Senior quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels, a graduate transfer from Wash-ington, completed 34-of-50 passes for a school record 537 yards and five touchdowns against the Rainbow Warriors. His five touchdowns are tied for the second-most in a single-game in CSU history. Carta-Samuels threw for 422 yards in the second half, which would be the sixth-most in a game in program history on its own.

Wide receiver Preston Williams, a junior that transferred from Tennessee during the 2016 season, had nine receptions for 188 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Williams had 127 yards in the second half, including a 69-yard reception down the left sideline where he showed off his speed, agility and strength all in one sitting.

In total, 17 players appeared in their first game as a Ram on Aug. 25:- Transfers: 6 (three starters: Carta-Samuels, P. Williams, V.J. Banks)- True freshmen: 8 (two starters: Rashad Ajayi, Devin Phillips; plus long snapper Ross Reiter)- Redshirt freshmen: 3 (one starter: Barry Wesley)

RAMS IN AUGUSTThe Rams are 8-3 all-time in August. CSU won its first six August contests, beginning with a 32-24 victory over Arkansas State on Aug. 31, 1991.Some of CSU’s most memorable wins have occured in August. RAMS IN ELITE COMPANY AT ANNUAL AWARDS SHOWColorado State is one of just 10 college football programs to have had a fi-nalist for a major national award, and been represented at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, in at least three of the last four years. WR Michael Gallup was a finalist for the 2017 Biletnikoff Award, presented on Dec. 7. WR Rashard Higgins was also a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award in 2014, and P Hayden Hunt was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award in 2015. The Rams are the only school from a non-Power 5 conference to be repre-sented at the College Football Awards 3 of the last 4 years: 4 — Alabama, Auburn, Utah3 — Clemson, Colorado State, Iowa, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Stanford, Texas

BOBO GUIDING OFFENSE TO NEW HEIGHTSCSU’s offense has flourished during head coach Mike Bobo’s three sea-sons in Fort Collins. In all three seasons, the Rams have posted numbers that rank in the top 10 in most total yards, yards per game, yards per play, first downs, rushing yards, passing yards, total points and points per game.

Two Rams seniors, RB Izzy Matthews and WR Olabisi Johnson, have had significant roles during all three of Bobo’s seasons. Matthews has totaled 1,937 yards on the ground since 2015, including four 100-yard games, and is tied for fourth in program history with 26 rushing TDs. Johnson has 1,223 career receiving yards and owns the program’s top single-game receiving effort with 265 yards in the 2016 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl against Idaho.

Other notable offensive players to play under Bobo at CSU:

    • WR Michael Gallup -- Biletnikoff Award finalist and consensus All-American in 2017.• QB Nick Stevens -- First-Team All-MW in 2017; CSU’s second all-time leading passer.• RB Dalyn Dawkins -- Second-Team All-MW in 2017, school’s third all-time leading rusher.• WR Rashard Higgins -- First-Team All-MW in 2015; entering his third season with the Cleveland Browns.• All-conference offensive linemen Jake Bennett, Zack Golditch, Trae Moxley and Fred Zerblis.

GOING FOR 500 (AND 600)CSU posted 653 yards in its season opener against Hawai’i on Aug. 25. It was the most yards that a Rams team has had under fourth-year head coach Mike Bobo and the fifth-most in a single game in program history. It also further illustrated a trend that Bobo has set since taking charge of the program in 2015.

CSU eclipsed 500 yards of total offense seven times in 2017, and reached 600-plus yards a school-record four times. Under Coach Bobo, the Rams have exceeded 500 yards of total offense 17 times (4 in 2015, 5 in 2016, 7 in 2017, 1 in 2018).

PRENTICE THE NATION’S HIGH-EST-GRADED FULLBACKRedshirt sophomore Adam Prentice was the highest-graded fullback in the FBS in 2017, according to Pro Football Focus. He rated at an 82.5 for the season -- the highest rating of any returning Ram.

Prentice is also known for his off-the-field efforts. He is on the 2018 Wuerffel Trophy watch list and is a nominee for the 2018 Allstate Good Works Team.

WR U?The Colorado State football team has groomed several incredible talents at the wide receiver position over the last five years. Rashard Higgins, a fifth-round draft selection of the Cleveland Browns in 2016, set multiple program records during his three seasons at CSU. Higgins was a Biletnikoff Award finalist and consensus All-American in 2014 following a season where he totaled 1,750 yards receiving and 17 touchdowns. Michael Gallup earned the same national accolades last season, producing 1,413 yards on a school-record 100 catches. Gallup was a third-round draft choice by the Cowboys this year, and is competing to be a starter in year one.

Since 2014, seven different Rams receivers have posted at least one 100-yard receiving outing -- Higgins, Gallup, Joe Hansley, Charles Lovett, Elroy Masters, Jr., Olabisi Johnson and Preston

    Williams.

A few prominent current Rams are looking like they will continue the tradition of stellar wide receiver play in Fort Collins, under the tutelage of head coach Mike Bobo and wide receivers coach Alvis Whitted, himself a nine-year NFL veteran. Johnson and Williams were included among Lance Zierlein’s (NFL.com) top-10 wide recevers to watch going into this season.

