To use the COLTS Laboratories Performance Seal in advertising requires that the product be tested for the certification to remain valid. The number of tests required for validation vary from 3 to 9 depending on the product being tested. (e.g, lenses, frames, lens cloths, dyes, etc.)

"SQ" is an approximate statistical quantity. The precise statistical quantity will vary from test to test and sample batch to sample batch. Precise amounts can be computed for a specific test if desired by the customer. For ease of use "SQ" is intended as a simplification to reach approximate values on which to base claims.

Lens quantities listed are the minimum number for that test. Not shown in each number for that test are the control lenses supplied by COLTS Laboratories for tests requiring these lenses.

COLTS will surface and edge lenses if desired. See next page for details.

Reports will be primarily in graphical format. The test results will be relative to a statistically significant database created and maintained by COLTS Laboratories. In no case will pass/fail judgement be made unless specifically for a customer supplying performance criteria.

All lenses received at COLTS Laboratories are quarantined for a 24 hour conditioning period in ambient laboratory conditions before testing can begin.

The customer also may wish to make a note of the date the lens samples were produced to assist them in comparing lenses produced over time.

Product samples will be discarded 21 days after test completion unless there is a request for return of the same.

In tests involving cloths, towelettes, cleaners and dyes, COLTS Laboratories will supply standard lenses. The number of lenses listed in the price list also includes the number of cloths, or towelettes to be used during the test.

Sample lenses are placed onto a tray. A sand-like media of Alundum® is placed over the lenses. The tray is mounted on a slide, which allows the tray to quickly oscillate back and forth for 600 cycles. The test is an attempt to replicate normal abrasion to the front of the sample lens. This test is similar to the ASTM D1044 - 82 test standard. A control lens is always included in the tray for comparison purposes. Reference: ASTM F735-94, ASTM D1003, ISO CD Abrasion Draft 15258. Three plano lenses with a 5.00D to a 7.00D base curve for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration. Flatter curves can be tested but are outside ISO/CD 15258. Cotton Cloth Rub Durability

This test is a determination of effects caused to a thin film coating by rubbing the AR coated lens with a cotton cloth for a prescribed number of cycles. Test lenses are inspected throughout the process and the report is based on subjective inspection against standards of 1 through 5, where 5 equals no effects. Finished lenses with a convex base curve of 6D ±.5D or alternatively, 4D ±.5D are acceptable.

Eraser

In this abrasion test the sample lenses are mounted in an abrader using a standard eraser. The eraser device is set at a 2.25 pound (10 Newton) load and cycled back and forth a distance of about 20mm to 30mm for 20 strokes depending on the level of abrasion desired. This test is similar to MIL-E-12397A. The test is an attempt to replicate normal abrasion to the front of the lens. Reference: ISO/CD Abrasion Draft 15258. Lenses with a 5.00D to a 7.00D base curve for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration. This is a subjective evaluation and any power can be used, although plano is preferred.

Taber

This test method describes a procedure for estimating the resistance of transparent plastic and glass materials to one kind of surface abrasion by measurement of it optical effects. Abrasive damage is judged by that percentage of tranmitted light which, in passing through the abraded track, deviates from the incident beam by forward scattering.

Tumble

In this abrasion test the sample lenses are placed into a barrel approximately 9" (28cm) wide and 18" (44cm) in diameter. Media is placed in the barrel, which will abrade the samples in a manner that relates to about one year of actual wear after the barrel is rotated on its rollers for a period of 20 minutes. A 6 base control lens is always included in the barrel for comparison purposes. (For flatter curves, a 4 base plano control is used, but is outside ISO requirements.) Reference: ISO/CD 15258 Abrasion Committee Draft .Six (6) plano lenses with a 6.00D to a 6.50D base curve for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration. Subjective evaluation is also available with no base Base Curve/Power restrictions for a 15% additional charge.





