Dr. June Elms named DBU Advisor of the Year
DBU recently named Dr. June Elms as the 2010-2011 Advisor of the
Year. Dr. Elms describes receiving the recognition as “an honor” and “a
big, nice surprise.” This honor is awarded once a year based on student
nominations. One student who nominated Dr. Elms stated that, “My
advisor is a wonderful lady, a great professor, an amazing advisor, and so
full of Christ‟s love.”
Dr. Elms advises between 30 and 35 students each semester, and she said
that the biggest challenge is making sure she provides adequate time to
advise each student. She said that the most enjoyable part of advising
students is, “when we get to the end and they see the light at the end of
the tunnel and get excited.”
Dr. Elms has been a professor and advisor for the Kinesiology
Department for the last six years. Prior to her time at Dallas Baptist
University, she worked in the public school system for 33 years. There
she taught middle school and coached a variety of sports including
volleyball, basketball, track and field, and cross country. Dr. Elms
obtained her bachelor‟s degree in All-level Physical Education and
Health from Howard Payne University. Then she went on to get her
master‟s degree in physical education and her doctorate of education in
teaching physical education in college from East Texas State University
(now Texas A&M Commerce).

DBU Graduates Receive UN “Best Practices” Award
DBU graduates from the M.Ed. Reading and ESL program cohort in Hurst-Euless-
Bedford Independent School District received a “Best Practices Award” from the
United Nations (UN). This award
honors two years of work after they
attended a 2009 UN conference on
protecting human rights and then
created and developed a student
service club, “Club We Can,” for
students in grades 3-6. The club
helps students understand human
rights and engages them in ways to
serve their local school,
community, and world. This award
is given to teachers who apply
content from the UN conference in their classroom instruction and in their school
districts in innovative ways. (Awardees pictured above include DBU graduates
Kaylyn Hughes, Annagrace Small, and Connie Rensink).
Here is additional information from the HEB ISD website:
“ „Club We Can‟ began with 35 students, four teachers, and one parent.
The foundation of all club projects is universal human rights and
responsibilities. The teachers designed a model project to show
students how to plan and organize volunteer work. Students then chose
and organized their own projects, which included a food drive and
school flower bed maintenance. Students also conducted a drive for
science lab materials and a fund raising project for children in Kenya.
The 2009-2010 school year ended with a well-attended International
Night. The event celebrated the foods, languages, and cultures of North
Euless students and families. In addition to students' enthusiasm for
„Club We Can,‟ the teachers saw both academic achievement and
school atmosphere improve over the course of the year. This school
year began with a group of 50 club members who have challenged
themselves with one project per month.”

COE Awards for 2010-2011
Each semester the College of Education is privileged to recognize two people
who have contributed to education in general and specifically to the work done in
DBU‟s College of Education. One award is given to persons who have graduated
from one of the programs in the College of Education. It is the Dorothy M. Bush
College of Education Outstanding Alumni Award. The other is given to a person
who is not a DBU graduate, but who serves our students in some way. It is the
Service to Education Award. The awards are presented during the Educators‟
Banquet that is held at the end of the fall and spring semesters.
During the fall banquet, the awards were given to Shannon Houston and Chuck
Roberts. Mrs. Houston received the Outstanding Alumni Award. Shannon is a
graduate of the Master of Education in Educational Leadership program at DBU.
She is the principal of Watauga Middle School, which is a part of the Birdville
Independent School District. Mrs. Houston has also served on the Educator
Preparation Board at DBU, evaluating portfolios presented by graduate students.
She served on a focus committee to suggest improvements for the undergraduate
program that was hosted by the COE. Mr. Roberts is the principal of Sheppard
Middle School in the Mansfield Independent School District and received the
Service to Education award. He is also an adjunct professor in the College of
Education. In addition, he has assisted several DBU students in scheduling
interviews and eventually being hired not only at his school, but at other schools
in the district.
The spring banquet awards were presented to Brianna Sinden-Redding Blake and
Venetia Sneed. As a graduate of the undergraduate COE program, Mrs. Blake
received the Outstanding Alumni Award. She is an English teacher at Seguin
High School in Arlington Independent School District. She received the
Outstanding Teacher award for her school, served as student government sponsor,
and taught leadership classes. Mrs. Sneed is the Director of Human Resources at
the Mansfield Independent School District and has received the Service to
Education award there. She began her education career in the classroom with
Birdville ISD, became assistant principal in Arlington ISD, and also worked in
Human Resources in Arlington. She has been instrumental in placing student
teachers from DBU in the Mansfield ISD. She honored us when she said, “Placing and hiring DBU students is always an easy process for the reputation of
DBU, the rigorous course of study, the program preparation of its interns and the
heartfelt passion of the students are evident in the students you send our way.”

