Shelving

Wood Top

Wood top benches are available as inserts to a metal frame or can be free floating on shelf supports (as shown at left). The slats are constructed of Mahogany wood which resists expansion and rotting.

Metal or Plastic Top

Fixed shelves can also have a metal mesh or recycled-content, black polyethylene top. These materials are open and allow water to flow. All shelves are contained in an aluminum frame.

Glass Top

Glass shelves are commonly used in garden windows or a space that is not a greenhouse. The shelves are custom designed to your dimensions. When stacked, light can travel through the shelves to lower plants.

Supports

• Decorative corners: A cast aluminum element with a decorative style.

• Flat metal support: can be designed to support the shelf from above or underneath the unit.

Greenhouse Accessories Plant Hangers

Aluminum Tube Hanger

A fixed aluminum tube runs the length of the greenhouse at eave height. The tube is attached at each bay with a clip and can be painted to match the frame for an additional charge.

Sliding Plant Hanger

A unique system that consists of a metal bar with individual carriers inside the bar. Each carrier has wheels which allow the gardener to slide hanging baskets left and right.

Decorative Corner

Cast aluminum plant hangers with a historically inspired, ornate design. This plant hanger is meant to be noticed and is painted to match the structure’s frame. Each corner typically holds one hanging basket.

Aluminum Truss

This structural support truss is specially designed into the greenhouse frame and can be used as a plant hanger, as they are able to hold heavy plants. Multiple trusses can be designed into greenhouses for large collections of hanging baskets.

Ring and Collar

Ring and collars are a historical accessory often used for decorative and/or structural purposes. They are often accented with an applique, painted to match the frame finish, and can span the width of the greenhouse.

Single Pant Hanger

Individual o-hooks are inserted into the rafter screw track. Each hook holds one hanging basket and does not penetrate or create holes in the frame.

The purpose of a plant hanger is to accommodate hanging baskets and additional growing space.

Pleated Gravity Fed Shades

These shades can be used on both the roof and walls. When positioned in a roof, the shades will use a Roman fold style. If placed in the wall, the shades can be flat mounted on a roller or Roman fold. This system is typically used on sloped roofs. The shades are mounted to the interior of the glass roof, and a manual pull or motor moves them up and down. Shades are individually sized to fit between each rafter section. Numerous colors and openness are available.

Wide Span Horizontal Shade

This option spans horizontally across the eave of a greenhouse. Shades are mounted directly to the eave. The blinds are designed in a Roman fold style. When extended, they allow heat to be held above the system in the ridge, while the growing space remains cooler. On cool winter days, the shades can be retracted to allow sunlight and heat into the structure. Varying fabrics, types, colors, and openess are available with manual or motorized operations.

Greenhouse Shades

All shades for a greenhouse are built for high moisture areas and are water resistant. The shade materials are also bacteria and fungal resistant. Each type of shade system is suitable for residential and commercial greenhouses. As a rule of thumb, a greenhouse shade should be around 25% open. Lower openesses are suitable for low light plants and orchids.

Solar Innovations, Inc. in-system skylights are capable of being installed on any structure, including greenhouses, sunrooms, pool enclosures, and conservatories. This type of ventilation is also available on traditionally constructed roofs consisting of shingles or standing seam. Function is similar to a ridge vent, but the skylight has a higher profile. Ridge vents are for structures with pitches not used below 3/12, and the operable skylight can be used on lower pitches. As hot air rises, it becomes trapped in the ridge line. The skylight will open, and release the stagnant air. This system is ideal for shallow pitched roof lines. Skylights can be manually operated or feature a motor. Multiple bays can be synchronized to open at the same time.

In-System Skylights

Glass structures need ventilation, be it a greenhouse, conservatory, or pool enclosure. Without proper aeration, the structure will overheat in warm weather. The space essentially becomes a unbearably hot, large glass box, if proper ventilation is not supplied. Both ridge vents and eave vents can be set to automatically open when a specified temperature is reached.