Tumble-Concave Side

In this abrasion test the sample lenses are placed into a barrel approximately 9” (28cm) wide and 18” (44cm) in diameter. Media is placed in the barrel, which will abrade the samples on the concave side of the lens. A 50 mm diameter, plano 6 base control lens is always included in the barrel for comparison purposes.(For flatter curves a 4 base plano control lens is used but is outside ISO requirements.) Six (6) plano lenses with a 6.00D to a 6.50D base curve for each lens type must be supplied in 50mm round lens edge configuration. Subjective evaluation is also available with no base Base Curve/Power restrictions for a 15% additional charge.






Adhesion & Simulated Exposure

AR Craze/Heal

In this test lenses are subjected to incremental increases in dry heat for 15 minute intervals. Lenses are immediate;y inspected for crazing as they come out of the oven. The lenses are then left out in ambient conditions for a period and inspected again. The crazing effect seen on some AR coatings will disappear ("heal") during this time and some will not. Any type, power and base curve of finished lenses can be used for this test. Ten (10) lenses are required.

AR Environmental Durability (QUV)

In this 5 day environmental test, lens samples are placed in the QUV instrument for a period, alternating from between UV, heat, and then a period of moisture. The lens sample is then inspected for damage including crazing and delamination of coating. This complete inspection is done once per day for 5 days. Ten (10) lenses with a varying power (i.e., -2.25D, -.50D, +2.50D, etc.) for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration. Both sides are evaluated.

SQ 10 Any

Boiling Salt Water

This is a test to assess the robustness of a lens coating. The lens is boiled in a solution of salt and water for 15 minutes. Any effects are graded and recorded by digital photography. Lenses of any power and base curve may be supplied. Any lens edge configuration is acceptable.

Boiling Salt Water-AR

This is a test to assess the robustness of an AR lens coating. The lens is boiled in a special solution of two different salts and water with intermittent rinses in de-ionized water. The lens is placed in these solutions 6 times and inspected for effects following each cycle. Any effects are graded and recorded by digital photography. Any lens edge configuration or base curve is acceptable.

Boiling Water

This test is used to simulate the tinting of a lens. The lens is boiled in deionized water for 15min, the lenses are then inspected for defects.





Chemical Resistance

The average dresswear lens may come in contact with chemicals common to the household. This is a test which attempts to replicate this event. Six (6) lenses must be supplied. Two (2) chemicals can be tested per lens. Please specify the four (4) chemicals you want tested from the following list. ACETONE, ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL, HAIR SPRAY, WINDEX, BLEACH, SALT WATER, METHANOL, FORMULA 409 and CLEANING AMMONIA.

Contact Angle

This test is an attempt to accurately measure the “wetability” of the convex surface of a lens. The angle created between the lens surface and a droplet of water illustrates the hydrophobic coatings ability to repel the water.

In this adhesion test a series of fine cuts are made using a razor-like device across and into the front surface of the test lens. This is done again at a 90-degree angle to the first series of cuts. Tape is placed firmly on the crosshatched area and quickly pulled off. The sample is then subjected to inspection of the coating along the edges of the cuts. The test is an attempt to determine effects on adhesion of a coating to the test lens. Lenses with base curves of approximately 4.50D, 6.50D or 8.50D for each lens type can be supplied in any lens edge configuration.

In this adhesion test lens samples are placed in a 95% RH environmental oven for a period of 8 hours, every day for three days at a temperature of 65 degrees C. The test lenses are inspected following each 8 hour cycle. Both sides of the lenses are ranked for crazing and delimitation effects. The test is an attempt to replicate normal environmental affects on adhesion of a coating to the sample lens.





Cycle Humidity Oven-Convex Side

In this 3 day adhesion test lens samples are placed in a 95% RH environmental oven for a period of 8 hours, every day for three days at a temperature of 65 degrees C. The test lenses are inspected following each 8 hour cycle. The test is an attempt to replicate normal environmental affects on adhesion of a coating to the sample lens and has been correlated to actual wear.

In this 3 day adhesion test coated lenses are submitted to both a crosshatch test and the cycle humidity test. Deionized Water Soak

This is an environmental test to assess the robustness of a lens coating. The lens is soaked in deionized water and inspected for flaws.





