If you are weary with praying about something, keep praying. God always answers pray- er, with "yes" or "no," but most often "wait and watch." If you have any sense at all, pray. Pray the words Jesus taught us until you mean them, because if you're paying attention, you will see they are the only prayer that makes sense and all pray- ers grow out of this one prayer. Pray the words until you mean them because you're sick and tired of the world the way it is, you're sick and tired of every person for him- or herself, you're sick and tired of your kingdom and your glory leading you to dead ends. Pray the Lord's Prayer because the world is crazy and this is the only sane solution. Pray it and pray it and pray it until you begin to live it and live it and live it.

Prayer Luke 11:1-13

"Lord, teach us to pray," the disciples ask Jesus. But do they

realize what they're asking? Do we? And if they did know, would they have the courage to ask him anyway? Do we? Do we have the courage and the faith and the common good sense to say to Jesus this day, "Lord teach us to pray?" Do you?

I suppose at the end they wouldn't have traded anything for that wonderful journey. But if they had seen it all at once, realized what was ahead of them, the roller coaster ride of following Christ with all the ups and downs and twists and turns corresponding to their prayers, they might just have paused before they asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray."

Prayer is about the adventure of following Jesus in a world that does not recognize God's rule. Prayer is a "no atheists in fox-holes" experience of living by faith because you are doing God's work. But our prayers falter when we disconnect our praying from our discipleship in Christ. We want the green pastures and the still waters, but the valley of the shadow of death gives us pause. We want "ask whatever you will in my name and God will give it to you," but we want to bend Jesus' will to our wants instead of bend-ing our wants to his will.

We want the high and holy transcendent mountain top mo-ments of glory, but we don't want the down and dirty deep valley days of discipline and labor and fighting against evil in between.

If you want to pray, follow Jesus. If you don't pray, you won't be able to follow him for long. If you're mad at God, pray. You can't clear up your anger with somebody if you aren't willing to talk it out.

If God seems far away, pray. You will never be close to somebody if you aren't on speaking terms. If you are weary with praying about something, keep praying. God always answers pray-er, with "yes" or "no," but most often "wait and watch."

If you have any sense at all, pray. Pray the words Jesus taught us until you mean them, because if you're paying attention, you will see they are the only prayer that makes sense and all pray-ers grow out of this one prayer.

Financial Gifts to CABC

If you would like to make contributions to the church online, either through scheduled giving or one-time donations, visit www.cabc.us/donations to learn more or just scan this code. There are other ways you can give, just by shopping for things you are already buying! Link your Kroger card to our church, and Kroger automatically sends us a check each quarter based on how much our linked members spend. If you need help signing up, please let the church office know. We will be happy to help you! Also, Amazon gives us a donation based on the amount spent by those enrolled. For help signing up with Amazon.com rewards, see our website (www.cabc.us/donations).

If you haven’t signed up for dinner already, please do so! We need some more people to sign up to make it feasible. For our Mid-Week Discipleship this Fall, we will be sharing the stories of our faith through singing our favorite Hymns and sharing our Faith Stories, with a different church member sharing each week. We will meet in the Fellowship Hall Wed evening from 6:30-7:30 pm. This is a time for all ages and we hope you will join us in this time of fellowship and praise! We are looking to possibly offer a meal from 6:00-6:30 prior. The cost would be $5 per adult/ $2 per child (maximum of $15 per family). We need to know how many people would be interested in participating in this in order for us to determine if it is feasible. Please use the enclosed form to indicate your interest in participating in dinner and/or helping. We think this would be a great time of fellowship for all and who doesn’t like to eat?!

Reading Recommendation from the Library

Among the many great books we have in our library, you can find This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness by Frank Peretti. These fictional novels about spiritual warfare point out the ways that our prayers allow the heavenly host to do the work God assigns them. In the stories, demons (named indifference, fear, doubt, helplessness, and hopelessness) attack the characters in order to turn them away from God. This book quickly had me praying for our church and our country. (Review submitted by a Library Committee member.)

