Columbus Club Donates $1850 To Senior Center Columbus Club presents Check for $1850 to the Senior Center Director Patty Evansco. Columbus Club members sponsored a Bar-B-Q earlier in the year to make this donation possible. Thank you to the members of the Columbus Club and to everyone who purchased meals.

Free Chili Supper January 8, 2013 is the date for Mike Todd’s second annual Chili Supper. Mike will serve his famous chili from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Community Center. Bring a neighbor or meet some new neighbors at the Community Center on January 8, 2013.

Thanks to everyone who has gave so generously during December. The ongoing support of Individuals makes the Millstadt Senior Center’s work possible. Many of us make “Resolutions” for the New Year. I always

remember a quote from Oprah Winfrey who said, “Cheers to a New Year and another chance for us to get it right.” Do you make New Year’s resolutions? Do they have to do with dieting and exercising more? Perhaps your goals are to reconnect with old friends or develop new friendships? Maybe you are interested in taking up a new hobby or spending more time doing a current one? The Millstadt Senior Center may be just the place for you to act on your 2013 resolutions! The Millstadt Senior Center has also made some resolutions (or goals) for 2013 including: • Expanding our outreach efforts to raise our visibility in the community and to build a broad public awareness of the needs and personal opportunities to support senior services. • Developing a formalized plan to target and engage volunteers age 50+ who are looking for meaningful and collaborative volunteer opportunities. Volunteers Wanted If you have a couple of hours per month to visit with seniors in area care or nursing centers we have an opportunity for you to deliver the monthly Senior Talk newsletter. The Senior Center has a list of seniors who are currently residents at Grand Manor, Columbia Rehabilitation and Nursing home, Our Lady of the Snows and other area senior resident homes who would appreciate receiving a copy of the monthly newsletter, a short visit and perhaps a birthday or greeting card signed by seniors at the Senior Center. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

Meals on Wheels Program The Millstadt Township Senior Services Meals on Wheels Program delivers meals to qualified, homebound adults age 60 and above who are unable to shop or cook for themselves. Hot meals can be delivered Monday through Friday, and frozen meals can be available for weekends, if necessary. Special diets are available, and a $4.50 donation is requested. Call (618) 476-3731 for more information. If you would like to volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program your help would be appreciated by many.

Let’s give a cheer for Fred Hotz the former MCS basketball coach is now retiring from the position of Millstadt Township Clerk. Fred Hotz’s father was a pastor and the Hotz family moved several times before making Maeystown, Illinois their home. After graduating from Valmeyer High School, he completed his college degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale.

In 1958, he arrived in Millstadt with degree in hand, to teach social studies, coach basketball and later began the track program at MCS. Fred met his wife Carol, the science teacher with a classroom across the hall from his, at MCS and they were married in 1965. They have two children: son Mike and his wife Cara live in Chicago and a daughter Cathy and her husband Chris live in Millstadt with daughter Kelsey, a freshman at BTHS West. In 1973 Fred ran for Millstadt Township Trustee and held the position from 1973-1981. From 1993-1997 Fred served as Township Supervisor. During his term as Supervisor, Fred and Joel Mueth Village Trustee began the recycling program that continues on the first Saturday of each month at the Township Building. From 1997 to 2013 Fred served as Township Clerk. He will not seek re-election for the Clerk position in 2013. In 2000 Illinois marked 150 years of Township government. In recognition of the bi-centennial, Fred and Don Mehrtens planted a President Lincoln white oak tree at the Millstadt Township Building. The white oak came from a graft taken from a white oak, known as the Lincoln Oak, in Charleston, Illinois. The site on September 18, 1858, of one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates. The Lincoln Oak is the young tree on the left of the Township Building when looking at it from Jefferson Street. Fred and Carol have enjoyed living in Millstadt and will spend time gardening and traveling. In addition, Fred might sit under the Lincoln Oak and just enjoy the time-off. Several years ago the members of the Millstadt Historical Society were speaking about old traditions that our German ancestors commonly participated in; one of which was winemaking. The members decided the Society should sponsor a Homemade Wine Making Contest, and the third annual contest was held November 27, 2012 at the Community Center. We have always had a nice variety of wines in the competition, and this year’s was no exception, reported Glenn Schaefer, President of the Millstadt Historical Society. Wine flavors included elderberry, strawberry, grape, cranberry, cherry, blackberry and persimmon. Past years entries included wheat, watermelon and dandelion. This year’s winners were; First Place, Doreen Baltz with her white grape/cherry wine; Second Place, Glenn Mehrtens with his elderberry wine and Third Place to Gene Hermann, with his persimmon wine. After the contest, members of the Historical Society and contestants enjoyed an evening of wine tasting and dining on cheese, crackers, and homemade summer sausage, the latter provided by Tom Baltz. Clothing Donations Is it time to clean closets to make room for those Christmas gifts you know you’ll be getting? Remember your clothing items donated to the collection box at the IGA parking lot will add to the proceeds IGA collects and donates to the Senior Center. Proceeds from the clothing collection box at IGA along with funds from aluminum cans collected at the Community Center help maintain the Meals on Wheels program for Millstadt Township. With the help of your donations over 20,000 meals were served to Seniors in Millstadt Township last year.