Dry Heat

In this environmental test samples are submitted to three days at 8 hours of 180-degree F dry heat. This test is an attempt to simulate dashboard conditions.




DQ 3 AnySQ 10 Any

Ease of Cleaning

This test is one of a series of tests designed to help determine the cleanability of a lens. Using abrasion caused by subjecting a lens surface to 100 cycles of a linear wiping action, cleanability is measured by applying a piece of tape to the lens surface in a prescribed manner and determining the force required to remove the tape from the lens. There is as yet no base line for comparison for this test so it is suggested that a known lens type be submitted with the test lenses to allow comparative information. Plano lenses should be supplied, having a base curve of from 5.00 to 7.00 diopters.

The environmental test subjects the lenses to alternate humidity and UV/heat cycles for a period and includes a specified 'wet cloth rubbing' prior to the cycling in the QUV Accelerated Weathering chamber.

Frame/Lens Strain

This environmental test attempts to duplicate the effects of a lens mounted in a metal frame, under pressure, in changing climatic conditions. A slightly oversized lens is mounted in a metal frame and subjected to a three-day cycle humidity test. The lenses are inspected after each 8hr cycle for defects.

Heat/Cold

In the natural environment, changes in temperature are normal. This test is an attempt to replicate that environmental condition. Samples are exposed to hot “dashboard” conditions and then slowly allowed to change to frigid conditions all in a dry environment.

Lifetime Properties

This test is one of a series of tests designed to help determine the long term lifetime of a lens surface. Abrasion is caused by subjecting the lens surface to a series of strokes of a standardized linear wiping action. Measurement is accomplished by use of affixing a tape to the surface after a number of cycles and determining the force required to remove the tape from the surface. There is as yet no base line for comparison for this test so it is suggested that a known lens type be submitted with the test lenses to allow comparative information. Plano lenses should be supplied, having a base curve of from 5.00 to 7.00 diopters.

Mechanized Ink Removal

This test is designed for AR coated lenses. It employs the work of the adhesion test and the cloth rub durability test to quantify the amount of effort it would take to clean an AR coated lens. From this test, haze, luminous transmittance, and the work of adhesion values would be obtained prior to starting the test and through the cleaning process simulated by removing permanent ink from the lens surface. This test requires plano lenses.

These tests take place in our outdoor location in Florida where lenses are placed on stationary racks.The racks are angled at 45 degrees. Time on the rack is 30 days. Lenses may be any power, style or type. Report will be based on subjective analysis. Inspection photos to be included.

These tests take place in our outdoor location in Florida where lenses are placed on stationary racks.The racks are angled at 45 degrees. Haze and spectrophotometer measurements are taken weekly. Time on the rack is 30 days. Lenses will be plano.





Photosensitive Activation Rate

This test is to determine the transmittance change when darkened in a device that creates artificial sunlight in a new instrument designed to measure the lens in an irradiated state as it darkens. This is the only instrument known at this time to be able to complete photochromic testing against ISO 8980-3 and does very well in the activation area of test requirements. Results are plotted and reported graphically together with the measured data.




DQ 4 Plano

Photosensitive Deactivation Rate

This test is to determine the transmittance change when darkened in a device that creates artificial sunlight in a new instrument designed to measure the lens from an irradiated state as it fades. This is the only instrument known at this time to be able to complete photochromic testing against ISO 8980-3 and does very well in the deactivation area of test requirements. Results are plotted and reported graphically together with the measured data.




DQ 4 Plano


Photosensitive Life

This test is to determine the life expectancy of a photosensitive lens using a QUV accelerated weathering instrument together with synthetic sunlight instrument. Measurements are determined in the activated state daily for ten days. This test is an indication of life and results may not necessarily be statistically significant. The UVA lamps in the QUV, used in this test are not the same as natural solar transmittance and most likely will not yield the same color shift over the course of the test as experienced in actual wear. A constant temperature is maintained during the test. The instrument that creates artificial sunlight is designed to measure the lens in an irradiated state as it ages. This is the only instrument known at this time to be able to complete photochromic testing against ISO 8980-3 and does very well in the area of aging test requirements. Results are plotted and reported graphically together with the measured data.