Youth Ministry

As the school year begins, we know that it can be hard to find time for quality conversations with your children. As you drive from place to place, here are some ideas you can use! (adapted from Illustrated Children’s Ministry): Sharing Music: Find out what music your kids are listening to and what their favorites are. As you’re driving around, have it playing. their interests. Play some of your music from when you were a child, too. (Let’s be real, it never went This may bring up stories you can share with your kids about that time in your life. It could expand their musical preferences. Or maybe you just laugh together at how ridiculously bad it is now. (For ages 3 & up) Moments of Silence: As life gets busy, one of the first things to get squeezed out is time to get quiet. Before beginning a drive together (or at the end of a drive before you exit the car), take a few moments to just be quiet, take a few deep breaths and receive God’s peaceful presence in your midst. Not only can this practice set the tone for what’s ahead in the day and lower stress, but it also improves overall health, too. (For ages 2 & up) Gratitude Alphabet: Going through the alphabet, share a thing you’re thankful for in your life right now. Go around the car, each person taking the next letter in succession. For example, the first person to start could say something like, “I’m thankful for my best friend, Annie.” Then, the next person is on B and says, “I’m thankful that I got to bat during P.E. baseball today.” Next person is on C, and so on. This encourages gratitude in our kids and conversation between you and them. Additionally, it can give a window into what has gone on in your children’s recent days. (For ages 5 & up) Silly Descriptions of the Day: As the day comes to a close and you drive home, ask your kids how they would describe their day in various silly metaphors. For example, “If your day was an animal, what would it be?” Other possibilities: a cartoon? a song? a sport? a type of food? (Ages 7 & up) Highlights/Lowlights/God Moments: Ask three simple questions of each person: What was the highlight (best part) of your day? What was the lowlight (worst part)? How did you experience God/see God at work today?

Mission Sale Donations Our Mission Sale will be Oct. 6th & 7th. We are still collecting items for the Mission Sale with the exception of Adult clothes (we are trying to play catch up with all of the donations so far). We also do not need tvs. We are happy, however, to take everything else! It’s a great reason to

declutter at home & donate your unused treasures for a great cause! Volunteers are currently working Tuesday & Thursday mornings to organize so these are perfect times to drop off donations. You can also contact the office to schedule drop offs at other times. Please do not leave donations outside as they could get ruined by the weather.

This year, we're excited to use a new strategy in our youth ministry that focuses around four spiritual habits (one for each quarter of the year) that we believe are very important as we work toward our mission of making disciples for Jesus: spending time with others, using your gifts, spending time with God, and sharing your story. Our Sunday morning lessons at both CABC and CPC will follow this pattern, as will our Sunday evening discipleship time. Our Sunday evening schedule will begin on September 10, with dinner at 5, followed by Bible study, which will last until 7. We will begin the year with a “Finding Friends” study. In this 4-week series, we’ll be discussing how to choose our friends wisely, exploring the qualities of a healthy friendship, encouraging students to build friendships with wise people, and helping them see Jesus as their best and truest friend. Need volunteers to provide a meal for the Youth on Sunday evenings: If you would be willing to provide a meal for them, please let Melissa know. Open dates include: September 10 and 24, November 5, 12, 19, & December 10. We’ll also be leading children’s chapel at the Rescue Mission on September 14 and 28, 5:45 -7:45 p.m. You don’t have to be a youth to join in this ministry! Just contact Melissa to learn more. Our monthly mid-week meet-up will be Thursday, Sept. 21, at 6:00 p.m. We’re having a tie-dye party, so bring a white t-shirt to tie dye!

Thank you! Thank you to all the people that have so graciously given their time and hard work to help organize the Mission Sale yet another week! It has been blazing hot, but they have stayed committed to the cause. Thank you to all that have

given their time and sweat!
