Students from Farrington High School on O‘ahu discuss strategy during a HIKI NŌ Challenge.
Mercy Palilio and Alre Vilota from Farrington High School edit their HIKI NŌ Challenge entry.
By Robert PennybackerDirector of Learning Initiatives, PBS Hawai‘i
Stories for HIKI NŌ, PBS Hawai‘i’s 90-school, statewide student news network, usually take two to three months of revising and reediting to be approved for air. But three times a year, students get to test their storytelling skills under fire with the HIKI NŌ Fall, Winter and Spring Challenge competitions.
Students participating in a challenge are given just four days to conceptualize, coordinate, shoot, write and edit a story based on a theme or “prompt” given out at the beginning of the four-day window. Since no one knows the prompt beforehand, no work on the story can begin until the start of the production window. Past story prompts have included: Kuleana (Responsibility); The Story Behind the Food; The Under-Appreciated Beauty of Simple, Everyday Things; and Hawai‘i Residents Who Struggle Financially While Working Two or Three Jobs. Entries are scored on a numeric scale based on a set of criteria for storytelling, production values and how well they expressed the prompt. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place and Honorable Mention finishers receive, respectively, $500, $300, $200 and $100 in production equipment, courtesy of HIKI NŌ Challenge prize sponsor State Farm Insurance.
Watch the top stories from the 2020 HIKI NŌ Winter Challenge on Thursday, February 27 at 7:30 pm.

Connecting through Storytelling
CEO MESSAGE
Leslie Wilcox
PBS Hawai‘iPresident and CEO
Over the course of 13 years as CEO of PBS Hawai‘i, I’ve had ample opportunity to experience something very delightful about our viewers:
Many of them are every bit as compelling in communicating as our professional storytellers.
Good storytellers know their audience. They know how to connect with emotion and imagination. I think that’s why many of our programs evoke strong responses; and it’s why our viewers’ letters “get” to us.
In correspondence, some of our viewers relate family stories passed down through the generations, describing intimate conversations at pivotal times of history, such as the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, the Pearl Harbor attack and closely fought elections.
It’s a wonderful exchange – viewers writing to amplify something they saw in one of our programs, or to add context, or to riff on a related thought. Often they’re telling of their own experience, after a story that aired on PBS Hawai‘i has struck a chord in their life.
Responding to PBS NewsHour coverage of the crackdown on immigrants seeking shelter and work in the U.S., a Honolulu viewer wrote that more immigrants should be welcomed: “My grandfather, who came
from Japan, worked from morning to night for three dollars a day. I am third generation and educated … I will not work at a job where I get dirty. I will not work at a job where I get smelly. I will not work at a job that requires me to carry more than five pounds. I am a typical third-generation immigrant.”
Another viewer reached out after seeing the American Experience episode about the Pacific search for Amelia Earhart. Just as if she were having an in-person conversation, she noted that the investigation didn’t seem to include the hypothesis that the ocean had swallowed all trace of evidence.
“I think that is really what happened,” she wrote. “But empirical research is never really satisfied with a ‘nothing’ outcome. There has to be something ‘real.’ And more importantly, there has to be ‘closure,’ which may not be true.”
As author Annette Simmons said, “Story gives people enough space to think for themselves. The story develops and grows in the mind of the listener …”
We’re all the richer for connecting through storytelling.
Mahalo nui,

Maui-based Trio
Kekai Robinson Marja Lehua Apisaloma Liz Morales
By Liberty Peralta, PBS Hawai‘i
COVER STORY
Like the latest smartphone or computer software, Ahumanu founding member Liz Morales calls the band’s third and current lineup of band members “Ahumanu 3.0.”
It’s not unusual for bands to see lineup changes. But Morales, a former radio personality, is confident that this version is something special.
“We have our own sound, and that comes from working with what we have,” Morales says. “Since we had so many different players, each version of Ahumanu sounded very different, so I think it’s only until Ahumanu 3.0 that I realized, hey, this is kind of different, I like it.”
Marja Lehua Apisaloma and Kekai Robinson round out the Maui trio, whose name translates as “a gathering of birds.” Each member brings her own contributions to the Ahumanu table.