This test is to determine the transmittance change when darkened in a device that creates artificial sunlight in a new instrument designed to measure the lens in an irradiated state as the temperature is changed. This is the only instrument known at this time to be able to complete photochromic testing against ISO 8980-3 and does very well in the temperature dependence area of test requirements. Results are plotted and reported graphically together with the measured data.

Real Life Simulation Convex Surface

In this environmental test, replication of normal wear is attempted through a progression of three (3) tests: Lifetime Properties Determination (AR Cleaning); Tumble Test (Abrasion/scratch abuse) and Cycle Humidity Oven/Crosshatch Adhesion. Haze and Luminous Transmittance are measured both initially and following the last in this series of tests. Results are based on a weighted average of craze, delamination, adhesion, haze gain and transmittance loss. This final COLTS' Index is plotted against the COLTS baseline data for this test. Results have proven to be reliable and repeatable. Five (5) plano lenses for each lens type must be supplied in any lens configuration. Note:(This test can be a frontside or a backside test, but not both on the same lens sample. Unless otherwise stated, the frontside (convex) will be tested.)

Results are based on a weighted average of craze, delamination, adhesion, haze gain and transmittance loss. This final COLTS' Index is plotted against the COLTS baseline data for this test. Salt Water Soak

In this environmental test sample lenses are submersed in a salt-water solution for 24 hours and inspected for effects. Any effects are graded and recorded by digital photography. Plano lenses must be supplied. Any lens edge configuration or base curve is acceptable.

Stain Release Test

This test is designed to test the robustness of the hydrophobic or top coating used in AR lenses. The test employs the application of standardized permanent ink onto the top coating and then the mechanized rubbing of a standardized cloth for a predetermined number of cycles. Haze and transmittance measurements are completed at each interval of the test. A graph is then supplied as part of the report that illustrates the number of verses the haze and transmittance information. The test requires plano lenses.




Thermal Shock

This environmental test attempts to simulate dropping a warm pair of spectacles into the snow. Test lenses are placed in an oven at 180 degrees Fahrenheit for a specific period of time and then into a freezer at 0 degrees Fahrenheit for the same period. Lenses are then cosmetically inspected for damage. Lenses with a varying power of -2.50D and +2.50D or several base curves of approximately 4.50D, 6.50Dor 8.50D for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.

UV Resistance

The QUV Accelerated Weathering Tester is recognized in ASTM, ISO, ANSI, SAE, DIN, JIS, BS and other standards groups. This test attempts to replicate outdoor weathering conditions on an accelerated basis using lighting that closely simulates the UV in sunlight. This test is a 72 hour test. Five plano lenses must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.






Work of Adhesion

This test is designed to help determine the cleanability of a lens. A piece of tape is attached to a clean lens and then removed with a force gauge to determine the force necessary to remove the tape. Plano lenses are used for this test and the test may also be used on uncoated and hard coated lenses. There is as yet no base line for comparison for this test so it is suggested that a known lens type be submitted with the test lenses to allow comparative information. Plano lenses should be supplied, having a base curve of from 5.00 to 7.00 diopters.

A chemical mixture that replicates perspiration provides the basis for a test of frame components to assure that there is no spotting or color change or corrosion, surface degradation or separation at the conclusion of the test as described in ISO 12870.

Cosmetic & Mechanical Inspection

A complete inspection of lenses using common industrial and laboratory techniques within ISO recommendations are used to report findings regarding: sphere power, front surface power, cylinder power, diameter, center thickness, edge thickness, pits, scratches, bubbles, flow lines, stress, unidentified particulate, edge cracks etc. Findings relate to both the coating and the lens underneath the coating This is a COLTS Laboratories Procedure based on ANSI Z80 recommendations and on what is now being used in the industry. A minimum of twenty (20) lenses of each lens type must be supplied in any power, base curve and edge configuration The customer may wish to include two (2) lens types to allow comparison when results are received. The customer should know market acceptance of one (1) of the two (2) lens types. This will allow for a good comparative base.

