‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street
Good Morning & Welcome to Friday's trading action at Dalal Street, dated 12th of
October 2018.
Here we go again!
The cues are more of the same from yesterday! More bad news for stock investors amidst weak
global cues. Overnight Wall Street whipsawed for a second straight session. The Dow Jones
index dived more than 500 points in another wild session; losing nearly 1,400 points over two
days as investors continued to fret over rising bond yields and the prospect of higher interest
rates.
Amid the selling, President Trump continued to criticize the Federal Reserve. His first remarks
came Wednesday when he said the central bank “has gone crazy" with their rate hikes.
On Thursday, Trump told reporters on his way to a rally in Pennsylvania that, “I think the Fed is
making a mistake. They’re so tight. I think the Fed has gone crazy,” appearing on "Fox and
Friends" in a wide-ranging interview, which included his thoughts on fiscal policy makers.
Our call of the day suggests an uninspiring performance likely on Dalal Street. That said, fresh
drubbing only below Nifty 10,171.
Well, if benchmark Nifty slips below 10,171 mark then the perma-bulls have only one option:
Just drop to two knees… lower your chin to your chest… and pray.
Outlook for Friday: Wild swings quite likely.
Dalal Street may consolidate in today's trade after a muted open. Global cues will command
attention as the rout in worldwide stock markets are on backdrop of fast-rising U.S bond yields
and signs of inflation, as these catalysts point to the fact that profit margins could narrow.
Of note, on Thursday the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note retreated slightly but remained
above 3 percent. The street usually defines “danger zone” at (3.20%-3.70%).
Also, a combination of threats likely to keep sentiments subdued. If you recollect, a news
forecast issued in its world economic outlook earlier this week, the IMF cut its global growth
forecast for this year and next to 3.7%. This reflects weaker growth in advanced economies,
rising trade tensions and higher oil prices.
As per IMF, Many emerging-market economies have higher levels of corporate and sovereign
debt, making them more vulnerable to the progressive interest-rate hikes by the Fed.
Meanwhile, also on backdrop remains the intensifying clash between Italy's new government
and the European Union over the nation's budget and that will most probably spread to other
euro-based economies, bringing ghost of slowing worldwide economy.
Long story short: Caution should continue to be the buzzword. Make no mistakes about any
intraday strength, as we still suspect, this is a bull market controlled by the bears. It is not wise
to be a bull on any intraday strength. To put it straight, treat every strength as dead cat bounce
and lighten leveraged long positions. Hurdles for Nifty at 10,501 zone.
Bottom line: Buying advised only if Nifty closes above 10,501 mark.
Earning season is upon us. Last evening TCS report Q2 which was in line with street
expectations. Q2 results of corporate India to trickle in today are:
• Friday: Hindustan Unilever, Karnataka Bank, Avenue Supermart, Jay Bharat Mauti, TATA
sponge, AU Small Finance Bank.
STOCKS TO WATCH:
• Our chart of the day suggests establishing short positions in stocks like REC, PFC and
RCOM with interweek perspective.
• Bullish stocks: PIDILITE, BIOCON, HUL, NESTLE, JUBILANT FOODS, YES BANK,
DHFL, BAJAJ FINANCE.

Technical Strategy
‘30,000 feet view’: The big picture of Dalal Street
• Bearish stocks: AMARA RAJA BATTERY, JSW STEEL, SRF, HCC.
• Show Me the Money: Sell RCOM (11.10): RCOM is signalling a major breakdown
from a lower consolidation zone on weekly charts. Interweek Strategy: Establish short
positions between 11.75-12 zone, targeting 10 and then aggressive targets located at
7.5-8 zone. Stop above 12.75.
• Stocks banned in F&O segment for today: IDBI.
GLOBAL CUES:
• The Dow Jones index tumbled in yesterday's trade as investors continued to fret over the
implication of higher bond yields on equities. Technically, Dow faces major hurdles at
27200. At Wall Street, all three indexes ended below their 200-day moving averages
FII/DII & OPTIONS DATA:
• As per Thursday’s Provisional Data available on the NSE, FII’s sold shares worth Rs.
2869.41 crores in the Indian Equity Market. DIIs on the other hand bought shares worth
Rs. 1888.18 crores in the Indian Equity market.
• As per option data, key resistance level for the September series for Nifty are at 10,500
strike price as maximum call open interest of 35.24 lakh contracts were seen at the
10,500 strike price. Maximum Put open interest of 37.82 lakh contracts was seen at the
10,000 strike price. This will act as a crucial support level for the October series.
COMMODITY CUES:
• Crude Oil prices drifted lower in yesterday's trade despite signs that Iran crude exports
are falling ahead of reimposed sanctions. The recent sequence of higher highs/lows
remains intact. Interweek strategy: Establish long positions between 5245-5275 zone,
targeting 5645 zone and then aggressive targets at 5801 with stop at 5100.
