Solar powered greenhouse outside Pupin Hall

Proposal

The Exterior

The Interior

● Provide aesthetically pleasing lounge● Serve as a warm pitstop in winter● Offer opportunity to help grow fresh produce● Allow Columbia Food Sustainability Project to run all

year round● Grow produce for Columbia dining hall● Encourage future use of clean energy like solar power

Purpose

Solar Energy● Electrons gain Ek=hf from light photons from the sun● This creates a voltage and DC current between the two

plates of the solar panel diode

● This is then converted to AC to use with common appliances

Building Designs

Roof provides the ideal 40.8° incline for the panels to rest on while also creating the greenhouse effect

Roof: Combining Solar and Greenhouse Designs

● Outdoor seating provides refreshing views of the campus

● Indoor seating offers warmth in the winter and tranquil view of the plants

Seating Accommodations

● One refrigerated drink machine outside the greenhouse

Vending Machines

Energy Required: 6.60 kWh/day

● 16 lockers to charge phones during the day

Phone Charging Stations

Energy Required: 1.92 kWh/day

● Twelve .19W LED lights to provide extra light during the day as needed

● Powered by excess power stored in the batteries during the night

LED Lighting

Energy Required: .00228 kWh/day

● Automatic watering system for the plants

Sprinkler System

Energy Required: .074 kWh/day

Automatic Doors

Energy Required: 0.140 kWh/day

● Synchronized automatic system keeps the heat in the greenhouse

● Handicap accessible● Accommodates “lazy”

college students

Live Power Consumption Monitor● Monitor to show

how much power each system is using at a given time

● Allows passers-by to visually witness the effective use of green energy Energy Required: 0.050 kWh/day

Total Energy Requirements

(.5kWh/day)(18 FS-3100 solar panels) = 9kWh/day