Static Load Test

This is an ISO test (ISO 14889 - Fundamental Requirements for Uncut Finished Spectacles). The objective of the test is to slowly lower a large mass onto a lens surface equaling a force of 100Newtons (about 22 pounds) for a period of 10 seconds and then remove the load to determine if the lens will break, crack or flex toward the eye enough to cause contact. Lenses should be finished and can be supplied in any power and diameter or edge configuration.

Variable Height Impact

This test is an extension of the FDA test. The equipment used has the capability of releasing a ball at up to 2000 inches equivalent to impact the lens. Using the Bruceton technique, the residual strength (that strength over and above what the FDA requires) of the lens can be determined. Twelve (12) or fifty-five (55) lenses must be supplied, depending on which test is selected. We can impact both uncut and edged samples. If test samples are to be edged we request that the customer produces the edged samples. If samples are to be edged we suggest a 54mm, S10 shape, with a safety bevel.






Lens Tinting & Dying

Tint Color Hue

Black dye is used to determine if a lens will absorb dye in a manner that will make the color hue in the lens inconsistent across the surface of the lens. A control lens is always included for comparison purposes. Five plano lenses for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.

Tint Consistency

BPI Black dye is used to determine if the lens will absorb dye in a manner that will make the transmittance in the lens inconsistent across the surface of the lens. This is a subjective test to determine what is more commonly referred too as 'blotching'. Additionally 3 transmission readings are taken across the surface of the lens to create a Max/Min chart quantifying the % transmission consistency across the lens surface. A control lens is always included for comparison purposes if blotching is observed. Five finished lenses for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.





Tint Rate

This test allows specific dye to be absorbed for a fixed amount of time. The transmittance is then measured and compared to the control lens. This test is primarily used for determining the hardness of a hard resin lens. Five plano lenses for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.





Tint/Color Fade - QUV

In this environmental test, lens samples are tinted to 30% transmittance using red, yellow, green or black dye and then placed in the QUV instrument for a period, alternating from between UV, heat, and then a period of moisture. The lens sample is then inspected for change in color or fade in color due to UV. Four (4) plano lenses for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.






Other Lens Treatments

Anti-Fog

This test is designed to replicate moving from cold to warm areas while wearing lenses. Test lenses are subjected to ambient conditions for a period of time and then moved over 50°C water vapor conditions in which there is a controlled environment. The time for the lens to fog is measured. Results are reported as the number of seconds to reach the maximum fogging allowed under ASTM and EN166 requirements.

Anti-Static

This test attempts to replicate the measure of the ability of a lens to build-up static on the surface of a lens. An Electrostatic meter is used to determine the electrostatic field on a lens. The lens is then rubbed for 20 cycles and measured again for electrostatic field. The result is a measurement of the relative anti-static property of the lens compared to a control lens provided by COLTS. There is as yet no base line for comparison for this test so it is suggested that a known lens type be submitted with the test lenses to allow comparative information.

This optical test will determine the percent of haze in a lens that may cause a decrease in visibility to the wearer. Clarity

This optical test will determine the level of clarity in a lens. The lens is placed in a BYK Gardner Hazegard Plus through which the dispersion of light can be measured. Clarity is the measurement of narrow angle light scattering (angles less than 2.5 degrees). Plano lenses for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.






Hard Coating Thickness

This test will determine the thickness of an abrasion resistant coating on a lens. All samples are to be plano but “absolute” measurement requires an additional sample of the same sample without the coating. The index of the coating must also be supplied for absolute measurements.

Luminous Transmittance

A BYK Gardner HazeGard Plus is used to measure average luminous transmittance. Plano lenses for each lens type must be supplied in any edge configuration.





