C NNECT NS Colonial Country Club Thomasville, NC February 2018 Newsletter
From Our Board President
I don’t know about you, but I am tired of FREEZING weather! Bring on spring, summer and warmer temperatures! We have already covered our greens more this year than we did all last year, and it is only February! We are hoping and praying that we don’t have any problems with winter kill on the course. Only time will tell. One thing for certain is Addison and his staff had the course in excellent and healthy condition going into the winter, but we can’t control Mother Nature. Make sure when you see Addison and his hard-working crew that you take a moment to thank them for all their demanding work. Along those same lines, we are very fortunate to have the group of employees that we do at Colonial. The staff as well as your board are constantly working hard to keep our staffing levels at challenging levels while providing the kind of service that we all expect. Sometimes, we have more walk-ins for dining than anticipated, and that puts extra pressure on our staff to get everyone served as quickly as we would like. I know I am guilty of not calling or e-mailing in reservations, but it helps on all levels if we can call or email ahead to let them you are coming. In these busy times, it is great to see David, Sara, Jeff and all the staff working together to make things happen. Let’s all make it a point to let them know how much we appreciate their hard work. 2018 is the 60th anniversary of Colonial Country Club. During the past 60 years, the Club has seen a lot of good times as well as challenging times. We are still one of the few clubs left in our area that is still owned by the members. We should all be very proud of our club and what we have accomplished over the past 60 years! Be on the lookout in the months to come for special 60th anniversary events that we are planning to properly celebrate our first 60 years. If you are interested in being part of the 60th year planning committee please contact David to sign up. Our club’s ability to survive is a direct reflection of the quality of members we have that are willing to do whatever it takes to make our club successful. Case in point are dedicated members like Mike and Beth Smith that took time out of their busy schedules to strip the old wallpaper in the women’s locker room, so it could be freshly painted! Another loyal member is Mike Shoulberg who did a fantastic job painting both the men’s and women’s locker rooms. Make sure you tell them all how much you ap-preciate their dedication. Finally, I would like to take a moment to let everyone know that I am honored to be your President in 2018. The entire board and I accept the challenges that will confront Colonial in the months to come. Rest assured that the we will work hard to make 2018 a positive year positioning the club for the next 60+ years so that our kids and grandkids can enjoy the same great country club that we have called ours for the first 60 years.
I hope everyone is like me and ready for warmer weather. The past month has been a cold one and with the snow we have had, diffidently makes it feel like winter time. As, we know it has been cold outside and there has been little golf. Addison and his staff have been working hard at keeping the greens protected, as well as the rest of the golf course. We are hoping for an early spring, but as we know that is up to mother nature. With 2018 being the 60th anniversary of Colonial Country Club, we are working on the membership campaign for the year. We are going to have a goal of 60 new members, for the 60 years of the Club. Dan Outlaw our membership chairman is excited about the 60th anniversary and knows it is going to be a great year. As, soon as we have details we will share them with everyone. We are planning some fun member events and in February we have Valentine’s Day which is always a great time. We will have Rowan Grieb, a music and vocal student from High Point University, here to entertain us this evening. On Friday, February 23rd will be having the “Newly Wed Not So Newly Wed Game”. We had this a couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun. We are looking for four couples to participate in the game if you are interested please contact myself or Sara. We now have the new board or directors in place and they will be working hard to make sure 2018 is a great year as we continue to grow the Club. I look forward to working with each board member to help make Colonial the best it can be. It takes us all working together to make good things happen. David Lehman

This months book is “The Goldfinch” By Donna Tartt
“It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a thirteen-year-old New Yorker,
miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewil-
dered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by school-mates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that re-
minds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ulti-mately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the
rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love-and at the center of a
narrowing, ever more dangerous circle.”

Thank you to everyone that donated to the landscape drawing we are very excited to start making changed around the club house. Also thank you to everyone for being patient as the golf course has been most of the month due to the abnormal cold temperatures. In the mean time stop by the pro shop and check out the apparel sale.
February is here and that means we are inching closer to Spring. It has been a very cold start to the winter season, and I hope the worst is behind us. January has not been a good month for golf due to the weather and the covering of the greens, but I’m hopeful these next few months will be kinder. We have been staying busy servicing and performing preventative maintenance on equipment, cleaning and organizing our shop We have also stayed busy by cutting the brush down on our dams, conducting an irrigation audit, and cutting/hauling wood from our dump pile just to name a few. If you have played golf recently, you will have noticed ropes and stakes have been put up along the cart path corridors on hole 8 and by 11 tee box. We have had a lot of moisture this month and these areas have stayed extremely wet. Please keep you carts out of these areas and any other low-lying areas that may be wet. As always, please remember to fill your divots and repair ball marks to ensure the best playing conditions for everyone! Thanks, Addison Scott, GCS