Apisaloma says her day job as a registered nurse helps add some level of authenticity to the group’s music – a reminder of how much they have to be thankful for, down to the most essential details.
“We can breathe and we can use the bathroom on our own, we can walk on our own, we can speak,” she says. “You see all of that as a nurse and see people at their most vulnerable times. It’s such a drastic difference from the entertainment industry because you put on a face and it’s all a show.”
Robinson, who heads Hawaiian immersion school Ke Kula ‘O Pi‘ilani by day, says Ahumanu is an extension of the community work that’s played an important role in her life.
“I practice Hawaiian oli (chants), and those are the messages and the voices of our ancestors coming through,” she says. “The messages that they give us are relevant now, so there’s a great sense of responsibility there to do the same in our music.”
That responsibility shows in songs like “Kahi Aloha,” one of several songs that Ahumanu performs on an upcoming episode of PBS Hawai‘i’s Nā Mele: Traditions in Hawaiian Song. Originally written as a wedding gift, “Kahi Aloha” has taken on a larger meaning in Robinson’s eyes.
“Aloha has become a big part of this contemporary move towards protecting our environment, protecting what we have,” she says. “When you stand in aloha, you can come at me and bring whatever it is that you are to me, but I am going to stand here and remain respectful towards you. It’s a discipline, and so, I understand it now. It’s not our normal state. We want to work towards aloha being a normal state.”
Through their weekly pau hana performances in Kahului, Ahumanu has a regular platform to share their messages in song, with authenticity, respect and love. Ahumanu 3.0 is on a roll, and Morales ponders what’s next.
“I’d like to be a resource for the next generation of musicians that would like to do this,” she says. “Growing up in this field, it was such a mess. I didn’t know how to get where I wanted to be and those lines were so unclear ... [now] I’m living the life, having a great time and very happy that I’m able to help perpetuate what we’ve known forever: Hawaiian music.”

There’s still some ranching at Kualoa, though the property is perhaps best known for its recreational activities and as a backdrop in blockbuster movies like Jurassic Park. 9:00 NOVA Dog Tales Dogs have long been dependable companions by our sides. But it wasn’t always that way, and a look at their closest living relative, the wolf, makes it clear why. Irene P. from West Oahu, an inspector at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu, doesn’t have a lot of time to bake from scratch. But she was so inspired by the bread-making she saw on The Great British Baking Show that she decided to try out judge Paul Hollywood’s panettone, a sweet bread of Italian origin.
“I watched the episode at least six times, and the more I watched, the more I believed I could do it,” she says. After spending $40 on ingredients, creating a mess and an unusable mound of dough, she says that she should probably leave the baking to Paul and co-judge Mary Berry!
We hope that PBS Hawai‘i Passport continues to inspire our viewers to find the courage to try new recipes, read the book which inspired a broadcast program, or travel to new destinations.
PBS Hawai‘i Passport is an added benefit that gives our donors, like Irene, access to an on-demand library of quality PBS programs, online and on mobile devices. The Passport media library currently offers donors more than a thousand shows – including episodes from The Great British Baking Show, Masterpiece, American Experience and many others, with new programs added weekly.
If you’ve made a donation of $60 per year or more, you are already eligible! You can stream Passport shows online at pbshawaii.org – or use streaming devices such as Roku and Apple TV. Learn more at pbshawaii.org/passport.
Meanwhile, our intrepid Passport viewer Irene hasn’t entirely given up on bread-making.
“Maybe if I watch the program a seventh time, it will work,” she says.
Baking a special bread treat: Is seven times the charm?

SOMEWHERE SOUTHPremieres Friday, March 27 at 8:00 pm
In her new series Somewhere South, Chef Vivian Howard (center) takes viewers on a quest for a deeper understanding of dishes that bind and define the modern American South. Through the foodways of immigrants and indigenous people, the series sheds light on a rarely seen version of the South – one made up of Lumbee Indians, Sri Lankan and Italian immigrants, as well as people who speak Gullah, Creole and much more.