Polarized Luminous Transmittance Ratio

This test aligns the sample lens with the standard polarized film in a spectrophotometer at 90° to each other. Extinction is measured as a transmittance function yielding efficiency of the lens. Lenses tested should be Plano and in any lens edge configuration. Price is for lenses of the same product.





Polarized Lens Efficiency

This test is used by the polarized film industry. Transmission is measured with 2 lenses where the polarized film axis are running parallel. This value is Tmax. The polarized film axis are then crossed and transmission is measured to obtain Tmin. Pe is then calculated.





Polarized Lens 0°-180° Alignment Accuracy

This test aligns the sample lens with the notched polarized film standard to obtain luminous transmittance at 90° to each other. The polarized sample lens notches are compared to the standard to obtain the accuracy in degrees (±3° or less).






Spectral Analysis

This spectrophotometer test can yield nearly all of the information typically required to meet transmittance requirements in standards such as ISO 8980-3, CEN 94 and the Australian standards as well as ANSI 80.3. Spectral, Luminous and Mean Reflectance

A spectrophotometer is used to measure the characteristics of a sample with AR coating. The X, Y, Z tristimulus values shall be used to calculate the Y, x and y Chromaticity Coordinates. ISO /WD 8980-18 are the referenced document. Calculation follows that standard specified by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) established in 1931. Plano samples for each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration however, convex curves are prefered.





Surface Curve Power

The Focovision SRI is used to determine the surface curve of a sample. Accuracy is ±0.02 diopters. There are no restrictions for this test regarding type of lenses, shape, size or power.

Distortion - Ann Arbor Tester

An Ann Arbor distortion tester is used to evaluate the amount of distortion present in the lens. Photographs of typical levels of distortion are provided. Plano samples are preferred for this test.

UV Transmittance

A spectrophotometer is used to measure the ultraviolet transmittance of a lens. Attenuation of UVA and UVB are completed in accordance with the ANSI 290nm, 315nm and 380nm definition and calculation of areas under the curve for percent attenuation of each. Plano samples of each lens type must be supplied and can be in any lens edge configuration.





Yellowness Index

A spectrophotometer is used to measure the yellowness of a sample. This is based on CIE 1925 and 1931 calculating the degree where hue leaves white or achromatic color towards yellow. As a positive value, it moves in the yellow direction. Plano samples of each lens type must be supplied in any lens edge configuration.

Cleaner Lubricity

A cleaner must clean but also provide some protection from abrasion that can be caused by the cloth being used to wipe the cleaner from the lens. This is a 2000 rub test using a standard technical grade pure cotton cloth to rub an AR lens. The sample cleaner is sprayed on the lens in a measured quantity after a specific number of cycles throughout the test. Actual scratches are counted periodically during the test and recorded. Based on the number of scratches counted the score may be from "0" to "5" where 5 is pristine and 0 is more than 20 scratches. A quantity of 16 oz. is required for this test. There will also be a charge of our cost for the AR coated lenses used.

Cleaning Cloth Abrasion

Dry cleaning cloths typically used to clean AR coated lenses are subjected to a dry 4000 cycle mechanical rubbing to replicate the typical action seen in normal use. It is best to perform several tests to compare results. Four (4) standard control lenses are used to determine an average in each case. Dry Cloth for Aggressive Cleaning

Dry cleaning cloths typically used to clean AR coated lenses are subjected to a number of strokes across soft chalk. This is done to determine the amount of chalk by weight is removed from the chalk block, This is not a measurement of "abrasion" and illustrates how aggressive the cleaning will be under dry conditions.

Three manufacturers coated lenses are chosen for this test (5 lenses from each for the standard test). Dye is mixed following dye manufacturer’s instructions and lenses are dyed to sunglass shades. Dye, sent to COLTS Laboratories will be applied as specified in the dye manufacturer’s product instructions. A spectrophotometer is used to accurately measure the ultraviolet transmittance of the dyed lens. Attenuation of UVA and UVB are completed in accordance with the ANSI 290nm, 315nm and 380nm definition and calculation of areas under the curve for percent attenuation of each.





