Influencing the next generation in boxing

Training Champions The CSES team worked with Sheffield welterweight Kell Brook prepare for his recent IBF world championship winning fight. Dave Hembrough worked closely with Kell providing strength and conditioning support, whilst physiologist Alan Ruddock implemented treadmill runs and tapering strategies in the latter stages to optimise Kell’s physical condition.

Combat Conditioning – Saturday Sessions A strength and conditioning training clinic for boxers and combat athletes of all ages and abilities. Regulars will go through the Combat Conditioning 'Graduation', where Junior and Senior participants will complete Bronze, Silver and Gold stages. This creates quality long term athletic development program targeting movement, strength, power and fitness.

Combat Conditioning – Training Clusters A full strength and conditioning program for large or small groups with an individual programming approach. Programs consist of 2-4 sessions a week, focused on developing strength, power, speed and aerobic fitness. Optimal physical performance is ensured with extensive performance testing, training monitoring and wellness assessments.

Movement Clinic The movement clinic integrated exercises into technical boxing sessions to promote key movement patterns and mobility. Using the results from a functional movement screen (FMS), we give the boxers a homework program with individual recommendations to work on their mobility daily. The coach is also provided with a detailed gym report.

Physiological Testing Battery We defined a series of valid fitness tests for boxing so we can compare a boxers fitness levels with age, ability and weight class as well as before and after a training project. The project also highlighted physiological characteristics important for boxing and major contributors to punching force. This was fed back to athletes and coaches to inform future training goals.

Integrated Scientific Support We have been out on the road providing a range of scientific support methods to gyms and boxing organisations. We provided the Yorkshire ABA squad training camp with heart rate analysis during 3x3 minute rounds of sparring. We also have recorded blood lactate and heart rate data for sparring, bag and pad training drills.
