Phone Scam Targets The Elderly If you don’t know the caller HANG-UP! Telephone scammers are hitting the elderly hard with robocalls, calls constantly repeated, and using this form of cheap technologies to cheat seniors. Robocalls are placed for less than one cent per minute. As usual, Congress is slow in fighting back and limiting these automatic calls. These scammers are often in over-seas centers like Costa Rica, Peru and the Philippines. Many scams are set-up in foreign countries to escape from detection and punishment. Federal law allows charities, political campaigns, and groups like schools to use robocalls while telemarketers are barred from using recorded sales calls without a written consent. Well that law needs some more work! Remember if the IRS calls you and demands money, HANG-UP!

Homecoming Parade 2016 Labor week-end, September 3 and 4 will again be the time for the annual Millstadt Homecoming including two parades, food and refreshments. New Game Going On At Senior Center Are you tired of playing board games in which it takes a long time to learn the rules, and then during the game there are arguments over those rules as you learn to play the game? Shut the Box is also known as Canoga. Being a traditional pub game without any national governing body, variations of equipment and rules abound. Shut the Box is just the game for you then, as the rules are very simple. Your goal is to eliminate a series of numbers by rolling those numbers on one die or the combination of multiple dice. You can even eliminate multiple numbers that can be added up to total the sum of your two dice. The player with the lowest score wins in the Shut the Box Game.

Millstadt’s Yesterdays From the files of the Enterprise, Millstadt Enterprise dated August 25, 1970: August 26, 1910-Geroge Hoeser, proprietor of the West-end saloon was advertising a moon light dance at his place. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a supplemental

food source for seniors age 60 and older who fall within 130% of the federal poverty guidelines—seniors may participate in this program while also receiving food assistance via food pantries, meals on wheels, and/or SNAP (food stamps). The Foodbank partners with an organization that elects to administer the CSFP boxes to qualified seniors. Millstadt Township Senior Services would receive a once a month free delivery of free boxes to be distributed to the seniors signed up for the program; each box contains about 16 shelf stable items, plus cheese. The program does require some administrative work including, application sign up and verification of seniors, maintenance of sign-in sheets, and re-certification of participants that may be conducted verbally every 6 months. If you are interested in signing up for this program and fit into the income guidelines below, please contact Patty Evansco at 46-3731 for an appointment.

DID YOU SIGN IN?

Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

National Honor Society Students Bring Joy To The Meals On Wheels Program This Summer Eli Tiemann and Amanda Wegner are busy packing meals. The students are helping with Meals on Wheels. This has been truly an experience for them realizing the importance of bringing the meal to those that can’t go out and enjoying the socialization it also brought. They are seniors this year at Belleville Township West and members of the Illinois National Honor Society. These students have worked many hours to achieve such recognition among their peers. We had 11 students this summer and they all are planning to go on to college and are ready for the challenges their future holds for them.

WRITER’S GUIDELINES One does not have to be a professional writer in order to submit articles to Senior Talk. All it takes is the desire to share your thoughts or feelings with the rest of us. Tell us about what matters to you. Share your his-tory, your fears, and your triumphs. There is a “Brag Corner,” where you can tell others about your new car, or how your grandchild just graduated from Harvard, or about your prize-winning roses. Give us your recipe for deviled eggs or tell us how you stay married to the same person for 50 years! It is best to keep the length of the article to no more than 500 words. We reserve the right to edit all materials. Be sure to include your name, address, and telephone number and email address, if you have one. Articles can be dropped off at the center, mailed, or emailed to [email protected]

SHIP Corner Millstadt Township Senior Center is a sponsoring agency for Senior Health Insurance Program help and we recently received our 2015 updated Manual. During the coming months I will be sharing with you some information that I feel is important and informational. Organization and Administration of the SHIP Program: SHIP was initiated in July of 1988 by the Illinois Department of Insurance in response to the needs of Illinois’ senior citizens regarding their health insurance. In April of 2013, under Executive Order by the Governor, SHIP was transferred to the Illinois Department on Aging. The organizational structure of SHIP consists of: • The Illinois Department on Aging, which provides initial training, continuing education and ongoing support of SHIP counselors; • The sponsoring organization (Millstadt Township Senior Services), which provides coordinators, office space and office support services; • The coordinator (Patty Evansco), who is responsible for the administrative aspects of the SHIP program, which include publicizing SHIP services, recruiting volunteers, scheduling counseling sessions and responding to counselors’ needs; and • Counselor Patty Evansco meets with clients individually to provide objective information about health insurance, advocacy assistance, or referral if appropriate. The state is divided geographically into four separate SHIP regions: Cook County, Northern Illinois, Central Illinois and Southern Illinois. Within each region, counselors are organized in to units that serve a specific geographic area, usually designated by counties.

