THE ANNIVERSARIES...

May… 1st Harold & Eleanor Mongovan 4 Yrs! 9th Steve & Marion Riley 4 Yrs!

To Violet’s astonishment, a police car pulled up to her house and her elderly grandfather got out of the backseat. The patrolman explained to Violet that her grandfather had been wandering around the city park looking rather lost before asking for help getting home. After the police officer left, Violet turned to her grandfather and said: “Grandpa! You’ve been going to that park every day for the last forty years! How could you possibly have gotten lost?” The old man smiled slyly and replied: “Oh, I wasn’t lost, exactly.” Her grandfather began to chuckle. “I just got tired of walking,” he admitted.

WORD OF THE WEEK...

Hibernaculum \hahy-ber-nak-yuh-luhm\ noun

A protective case or covering of an animal or plant bud, especially for winter use. Winter quarters, as of a hibernating animal.

EXAMPLES

The little chipmunk retreated to his hibernaculum for the winter months, waiting to emerge come spring time.

“This winter home or hibernaculum of the peach-tree borer is a thin affair, with a smooth interior, and is made of bits of frass or particles of bark fastened together with silken threads, which simply covers the borer as it rests curled up on the bark.” - Mark Vernon, Slingerland 1899

DID YOU KNOW? The word “hibernaculum” comes from the Latin hibernacula or hībernāculum, which means “winter resi-dence.” It entered the English language in the late 1600’s. The word can be used to describe a large variety of shelters used by various kinds of animals, such as bats,

marmots, snakes and bears. It can also be used when discussing the winter bud of certain aquatic plants.

THE LIBRARY CORNER...

The birds are returning for Spring,

unimpeded by the weather here in

New Hampshire.

When MBCC was first built the birds

left as the noise caused by construc-

tion scared them off, but, finally, they

realized we’re okay. Last year we even

had two pairs of wrens nesting

nearby. Other birds have started com-

ing back and, if you are very obser-

vant with eyes and ears, you may

rejoice in being a MBCC’er!

Please stop by the library to check out

our numerous books on bird identifi-

cation. One special book you will find

standing up on the table is The Book

of North American Birds, a must-read

for anyone interested in honing their

ornithology skills! In addition to this,

you will find many other books to

help you welcome back out feathered

friends!

FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS:

“SAVING MR. BANKS”

7:00pm in the Community Room

Author P.L. Travers reflects on her childhood after reluctantly meeting with Walt Disney, who seeks to adapt her Mary Poppins book for the big screen.

Saving Mr. Banks is a 2013 American-Australian-

British biographical film with elements of the

drama and comedy genres. Directed by John Lee

Hancock, the film was adapted from a screenplay

by Kelly Marcel and is centered on the

development of the 1964 Walt Disney Studios film

Mary Poppins. Saving Mr. Banks depicts Travers’

fortnight-long briefing in 1961 Los Angeles as she

is pursued by Disney in his attempts to obtain the

screen rights to her novels.

The film stars Emma Thompson as author P.L.

Travers and Tom Hanks as filmmaker Walt Disney;

it also features supporting performances from

Colin Farrell, Jason Schwartzman, Rachel Griffiths

and Kathy Baker.

Film Review:

Saving Mr. Banks tells the story of Walt Disney's battle to get the rights to make Mary Poppins

into a movie. I wasn't expecting to like this but was completely blown away. It is beautifully

put together, is hilarious in parts and very touching and emotional at others. There are some

seriously outstanding performances here. Emma Thompson plays Mrs. Travers beautifully and

Tom Hanks does a great job of playing Walt Disney - a tough role for anyone! I’m already look-

ing forward to watching this film again!

We LOVE this... The 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably coifed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today. Her husband of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it,” she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. “Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room …. just wait.” “That doesn’t have anything to do with it,” she replied. “Happiness is something you de-cide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the fur-niture is arranged, it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a deci-sion I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice; I can spend the day in bed re-

counting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do. Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away, just for this time in my life.” She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account, you withdraw from what you’ve put in. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank ac-count of memories. Thank you for your part in filling my Memory bank. I am still deposit-ing.” And with a smile, she said: “Remember the five simple rules to be happy: 1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worries. 3. Live simply. 4. Give more. 5. Expect less

FREE LIFE IN REVIEW WORKSHOP AT MEREDITH BAY COLONY CLUB!

On Thursday April 10th at 3pm The Reverend John Eaton will present a free hour-long workshop in the Bistro of Meredith Bay Colony Club that is ideal for those who are 60 plus – but is certainly appropri-ate for all adults. Many people feel that their lives have been mundane, but after review they realize that they have been filled with interesting and exciting adventures. This Workshop will help people to explore their lives and draw out those special times. Participants will not be asked to share their thoughts and discover-ies with the group but will be encouraged to share with their fami-lies. At the conclusion of the Workshop participants will have a Life History Summary that can be a gift to family members for gen-erations to come. A very special gift to those who are doing ge-nealogical research. The Reverend John Eaton is a retired United Church of Christ Pas-tor and is also a Member of Meredith Bay Colony Club. The Work-shop is Free and Open to the Public. Because seating is limited reservations are required and can be made by calling 279-1500.

Dear MBCC Osprey Supporters, This long and cold winter has proved to be uncooperative for us to get a pole and platform up in time for the Ospreys arrival back. The snow is so deep that the utility truck is not able to get to the location where the pole is to be placed. The Ospreys will likely be back next week and I have instructed the cell tower owners that they cannot take down the nest until I can get the new pole and nest in the ground. So the pair will be able to nest up on the cell tower again this spring/summer. We will install the pole and a new nest this summer so that the Ospreys might see it and explore it before they leave in the fall. The male might use it as a nice perch and perhaps one or more of the chicks will use it as a feeding platform after they fledge. Then in the fall, the cell tower own-ers will remove the old nest and next spring when the Ospreys return they will hopefully move onto our new pole. So, your contributions will still be used for the pole installation project, just a little delayed. Once the pair is back, I’ll stop by with my high-powered telescope and we can do a little Osprey watch from in front of the building (once it warms up . . . eventually). Many thanks for all your interest and support and I look forward to continuing this project very soon. Iain MacLeod Executive Director Squam Lakes Natural Science Center

Are there television stations you never watch? Are there others that you would like to have? Well this Tuesday you will get to make your requests with a new Television Survey that will be available. In addition to being open to changing the Channel Line Up

there is also consideration of being able to offer different packages of services (at addi-tional cost). Think in terms of HBO or High Definition (HD), or digital video recorders etc..