NEW STAFF ADDITIONS FOR 2018The Rams added six new full-time assistant coaches into the fold before spring ball started, including three new coordinators. The defense will be led by defensive coordinator John Jancek, who brings 10 years of experi-ence as a defensive coordinator at the FBS level, most recently a three-year stint at Tennessee. Four other new assistant coaches join Jancek on that side of the ball, including special teams coordinator and linebackers coach Chase Gibson. Dave Johnson was also added to the staff to be the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. The six new full-time assis-tant coaches boast over 100 years of combined experience on Division I coaching staffs.

GREEN AND GLOBAL - SERVICE AND LEARNING EXPERIENCE IN JAMAICA• 12 student-athletes and four staff members traveled to Petersfield,

Jamaica from May 17-27.• The athletes experienced cultural immersion, social action and com-

munity-based learning. Students were hosted by local families, with 2-4 students per home.

    • Participating football players: Adam Prentice and Barry Wesley.• CSU’s student-athletes have seen their opportunities expand dramati-

cally in recent years. The most visible expansion of the student-athlete experience has come in the way of investments in nutrition, facilities and academic support to further fulfill the department’s mission to Educate, Engage and Excel.

    • The trip was organized by Dr. Albert Bimper, CSU’s senior associate athletic director for diversity and inclusion.

    • Bimper was a 2006 CSU graduate and four-year starting center on the football team (2002-05).

    COLORADO STATE FOOTBALL

STATE PRIDEThere are 38 players on the Rams roster who are Colorado natives. This includes 15 athletes that are listed on the team’s first depth chart of the year, and six projected starters:

WR Olabisi Johnson -- Lakewood, Colo. (Bear Creek)LT Barry Wesley -- Morrison, Colo. (Bear Creek) RDE Richard King -- Aurora, Colo. (Rangeview)SLB Tre Thomas -- Denver, Colo. (Overland)WLB Max McDonald -- Fort Collins, Colo. (Rocky Mountain)K Wyatt Bryan -- Larkspur, Colo. (Douglas County)

MORE EXPERIENCED THAN YOU THINKOne area of skepticism that has surrounded the Rams entering the 2018 season is a perceived lack of experience. The thought is not completely unfound-ed -- the Rams did lose 13 starters from last year’s squad (seven on offense, five on defense and one spe-cialist). What is not often accurately accounted for is the fact that many of the Rams’ 2017 reserves saw a significant amount of playing time.

For example, while there are technically only two starters returning on the offensive line, the 10 players listed on the o-line two-deep have accumulated 112 games of experiene at the FBS level.

Another example: CSU did lose its all-everything receiver in Michael Gallup and fellow WR Detrich Clark. However, Olabisi Johnson has played 38 career games, Warren Jackson played in every game as a true freshman last year and Preston Williams has 12 games of experience in the SEC while at Tennessee in 2015-16.

CSU also benefits from plugging three graduate transfers into its two-deep entering the Hawai’i contest. Start-ing quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels has appeared in 25 career games, including the 2017 Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl against Alabama. Cornerback V.J. Banks played in 36 games at Rice from 2014-17, including 13 starts. T.J. Roundtree, a transfer from Louisville, will help bolster the offensive line with 18 career games played at the FBS level.

GOING BOWLINGFor the 17th time in school history and fifth year in a row, the Rams went bowling in 2017, facing Marshall in the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. It marked the first time CSU qualified for a bowl game in five consecutive seasons since 1999-2003. All-time, CSU has played in 17 bowl games, including 16 since 1990. The Rams finished with a 7-6 record for the third consecutive year, and have now posted winning records in five straight seasons.

CSU SETS TOP ATTENDANCE MARKSColorado State set single-season records for total home attendance (192,369) and per game average (32,062) last season, its first in its new on-campus football stadium. CSU saw its total attendance increase 16.2 percent from 2016 - the eighth-highest per-game attendance increase in the FBS for 2017. Other attendance facts:• Second year in a row with an increase in attendance -- the seventh-highest two-year per-game attendance in-crease among all FBS schools (7,145; 28.7%) - 149,500/24,917 in 2015 - 165,598/27,600 in 2016 - 192,369/32,062 in 2017• One of only two MW schools (San Diego State) to experience an attendance increase in each of the past two seasons. - Colorado State: 10.8% from 2015-16; 16.2% from 2016-17 - San Diego State: 22.6% from 2015-16; 5.5% from 2016-17• Second-highest average attendance increase in MW behind Fresno State (5,139)

    COLORADO STATE FOOTBALL

THIS WEEK IN CSU HISTORY -- THE 2002 ROCKY MOUNTAIN SHOWDOWN WAS MORE THAN JUST A SPIKE TO THE BUFFS

by John Hirn, CSU Athletics Historian

Ask any CSU football fan and they will remember two key things about the 2002 version of the Rocky Mountain Showdown. The first thing they remember is that Bradlee Van Pelt broke loose for a 23-yard touchdown run, turned to Colorado defender Roderick Sneed and once he crossed the plain of the goal line, spiked the ball into Sneed’s helmet. The score ultimately won the game for the Rams and gave them their third win in four years over the great rivals from Boulder.