Personal Bests My goal for 2016 was to lose just 10 pounds. Only 15 to go. I don’t mean to brag but, I just finished my 14-day diet in 3 hours and 20 minutes. A recent study has found that women who carry a little extra weight live longer than men who mention it. I used to be able to pull all-nighters but now I can barely pull all-dayers.

Do you shop on Amazon? Now there is a new version of the company's website – smile.amazon.com – the company will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to charity. Customers pick their charity through the new website and there are almost one million to choose from, including Sandra Marie Bereitschaft Foundation (supports Millstadt, Freeburg and Smithton Meals on Wheels program). There is no cap on the amount Amazon will donate and almost every physical product sold by the company is eligible, which means tens of millions of items. Digital goods are not included, but that may come in the future. Everything else about the Amazon online shopping experience stays the same, including the shopping cart, wish lists and shipping options. The prices will also be the same, so these donations will suck some of the profit out of each sale Amazon makes through the program. Please be sure to sign up, shop and add “Sandra Marie Bereitschaft Foundation” as your designated charity. Thank you. http://smile.amazon.com

SENIOR NEWS 15 AUGUST 2016

Memories Of My Pet Skunk, "Peanuts"...

Once upon a time long, long ago, I had a deorderized pet skunk named "Peanuts". How did I find myself with this little friend? My Dad, Howard Germann, was an avid outdoorsman. As a little girl, he was my hero. Times were more simple then, and part of my entertainment was to listen to the stories of the adventures that he and his buddies enjoyed in the outdoors. At one time, they came across a family of orphaned baby skunks. It was not uncommon in those days to deordorize the babies and have them become pets, much like a cat, and have them around the farming properties to act in a similar manner as having cats...and also to ward off strangers! In our case, we lived in the village and that was a bit different. My Mother, Ophelia Germann, who was the more refined partner in the marriage, was not happy about having "Peanuts" in our home, so my Dad built a little house with a cage for "Peanuts"; and he was kept outside. He had a little collar like a puppy would have to identify him. I'm very sad to report that somebody stole my little friend, and he was never returned. A memory of that era has been published in the Millstadt Historical Society Calendar for the month of September, 2016. The black and white picture shows the Millstadt Sportsmen’s Club float in the annual homecoming parade, probably around 1950. I'm standing in the front of a little log cabin. My Grandpa, Otto Germann, is sitting on the float with a hunting dog, along with other outdoorsmen. My Dad is holding my pet skunk, "Peanuts", along with one of his buddies, Percy Muskopf, who is also holding a pet skunk. Other men appearing are Leroy Procasky, Johnny Pflugmach and Kenny Schubert. My Dad was always full of fun! He had a plastic water pistol with some of his sister, my Aunt Fern's perfume in it. She was the more glamorous member of the family. Dad squirted the parade watchers and had fun watching their expressions! Aunt Fern was standing next to a lady who had been squirted. Legend has it that she heard it said, "Pew! Did you smell that skunk"! I can only imagine the expression on Aunt Fern's face when she heard that comment...knowing that lady was smelling her perfume! Respectfully Submitted, Rose Marie Fitzgerald e-mail: [email protected]

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them. Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.

