Krause Scholarship:This scholarship is a tribute to LA Times photojournalist Alwin Krause and his aunt, Florence Campbell Rathom, one of the first female journalists to work at the Providence Journal, Rhode Island. Bachelor of Arts Degree & Minor Available

Providing students foundations in theory, history and performance with concentrations in Recording Technology and Contemporary Music.

The Environment: Students pursuing a music degree can look forward to a variety of learning experiences with particular emphasis on the fact that ALL forms of art are interdisciplinary collaborations among artists. At the core of our collaborations are applied music and new technologies working together to enhance individual creativity.

We bring together musicians, composers, singers, visual artists, actors, choreographers and others together to work, learn, create, and perform using new tools and technologies. MPA is on the cutting edge in training students to take their place as musicians, singers, recording engineers and technicians in areas of performance and production. Our goal is to prepare our students for professional careers in a rapidly-changing technological industry.

Monterey Jazz Festival PartnershipA new partnership program in 2018 launched a series of jazz education activities, the first featuring world-renowned saxophonist, composer and educator Tia Fuller (below), who performed “From Beyoncé and Beyond: Music Business, Performance, and Leadership.”In 2019, we welcomed Top 20 Jazz Drummer Allison Miller & two-time Grammy Award-winning bassist Derrick Hodge for “Jazz and New Horizons.”

About Global Studies:We live in an interdependent world where cultural, economic, media and population flows intersect. You will study the shifting meanings of globalization and how you can prepare for active, responsible, and creative leadership in our increasingly globalized society.Students develop their knowledge of US foreign policy and world history while exploring diverse world views and ideologies. You'll analyze a variety of global issues including: economic and political problems, humanitarian crises, environmental sustainability, the political economy, religious conflict, and women's rights and you will be challenged to consider new options for our complex global problems.

Global Studies: Explore what it means to be a global citizen in the 21st century.

Our alumni want to change the world-they have joined the Peace Corps, attended the World Social Forum, are labor organizers, and are activists for migrant rights and food sovereignty. They have worked in presidential and congressional campaigns, are political consultants, environmental lobbyists, and serve the public as staff in the city, state and federal government. They are teachers, international education consultants and have worked at NGOs in Bosnia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Japan and Jordan.

Bachelor of Arts Degree & Minor Available

The mission of the Visual and Public Art (VPA) Department is to provide students with a lifelong set of skills that synthesize studio and community arts approaches to artistic production, exhibition, and education.

Both individual and collaborative art methodologies are used in this integrated emphasis through coursework in painting and murals; sculpture, installation and performance art; arts education and museum studies, photography, and media culture.

About the Program: Combining theory with practice, the program focuses on historical and contemporary analysis, community collaboration, artistic production, evaluation and distribution of work with an emphasis on applied research, technical competency, and self-expression. The VPA major equips students with skills of art making, ethical inquiry, self-reflection, visual literacy, empathy and reciprocal community engagement to address the critical issues of aesthetics, social justice and cross-cultural competencies in a multicultural and increasingly interconnected global society.

Visiting Artist Series:Our Visiting Artist Series provides a forum for engagement and dialogue with emerging and established figures in contemporary art and culture through a 3-day mini-residency that includes a public lecture, workshop with senior Capstone students, and studio visits where students receive advice, exposure to various professional options, and one-on-one creative criticism and feedback.

Artists Working Side by Side:Artists working Side by Side is a four-year Initiative that will include residency, visiting artists, exhibitions, artist talks, conversations, and Q&A. This is part of VPA’s working with masters Side by Side Initiative that facilities 1/1 work/interaction/mentorship with student and faculty as it applies to their respective disciplines.

Spanish Language & Hispanic Cultures:You’ll attain an advanced level of proficiency in Spanish and acquire a reasonable understanding and knowledge of Hispanic cultures through the study of literature, history, art, social science, and philosophy in a variety of courses taught in Spanish and English. As students plan their programs, they select a specific area of concentration (literature, culture, language) in which to acquire a more profound knowledge relative to their particular interests and goals.

Japanese Language & Culture:You’ll achieve an impressive level of language proficiency (intermediate-high level according to the ACTFL guidelines in Japanese) to be able to communicate effectively in Japanese with well-rounded Japanese cultural knowledge in such areas as history, literature and social sciences.The program prepares graduates for successful careers as professionals in teaching, business, technology, travel, tourism, governmental and nongovernmental agencies, and for graduate study in Japanese studies, linguistics, Asian studies, translation and interpretation, TESOL, or focused international disciplines such as policy, management, environmental sciences, business management, and business administration.

VPA COMPLEX (BUILDING 70)

Complete renovation/structural retrofit of Building 70 provides a fourth building dedicated to our Visual & Public Art Department, resulting in the creation of:

• Student exhibition space• Specialized instruction • Dark rooms• New classroom on South wing

This project also frees up current space in other buildings to expand student learning spaces and permanent dedicated exhibition space for student work.
