Salute Columbus, Ind, May 25, 2012 3 David Bowden David Bowden, founding Music Director of the award-winning Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, just completed his 25th season leading the orchestra. He earned a doctorate in orchestral con- ducting and a master’s degree in choral conducting from the Indi- ana University Jacobs School of Music. He met his wife, Donna, while attending the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. Originally from North Carolina, he loves both the mountains and the ocean. He is an avid reader and a basketball fan, and enjoys spending time with his family – including his granddaughter, Eliana. Dr. Bowden also con- ducts orchestras in Carmel and Terre Haute, Indiana, and has had many guest conducting opportunities across America and in Europe. David is deeply committed to music education and loves to see students excited about music—he knows that making music changes lives. Winner of the Patriot Award in 2005, David said, “e annual Salute! Concert is perhaps my most favorite of the entire year – my father-in-law is a WWII Ex-POW and I believe it is important to remember and honor those who have served our country and, in some cases, given the ultimate sacrifice, because freedom isn’t free.” Major General Mark A. Pillar, USAF (Ret.) General Pillar retired two years ago aſter 38 years of service to his country. His last assignment was at the Pentagon in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition. His other assignments included Da Nang Air Base, Republic of South Viet- nam, where he served as an EC-47 pilot and flew over 90 combat missions. Upon his return to the United States, he began flying KC- 135 refueling aircraſt at Grissom Air Force Base, Bunker Hill, IN. In 1978 he transferred to the Air Force Reserve and held numerous positions within the 434th Air Refueling Group. General Pillar flew mission in support of Desert Shield (1990), Desert Storm (1991) and the Bosnia no-fly zone (1999). During Operation Joint Force he was the vice commander of the 60th Air Expeditionary Wing, Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany. Mark and his wife, Linda live in Columbus and have two children, Matt and Lacey. Mark serves on the local Red Cross Board of Directors, and is the incoming president of the Philharmonic Board of Directors. Joshua Conyers Joshua Conyers debuted with the Philharmonic this past March to rave reviews from the audience, the newspaper reviewer, and the orchestra and chorus with whom he worked. Born and raised in the Bronx, New York, Josh has made a name for himself along the East Coast in a variety of opera productions. In 2010, Mr. Conyers made his Professional operatic debut as the Mandarin in Giacomo Puccini’s Turandot at Piedmont Opera in Winston Salem, NC. Recently, he sang the role of e Vicar in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring, and Lord Guglielmo Cecil in Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda. “Conyers poured forth a deliciously honeyed baritone that would seduce anyone. If his characterization was more hearty than suave, he still effortlessly summoned up a laser-beam look that communicated hidden danger and volatility” (Joanne Sydney Lessner- Opera News 7/15/11) as Don Giovanni at the Martina Arroyo Foundation Prelude to Performance Program. Josh is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and is currently pursuing a Masters’ Degree at Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in Vocal Performance.