SENIOR NEWS 20 AUGUST 2016

Ed Caumiant Ed G. Caumiant, 78, of Millstadt, Ill., born February 22, 1938, in Belleville, Ill., died Sunday, July 24, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill. Ed was a resident of rural Millstadt where he personally built the family home 41 years ago. He began his work life as a newsboy and had numerous stories about the antics and lessons learned in those days. After high school, he was employed by Kroger's on West Main Street, working everything from bagging, to restocking shelves, to produce manager. During those years, he was also elected as President of the Retail Clerks Union Local 219. Then a promotion to Head Clerk took him to the new Kroger store in Cahokia, Ill., where he met his future wife, "Dee". In 1967 he accepted a job as manager of Sharon's, an independent grocer in East St Louis, Ill. A year later he was manager of Wade Square Tom Boy in Belleville, Ill. In 1972, Ed left the grocery store and became a business agent for Local 219. Serving through numerous mergers and name changes, he retired as an Executive Vice President and Business Manager of United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 881, with members covering much of Southern Illinois. Ed and Dee were able to retire the same day in 1996. On that first Monday with no job, he quipped, "This is gonna be a looooong coffee break!". In 20 years of joint retirement they enjoyed welcoming their only grandchild into the family (and babysitting every chance they got); some travel which included a Disneyworld trip dubbed "The best vacation ever" by their then 8 year old grandson; a little gardening, and a lot of time for another cup of coffee. Surviving are his wife, DeLena, nee Davis, Caumiant, whom he married December 10, 1967 in East St. Louis, Ill.; his daughter, Cheryl D. (Susan Morris) Caumiant of Harris, Minn.; his son, Eddie A. (Jennifer) Caumiant, of Belleville, Ill.; and grandson, Eddie P. Caumiant, of Belleville, Ill.

Rita Cindrell Rita Kay Cindrell, nee Ivy, 64, of Millstadt, Ill., born March 3, 1952, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away Friday, June 17, 2016, at her home. Rita started teaching in 1978 for the Dupo Community School District where she taught pre-school and early childhood development. She retired in 2012 after 34 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy C. "Bo" and Eva Mae, nee Pentecost, Ivy; and her brother-in-law, Norman Plaisted. Surviving are her husband, Steven Cindrell; her son, Joshua (Sarah) Cindrell; her grandchildren, Allison and Tiffany Cindrell; and her two sisters, Lisa Plaisted and Tina (Bill "Scrap") Jenkins. She is also survived by other relatives and numerous friends. Please note that the family respectfully request that no flowers be sent at this time, but donations to the memorial fund would be greatly appreciated to support the advancement of early childhood education. Rita K. Cindrell Memorial Fund, Inc., c/o Josh Cindrell, 1626 Shadow Ridge, Columbia, Ill.

Valerie Hargraves Valerie Lynn Hargraves, 60, of Millstadt, Ill., born June 23, 1956, in Belleville, Ill., passed away July 22, 2016, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo. Valerie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, number one sister, aunt, godmother, and dear friend. She loved life and treasured her family. Valerie met the love of her life, Randy, as a freshman at Belleville West. After dating for five years they were married on August 9, 1975. For the next 40 years they were inseparable attending countless parties, picnics, parades and family functions. She passionately followed sporting events with the Cardinals, Blues and Rams. Valerie loved the beach, shopping, baking cookies and spoiling her grandchildren. Valerie dedicated her life to raising her family. She was extremely active in her children's lives and participated in the PTO, Room Mother's Club, Sports Boosters, Band Parents, and Junior Women's Club. She loved spending holidays with her family. Christmas and Halloween were her favorites. She prided herself in decorating her home and garden. She loved soap operas, TV shows and movies. She and Randy would often watch shows into the early morning hours. Valerie was never happier than when watching a good show with a "jack and coke" in her hand and her golden retriever, Harvey, by her side. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Betty, nee Moore, Hoffmann; and her grandmother, Anita, nee Bartelbort, Hoffmann. Surviving are her beloved husband, Randy; and two daughters, Holley (George) Aplin and Brittney (Grant) Mechlin. She was "YiYi"to four precious grandchildren, Jerry Aplin, Bree Aplin, Violet Aplin, and Josie Mechlin. Also surviving are her loving sister, Gayla (Stan) VanSant and nephew and godson, Ian VanSant; brother-in-law, Rick Hargraves and nephew, Chris (Laura) Hargraves. She will be deeply missed by family and countless friends whose lives she touched. Memorials in Valerie's memory may be made to the Belleville Area Humane Society, 1301 S. 11th St., Belleville, Ill. 62226 or the American Lung Association , 3000 Kelly Lane, Springfield, Ill. 62711.
