Commercialization Under Way: European Fermentation Center Opens in the UK

Barriers to Entry - SCP

• IP: How to protect a natural strain? GMO strains can be protected, but how to overcome consumer acceptance?

• Production technology: How to scale up feedstocks? Mass transfer, surface area, toxicity, safety? Proprietary reactor vs off-the-shelf?

• Product performance: All SCPs are not equivalent! Target species, product profile, inclusion level, digestability, nutritional value, palatability.

• Regulatory approval: Approvals are not generic. Approval bodies will assess potential pathogenicity (species name). New products require extensive safety testing.

• Commercial scale-up: How to cross the valley of death?