Solar Innovations, Inc. offers two options: ridge and eave vents. As hot air rises, it becomes trapped in the structure’s peak and needs to escape. The ridge vent will open, either manually or motorized and release the air. Ridge vents can be a single bay or feature multiple bays that are all connected.

The eave vents (or sashes) are located on the structure’s walls and will also open. This will allow cool, fresh air to be brought into the structure. The air will circulate through the room and lower the temperature. This will make the room far more comfortable and help to reduce the spread of diseases in greenhouse plants.

Greenhouse Accessories Circulation Fans

Circulation fans are needed in a greenhouse to grow healthy plants. Stagnant air breeds diseases; the use of circulation fans cuts down on the spread of fungi and pests. After watering the leaves of plants, they become moist and combine with warm temperatures, diseases will grow. Circulation fans help to dry plants quicker and reduces pests. A greenhouse can have hot and cold pockets of air that circulation fans help to eliminate by combining all the air inside the space.

Two fans are typically used in a greenhouse and placed in opposite corners (see diagrams below). Various sizes are available depending on greenhouse dimensions.

Riser Misting System

A riser misting system is designed for flexibility. The system is mobile; if you change your greenhouse configuration often, this system may be your best choice. Risers can be placed in any given location on the benches. A mist is sprayed over the top of the riser and can be relocated to a different area at any time.

Drip Misting System

The drip misting system is used for slow water release. This system is great for gardeners who travel frequently or have busy schedules. A plastic hose runs the length of your bench, drip tubes are attached to the hose and supply individual plants with slow and steady drips of water. Holes can be filled and the tubes rearranged if necessary.

Polyrail Misting System

A polyrail misting system is well suited for large expanses in a greenhouse. Rolling benches are often designed to use the system. There are vertical stakes in each rail that run the length of the benches. The water supply is located within these rails. Nozzles are inserted into the water supply, and a fine mist is brought over the plants.

Suspended Misting System

The suspended misting system is elevated above benches to provide maximum bench space suspended from the rafters. The system runs the length of the benches, suspended from a jack chain. Nozzles are again inserted directly into the water supply. This system can be positioned at virtually any desired height.

Jet Fog Misters

Jet fog misters are used for both watering and humidity. This system is typically mounted at the eave line and sprays a fine mist. Greenhouses with delicate plants, like orchids, operate efficiently with the fine mists. Timing and frequency can be automated.

Humidifiers

Humidifiers are used in greenhouses to bring moisture into the air. Many plants require high levels of humidity; for example, orchids need 60-80% humidity, depending upon the variety. Many tropical or ornamental plants also require humidity levels in the range of 50-60%. Solar Innovations, Inc. offers a line of humidifiers that will be sized to fit your greenhouse; from a small hobby house, to a large research facility. All humidifiers are mounted to the roof and atomize water into a very fine mist.

Evaporative Coolers

A greenhouse has the potential to overheat in summer, even with ventilation. In order to preserve the plants, cooling needs to be incorporated. Solar Innovations, Inc. recommends an evaporative cooler which reduces temperature and adds humidity to the greenhouse.

The evaporative cooler draws air over a wet pad, by way of a fan. As the water passes over the pads, it evaporates and takes heat with it. The air then passes into the greenhouse and can be up to 30°cooler.

Evaporative coolers consume ¼ less energy than traditional air conditioners, which translates to lower utility bills.

Evaporative coolers exchange air; rather thanre-circulating stagnant air; a benefit for greenhouses which need fresh air to combat pests and disease.

Each unit is vented to the outside, with the physical unit also being located outdoors. The unit’s exterior is a neutral tan, blending easily with the building’s facades.

Greenhouse Accessories Cold Frames

Cold Frames

Cold frames are used to extend the growing season. Plants can be grown in the frames during early spring and late fall. The framing is made of aluminum which will not rot or swell like traditional wooden cold frames. The protection of the insulated glass captures heat for young seedlings. During summer, the lids can be lifted and plants grown directly in the soil. Plants like figs and caladiums, when wrapped in insulation, can often be overwintered in a cold frame.