UV Dye Transmittance

UV Dye, UV Transmittance and Block - This test is designed to measure the amount of reduction in UVA and UVB passing through a lens after the lens has been dyed with UV dye. Dye, sent to COLTS Laboratories will be applied as specified in the dye manufacturer’s product instructions. A spectrophotometer is used to accurately measure the ultraviolet transmittance of the dyed lens. This test is an attempt to create the abrasion that a lens may see in transit. A mechanized method of rubbing is completed between the standard lens and the packaging material (attached to the envelope or box). Actual scratches are counted under magnification to determine results.

MCEPS Temperature

The eyewear assemblies shall be exposed for 72 hours at 160°F +3°F and for 72 hours at -60°F +3°F. Immediately following each exposure, all moveable parts (to include any fasteners, hinges, and any means of adjustment) shall be manually operated. Trigger finger and Arctic mittens shall be worn during manual operation conducted after exposure to -60°F +3oF. Inability to operate moving parts, or the presence of breaks and cracks, shall constitute a failure. Following each exposure, once samples have returned to ambient conditions, the samples shall also be examined for visible signs of distortion or discoloration. If a visual assessment is inconclusive, the exposed lenses shall be tested for conformance to optical distortion and luminous transmittance requirements, and if these tests are inconclusive, testing shall be conducted for conformance to the optical requirements of ANSI Z87.1. If the product fails any optical test, testing may be stopped and the failure recorded. Otherwise, the exposed lenses shall next be tested for ballistic impact characteristics.

MCEPS Abrasion

The haze and luminous transmittance of the coated lenses shall be determined before and after the abrasion test. The abrasion test shall be performed by rubbing the front surface of the lens with a standardized eraser, held approximately normal to the lens. The eraser is rubbed across the surface of the coated lens for 20 cycles with a force of 2.0 to 2.5 pounds applied. After the rubbing has been completed, the lens is thoroughly cleaned using a mild detergent and distilled water followed by drying with a soft cloth or lens tissue. The percent haze gain is the difference between the haze readings taken before and after the abrasion test.

MCEPS System Weight

The weight of the Class 1 MCEPS (spectacles and prescription lens carrier only) shall not exceed 1.7 ounces for the largest sized item. The weight of the carrying case for Class 1 shall not exceed five (5) ounces. MCEPS Flammability

Flammability for the eyewear shall be in accordance with ANSI Z87.1. This shall include any plastic components, such as buckles, that are present on the Class 2 and Class 3 retention straps. Textile components (not covered by ANSI Z87.1) of the Class 2 and Class 3 eyewear assemblies, to include the retention strap, shall be flame resistant. Five samples of each textile component shall be exposed to a vertical flame.

MCEPS Adhesion

After completing the humidity test the samples shall be dried with a cotton cloth and then subjected to the adhesion test. A test tape, with an adhesion rating of 40 ounces per 2.5 cm of width, is applied to the front surface of the lens. The area covered is 13 square centimeters. To ensure good contact, rub the area firmly with an eraser. Within 90 + 30 seconds of application, the tape is rapidly but smoothly removed by pulling it back upon itself at an angle as close to 180 degrees as possible. The area to which the tape was applied is inspected for removal of coating.

For lens components, the front surface of the lens is required to be completely resistant to all chemicals specified. After the 24 hour exposure, samples are visually inspected, tested for optical distortion and ballistics.

The spectral transmittance is measured with the use of a spectrophotometer from 380 nanometers (nm) to 780 nm in increments of two (2) nm or less. The chromaticity coordinates are then calculated.

This laminar oven is capable of long service at the required 65°C for the Cycle Humidity Tests. The oven is capable of up to 250°C and has a 5 cubic feet, all stainless interior. Temperature uniformity throughout the interior is ±0.9°C at 150°C. A two (2) year warranty is included. The oven is delivered with 2 Desiccators and 500 cc's of Potassium Sulfate.