The other thing they remember is when Cecil Sapp, fresh from a year off after a foot injury, carried the CU defense on his back over the south goal line of Invesco Field at Mile High for the day’s first touchdown. Sapp ran all over the CU defense that day scoring two touchdowns and punishing the Buffs’ line.

Those two events during the game will always be burned into the memories of more than 70,000 people who wit-nessed them at the stadium and millions more watching the nationally televised game.

This piece of CSU history goes beyond those two memorable plays though. The Rams had beaten Virginia the week prior to the Showdown, allowing them a game of experience as they faced the No. 6 Buffs squad. It also gave junior quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt some confidence heading into the rivalry game and he showed it in his interviews with the media during the week.

Van Pelt made statements like “Is this a big game? It’s just another football game, right?” Whether he was poking fun at CU fans and players who tried to dismiss the CSU game as just another football game, or he was himself saying every game was important, Van Pelt showed more confidence in 2002 than his nervous performance in 2001.

When the Rams finally did beat the Buffs by a very close score of 19-14, it not only was the second time in two weeks they had beat a top-25 team, it was only the third time in school history they had upset a top-10 team (the Rams beat No. 10 Wyoming in 1966 and No. 6 Arizona in 1994). Beating CU propelled CSU from un-ranked to No. 19 in the nation. They remained in the top-25 polls in nine of the next 12 weeks of the season and climbing as high as 16th before an upset loss to UNLV on November 30th.

The 2002 season also marked the last conference championship season for CSU football, one in which they also beat all three rival schools along the front range. That had only been done one other time (1999) since the CU rivalry was re-established in 1983 and has not been repeated since. Van Pelt would win the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year Honors and rack up 2,892 yards of total offense. Sapp rushed for 1,601 yards during the season and finished his career with 2,642 yards and remains eighth all-time for career yards rushing at CSU. The Rams had 12 all-conference players and offensive lineman Morgan Pears was named to The Sporting News’ second-team All-America squad.

So the next time you look at the video of Van Pelt spiking that ball into Sneed’s helmet, or see Cecil Sapp barrel through the CU defense carrying players on his back, think about the 2002 season as a whole; a year that will go down as one of the greatest of all time in Rams’ history.

#ALLTIMERAMS - FAN VOTEFor nine days in June, thousands of Col-orado State football fans voted for their #AllTimeRams squad.

Players on the ballot played at CSU from 1968-2017. No current Rams or players who finished their careers prior to 1968 were included.

There was a “first team” and a “second team”, based on the results of the fan vote.

CANVAS STADIUMCanvas Stadium is the new name for Colorado State University's 41,000-ca-pacity multipurpose stadium that opened on the school's Fort Collins campus in 2017. The newly re-branded Canvas Credit Union received naming rights to the facility through a $37.7 million partnership agreement announced in April 2018. The agreement, which stands as one of the larg-est collegiate athletic venue naming agreements in history, was part of an ambitious re-branding initiative being undertaken by the previously brand-ed Public Service Credit Union, under the direction of company President and CEO Todd Marksberry.

Canvas Credit Union is a not-for-profit, state-chartered, member-owned fi-nancial cooperative that has been in business since 1938. Today, the credit union has more than $2.3 billion in assets and more than 238,000 mem-bers – and a mission to help individuals and families make better decisions and grow stronger financially. Learfield’s Rams Sports Properties and their Campus+ business brokered the agreement as part of its ongoing support for Colorado State University athletics.

The $220 million, 727,000-square-foot stadium proved immensely popular and attractive to fans in its inaugural season of 2017, and drew rave reviews from local and national media, as well national television networks that broadcast Colorado State’s games to large audiences. The Rams set an all-time attendance record with a total of 192,369 fans and a per-game aver-age of 32,062, representing a 16-percent attendance increase from 2016—eighth-highest in all of college football. Season ticket sales also reached an all-time high of 15,477, a 40-percent increase from the 2016 total of 11,054.

The return of CSU football games to campus from Hughes Stadium in 2017 brought the pageantry and celebration of Rams game days back to the heart of the university for the first time in 50 years, providing countless new engagement opportunities for the entire university. The stadium’s design embraces Colorado’s natural beauty, topography and visual connections to the Rocky Mountains from campus and ensures functionality for both game-day and non-game day usage.

The agreement with Canvas Credit Union combined with $20 million given in 2016 to name Sonny Lubick Field brings the total naming rights revenues at Colorado State to $57 million for the stadium. This compares favorably with the recently announced $69 million United Airlines Memorial Coliseum at University of Southern California and the $41 million Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium at the University of Washington. The Colorado State agreement with Canvas Credit Union is for 15 years and includes annual escalator clauses for inflation, as well as a signing bonus, in recognition of the visibility and success of the stadium.

The Rams issue a belt (pictured above) to a play-er that forces a turnover. One player is chosen after each game to keep the belt the following week.