JANUARY 1963 First class mail rates were increased from one cent to five cents. Construction will begin on a new bridge at Poplar Street in July 1963. The bridge should be completed in 1965 at an estimated cost of $30,000,000. The Harrisonville Telephone Company’s Waterloo exchange converted to a dial system. More than 2000 phones were involved. For $0.49 and a coupon you could buy one pound of Dining Car coffee at Witcher’s Bi-Rite. The Firemen’s Ball advertised two dances on January 19, 1963 with Artie Steppig’s Orchestra playing at the Legion Hall and Elmer Humphries’ band playing modern music at the VFW Hall. One ticket was good for both bands, and included lunch and refreshments.

Baked Potato Soup 2/3 cup margarine 2/3 cup flour 7 cup milk 1 ¼ cup cheddar 1 cup sour cream 4 large baked potatoes, peeled, cubed 1 bunch green onions, chopped Melt margarine, add flour, gradually add milk, cook till thickened. Add potatoes and onions, bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add bacon, cheese, salt, pepper and sour cream. Serve hot, top with more cheddar cheese.

Magic Lamp A man was walking down a beach when he stumbled across a lamp partially buried in the sand. When he picked it up and rubbed its side a genie appeared. The genie thanked him and offered to grant him one wish. After a few minutes of thought

Missing Hamster A carpet layer had just finished installing carpet for a lady. He stepped out for a smoke, only to realize he’d lost his cigarettes. In the middle of the room, under the carpet, was a bump. “No sense pulling up the entire floor for one pack of smokes,” he said to himself. He proceeded to get out his hammer and flattened the hump. As He was cleaning up, the lady came in. “Here,” she said, handing him his pack of cigarettes. I found them in the hallway. “Now,” she said, “if I could only find my hamster.”

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.

Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. Senior Information and Assistance provides information or help with services and benefits to residents of Millstadt age 60 and over. We will also visit homebound seniors. If you need this service or would like to schedule a visit, call Millstadt Township Senior Center at 618-476-3731.

Make a Contribution There are many ways to contribute to Millstadt Senior Center:

Gifts by Cash or Check We accept gifts by cash or check by mail and in person. Include your name, address and phone number. Checks should be made payable to Millstadt Township Senior Services.

Memorial Gifts and Bequests The Millstadt Senior Center is establishing an endowment fund of memorial gifts and bequests, to ensure the future of senior services in Millstadt.

We hope that you will remember the Center when planning your estate, or as a fitting means of honoring a departed friend or loved one.

All memorial gifts and bequests will be acknowledged in the Center’s newsletter. If you would like to make a provision in your will, the following form is suggested:

Linda Lehr Schedules Office Hours Linda Lehr, Millstadt Village Trustee, will hold office hours on Saturday, January 12, 2013, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Millstadt Village Hall located at 111 West Laurel.
