort to be ready for unplanned circumstances. That is what the classes John has been teaching are designed to do. Continued page 2… “A lot of people ask me if I were shipwrecked, and could only have one book, what would it be? Kurt  Sample,  our  Webmaster  has  done  an  amazing  job  with  our  new  website.  Kurt  has  posted  some  great  pictures  and  articles  and  I  have  noticed  the  new  site  is  being  visited  quite  frequently.  If  you  have  pictures  or  stories  you'd  like  to  share,  send  them  to  Kurt.

Dave  Groppenberger  has  sent  out  our  scholarship  applications  for  the  new  year.  Things  are  moving  along.

We  are  trying  to  use  the  website  to  replace  the  membership  directory.  It  is  handy  to  use  instead  of  hunting  up  your  membership  booklet  that  may  get  lost.  One  of  my  goals  with  Kurts  expert  help  is  to  have  everything  that  is  contained  in  the  directory  be  available  at  our  website  online.  Ah,  the  days  of  technology.  I  never  cease  to  be  surprised  by  the  rapid  changes  in  the  field  of  communication.  Whether  it's  television  or  the  computer,  just  when  you  think  you've  figured  it  out,  they  change  something  or  you  find  out  what  you  know  or  have  is  obsolete.

If  you  have  thoughts  or  ideas  on  how  we  can  better  serve,  please  let  me  know.

My  best  to  you  all  for  the  new  year.
