LE NOTIZIE
DI TREVOR Before we get down
to business, I have an important task for
everyone to complete. Stop what you’re doing, take out a pen and mark Thursday 23rd August in your calendar as our Parent Twilight Forum from 6.00-8.00pm. A flyer is attached to this newsletter with more information about the sessions that will run on this night.
This is the second time we have run an event like this, our first one back in 2016 was highly successful. In an informal and lively atmosphere, this forum will provide a platform for the presentation of some key improvement areas at BSPS this year and beyond.
Just when you thought we are all set for term 3, we have a couple of new faces joining our school. Jessica Saracino is working on Thursdays in 3/4 back filling for Ivana, Claire Murphy is working part time in Foundation on Thursdays and Cameron Tranter is joining us casually supporting students in the 5/6 area. Please join me in welcoming Jessica, Claire and Cameron to our school.
Some of the kids can barely contain their excitement with the installation of our new basketball ring being finalised on Wednesday. Unfortunately the old ring had to be removed due to it not being OH&S compliant and, in its absence, we have had some very frustrated students. Some of the profits from our Colour Run back in term one have allowed us to purchase and install a brand new basketball ring, so everyone’s persistence has paid off. It’s great to see a tangible result from our fundraising efforts.
This week Steffie, Elke, Sarah and myself spent two days attending the Leading Professional Learning Communities course. This course consists of eight modules undertaken between now and the end of the year and supports schools to implement Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). This is one of the actions outlined in our Annual Implementation Plan and supported by the introduction of our Literacy, Numeracy and Engagement and Wellbeing PLCs. The time over the two days allowed us to network with other schools and get a picture of where our school sits. This was
affirming for us, with many of the ideas discussed already aligning with our structures here at BSPS
Our second round of Student Led Conferences proved to be a positive beginning to the term. One of the key improvement strategies in our new strategic plan is to embed learner agency and student voice. Our aim for our students is for them to be actively involved in their own learning rather than learning ‘happening to them’. We are so proud of our kids and how maturely they’ve taken on this challenge. Even our Foundation students shared their goals with a passion and excitement far beyond their age! Please note our teachers are always available for those chats, both formally and informally and regularly meet with parents during the term.
Please remember that our school yard is supervised from 8.45am – 9.00am in the morning and then from 3.30pm – 3.45pm in the afternoon. Any child in the yard outside of these times will be sent to Out of School Hours Care (OSHC). Recently we have had children arriving as early as 8am and as there is no supervision at this time this is a serious safety concern.
Finally this week, many of you have been asking for some photos from the Winter Solstice festival. The following link should take you to a selection of snaps from the evening: https://bit.ly/2Osyc5X Thanks to our resident photographer, Robert Wagner, for capturing the highlights of a wonderful evening.
Have a wonderful fortnight,
Trevor.
PArEnt OPiniOn SurvEyThe Department of Education and Training have released the 2018 Parent Opinion Survey. This survey is delivered to a random sample of parents from every Victorian school. Approximately 90 families have been selected from BSPS and will receive a letter and invitation to complete the survey online. This feedback is important and helps us work on ways to improve our service.
SCHOOl POliCiES Attached with this weeks newsletter are some school policies for community comment.

Accountability and initiative in the 5&6 area!
During our social and emotional learning sessions, we have spoken about accountability and initiative. We have also come up with six behavior expectations that we all want to put in place in the 5&6 area.
These are:
Being accountable for our own learning and actions
 Actively listening
Being self-aware and considering our effect on others
 Cleaning up after ourselves
 Caring for class resources
Speaking and acting kindly towards others
Identificare le emozioni!
In Italian literacy we have been learning to identify emotions in images, inferring the meaning and the story behind an image and making connections between information in print and images. It is a great opportunity to explore our emotions too! Can you guess our emotions? Choose from: allegria, amore, calma, rabbia, tristezza, paura!

Our 3/4 students have been really busy learning Angoli! They are having lots of fun with them and they are very proud of their work. Ottimo lavoro ragazzi!
In PE this term we will be focusing on Athletics, in particular, 100m & 200m sprints, shot put, discus, long jump, triple jump, high jump and 1500m races.
All children in Grade 3-6 will be participating in a combined 3-6 Mini Athletics Carnival at BSPS which will be held on the Friday the 24th of August.
This carnivale will help to determine the children that will be heading off to the Division Athletics Carnival in Week 7.
Most of the trials will be held on the day, with some being held during PE and class time, so please make sure your child is wearing appropriate shoes for running everyday.
Those children who will not have turned 9 by the end of this year will not be able to participate in the Division Carnival, but WILL be able to have a fun time at the BSPS Mini Athletics Carnival, getting in plenty of practice for next year!
BSPS NOTICES
SCHOOl COunCil rEPOrtSchool Council met on Tuesday July 31 with a very full agenda!
The Council endorsed the school’s Strategic Plan for the period covering 2018 and 2021, as well as the Annual Implementation plan for the coming year. If you’re interested in learning more, the upcoming parent seminar is a great opportunity to hear what’s ahead. Council also endorsed the upcoming Italian camp.
The Community & Fundraising committee reflected on the success of June’s Winter Solstice and shared plans for Term 3 including the Trivia Night and Father’s Day preparations. We also agreed a new budgeting approach that will increase the transparency of how we spend the funds that we raise. A first example is the new basketball ring being installed this week!
The Buildings and Ground Committee shared the great work they’re doing on a Masterplan to best use the space that we have, and potentially increase our use of the adjacent parkland, as the school grows.
And finally, following our recent visit from Minister Merlino, we finalized a follow-up letter to him outlining some additional funding requirements that help the school in years to come.