Accreditation Rating
DBU has once again received the highest rating of “Accredited” from the TEA
Accountability System for Educator Preparation (ASEP). Until the end of the 2009-
2010 academic year, this accreditation was based on the university pass rates for
the TExES examinations. For the past five years, our pass rates have been 99%,
100%, 98%, 99%, 100% respectively. The pass rate performance standard for each
candidate group is:
70% for 2009-2010 academic year
75% for 2010-2011 academic year
80% for 2011-2012 academic year
Beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year, our accreditation will be based, not
only on pass rates, but on four performance standards:
Pass rates
Results of appraisals of beginning teachers by school administrators (principal
surveys)
Improvement in student achievement by beginning teachers for the first three
years (beginning in 2012)
University Preparation Program evaluations of first year teachers
Special Recognition
Professor Diane Morren has been awarded a Fulbright teaching grant to the
Central American University in Managua, Nicaragua. She is a DBU College of
Education adjunct professor whose specialization is in English as a second or
foreign language (ESL/EFL) and literacy instruction. Diane will be training
national ESL/EFL teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
DBU graduate Connie Rensink was selected for the Fulbright-Hays Project
Abroad in India this summer. She will be spending several weeks in India
and will be writing curriculum on the Millennium Development Goals.
Connie completed her M.Ed. in Reading and ESL at DBU in May of 2010.
DBU graduate Yvonne Estes was appointed as the Elementary Bilingual/ESL
Coordinator in the Lewisville Independent School District for the 2010-2011
school year. Yvonne completed her M.Ed. in Reading and ESL at DBU in 2010.

DBU Service Project in Bangladesh
This past fall, the College of Education students, faculty, and staff prepared and
delivered 120 school boxes packed with essential school supplies to support
children in poverty in rural Bangladesh. The Muslim children and their families
were delighted by these special school boxes, and Christ‟s love was shared in a
practical and powerful way as DBU students delivered the boxes and lovingly
interacted with the children. Professor Amie Sarker from the College of
Education and biology professor Dr. Deanna Noyes led the DBU team of
students as they served in Bangladesh. The team included biology students who
tested the fields for the rural farmers so they could have more productive crops.
The College of Education faculty and staff have also sponsored the operation of
a Bangladesh village school for 30 children in honor of Dr. Charles Carona,
Dean of the College of Education. The partnering organization for these
projects, Gospel For Muslims (GFM), was started by Dr. Abraham and Amie
Sarker, professors at Dallas Baptist University. GFM‟s non-governmental
organization in Bangladesh provides microloans that assist rural entrepreneurs to
come out of poverty with dignity and integrity, clinics where no other healthcare
is available, primary schools where access to
education is very limited (the literacy rate is 27%
or less), and other humanitarian aid projects.
The village area where GFM‟s ministry is at
work is 90% Muslim, 9%
Hindu, and most people live
on less than $2 USD a day.
DBU‟s partnership with
GFM brings hope to the
precious people of
Bangladesh through
its efforts to eradicate
poverty and illiteracy,
and establish churches
in rural areas that have
yet to hear the Gospel.

Spring 2011 College of Education 7
Congratulations Dr. Carolyn Spain!
Dr. Carolyn Spain, Director, Master of Arts in Teaching at Dallas Baptist
University, was awarded her Ed.D. in Administration Leadership from the
University of North Texas in December 2010. The purpose of her dissertation was
to investigate high school policies and procedures that address educator sexual
misconduct. High school principals completed an online questionnaire which
addressed administrator knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations;
knowledge of district policies and procedures; experience with educator sexual
misconduct; training and communication available in their schools and school
districts for staff, parents, and students; the policies and procedures in place in
secondary schools to prevent educator sexual misconduct; and related problems
that are reported to school administrators. The College of Education faculty
applauds Dr. Spain in her recent achievement.
Kinesiology Department Moving
The Kinesiology Department has relocated their offices to the College of Education.
Dr. Phil Williams moved from the Burg Center and Mrs. Kathy Vernon, Dr. June
Elms and Dr. Ray Galloway moved from the Ebby Halliday Center. The
Kinesiology offices are now located in what used to be the offices for the
Communications Department.
With the move, classroom 112 has been approved to become a kinesiology lab. The
kinesiology lab will allow students to receive practical experience in fitness and
performance assessments necessary for developing exercise and performance
prescriptions. We are excited about the move, and will begin equipping the lab with
state-of-the-art equipment necessary for training our kinesiology and exercise
science majors.
Professor Amie Sarker, program Director of the Master of Education in Reading and
English as a Second Language (ESL), holds a 4-hour training seminar every fall and
spring semester on ESL. The attendees are the teacher candidates for that particular
semester, plus any former DBU College of Education graduates who are interested in
getting help to prepare for the state ESL certification exam.

New Educational Diagnostician Program
DBU, in response to teacher/counselor inquiries, is now offering a
comprehensive educational diagnostician‟s program that contains five key
courses including the 160-hour state mandated practicum. Dr. MaryBeth
Sanders is working with Professor Bob Burgin to complete the new Texas
Education Agency revisions to the program reports. The program should
receive full certification this summer.
Candidates who are interested in the program (Option 1) must hold a current
Master of Education degree and have completed two years of teaching. Option
2 for candidates is to complete the certification program while taking Master of
Education in Special Education classes with an Educational Diagnostician
Specialization. They would need two years of teaching experience prior to
obtaining state certification. Graduates of the Master of Education in School
Counseling (MEDSC) only need three of the five courses, because two of the
certification classes are also part of the MEDSC.
New Accelerated B.S. or B.A./Master of Education in Special
Education Program
Undergraduate students seeking their B.S. or B.A. in EC-6, may now apply for
the Accelerated B.S. or B.A./Master of Education in Special Education. The
program allows undergraduate students to take two reading classes at the master
level. Those two courses meet requirements for both the bachelor and master
programs. Undergraduate students may take additional graduate special
education courses while they are following the teacher education track, when
their degree plans allow. The Master of Education in Special Education is
normally a 36-hour master program, but reduces to 30 hours when six hours are
gained through the accelerated track.