• Copper prices were seen trading firm in Thursday's trade amidst profit booking.
Interweek strategy: Establish long positions only on dips between 447-449 zone,
targeting 465 mark and then at 479 with stop at 429.
• Gold price closed on a positive note in yesterday's trade. Downside well supported near
30675 mark. Interweek strategy: Establish long positions between 31201-21401 zone,
targeting 31901 mark and then aggressive targets at 32451 with stop at 31001.
MACRO WATCH:
• Amongst macroeconomic events, India's industrial production (IIP) data for August and
retail inflation (CPI) prints for September will be released this Friday, 12th October 2018.
Industrial production grew 6.6% in July, backed by the good performance of the
manufacturing sector and higher offtake of capital goods and consumer durables. The
street is expecting the IIP numbers to remain the same for August also. Please note, if
the numbers are higher than the August month then that should infuse positive
sentiment at Dalal Street.
• The landscape is bit scary especially on the escalating trade tension between U.S-China.
This catalyst could be the real villain rattling worldwide stock markets. The heightened
tensions between U.S. -China could not only hamper U.S. economic growth but derail the
global economy at large. At the time of writing, a tit-for-tat tariff battle between Beijing
and Washington remains intact.
• The upcoming assembly elections in five states: Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan,
Chhattisgarh, Mizoram and Telangana. The Election Commission (EC) on Saturday
announced the dates for the Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and
Mizoram Assembly polls. While Chhattisgarh will go to the polls in two phases on
November 12 and 20, the Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram Assembly elections will be held
on November 28. Polling in Rajasthan and Telangana will be held on December 7.
Counting of votes will be held across all the five states on December 11.
In Thursday's trade, INDRAPRASTHA GAS (IGL)
was seen consolidating at lower levels. The stock
in Wednesday's trading session was seen
attempting a major rebound from a lower
consolidation zone on the daily charts.
Technically, the stock is in consolidation mode at
lower levels and the momentum oscillators are
signaling a major rebound on the buy mode. Any
move above 255 zone will confirm strength which
also needs to be backed by increases in volumes.
The stock is seen moving up on daily charts,
backed by positive divergences.
Key support to watch in near term is at 221 zone.
Medium term supports seen at 207-209 zone.
Intermonth perspective: Establish long
positions at CMP, and on dips between 221-223
zone, targeting 245-255 zone and then at 275-
281 mark with strict stop at 207.

CURRENCIES & BONDS:
• In Thursday's trade, the Indian Rupee touched a fresh all-time low of 74.50 against the dollar, before recovering all of the day's
losses by the end of the session.
The Rupee may weaken further as the U.S. dollar is seen strengthening further against most of its major rivals.
What Technical Tells Us on Nifty:
After Wednesday's festive buying spree at Dalal Street, the bears came back with a bang in yesterday's trade, as the benchmark Nifty dipped towards the 6-
month low. Sensex ended just above the psychological 34001 mark, down 760 points for the day.
Amidst sea of red, the major losers in Sensex pack were, State Bank of India was down 5.66%, Tata Steel (down 4.72%), Mahindra & Mahindra (down
4.67%), Vedanta (down 4.36%), Infosys (down 3.58%), Tata Motors (down 3.36%) and Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (down 3.31%).
Broader markets were seen trading with negative bias. The BSE Mid-Cap index fell 2.34%. The BSE Small-Cap index fell 1.41%.
Technically speaking, key support for the day on Nifty is at 10,171 mark. The technical landscape will worsen further if Nifty closes below the 10,171
mark as that would open the door to massive technical selling, possibly quickly towards the 9,951-10,001 zone.
The intraday bias is neutral/negative and selling on any corrective strength should be the preferred strategy.
The make or break hurdles are at 10,501 mark.
The best way to trade this market is to establish long positions only above Nifty 10,501 mark. Until then, makes sense to keep books light. Also, we believe,
this market has much work to do to be on the ultra-bullish side again, so the best strategy is to wait it out.
The price action for Nifty is suggesting that we are likely to see an 10,100-10,811 range in near term with neutral bias.
Bulls Vs. Bears: Time to Pick a Side!!
Volatility likely to be the hallmark of today's trade.
Preferred trade on Nifty: Nifty (10235): Sell only on strength between 10321-10351 zone, targeting 10171 zone and then aggressive targets at 10001-
10101 zone with stop at 10545.
Preferred trade on Bank Nifty: Bank Nifty (24783): Sell between 25175-25201 zone, targeting 24501 zone and then aggressive targets at 24001-24151
zone with stop at 25901.
