The Latinos UnidosScholarship Award
The Latinos Unidos Scholarship Award was established to recognize and reward College of Alameda students that have demonstrated volunteer time towards hosting activities that promote multi-cultural awareness, community service and
being an active College of Alameda club member.
Applicant Requirements:
1. The applicant must complete a scholarship application.
2. The applicant must be an undergraduate student at the College of Alameda, with a GPA of at least 2.0, and current transcript verification.
3. The applicant must list all community service hours for the past year on and/or off campus and briefly describe duties and contributions, as well as a contact to verify participation.
4. The applicant must list all on-campus multi-cultural events it has participated in within 2011 and describe their roles, duties, and special contributions, as well as a contact to verify participation.
5. The applicant must include a one paragraph statement (300 words maximum), to explain what the applicant’s academic goals are while attending the College of Alameda and why they have chosen to volunteer time toward community service and/or the College of Alameda campus events.

Not In Our Town Third Monday Film Series Working Together for Safe Inclusive Communities March 19, April 16, & May 21, 2012 March 19 Not In Our Town II - College of Alameda Student Lounge, Building F Seven stories about people working together to create hate-free towns, cities, workplaces and schools. Religious and community leaders stand united again the threats of white supremacists; a Klan rally is countered with a diversity celebration; citizens work with police to address hate crimes; young people discuss how hate crimes affect their lives; office workers discover that improved communication skills can ease racial tensions; people come together to rebuild burnt churches in the South; a town finds that preventing hate before it starts is the best solution. April 16 Light in the Darkness -College of Alameda Student Lounge, Building F A town comes together to take action after anti-immigrant violence devastates the community. In 2008, a series of attacks against Latino residents of Patchogue, N.Y. culminate with the murder of an immigrant who had lived in the Long Island town for 13 years. Over a 2-year period, the story follows the mayor, victim's brother, & residents as they address the causes of violence, work to heal divisions & take steps to ensure everyone will be safe and respected. ***Free refreshments provided in cooperation with ASCOA & the Latinos Unidos Student Club

May 21 Staging a Response to Hate - Wood Middle School, Multipurpose Room -In conjunction with Alameda's Harvey Milk Day 2012 Celebration- After transgender teen Gwen Araujo is killed by local youth in the Silicon Valley suburb of Newark, the residents of Newark and civic leaders must acknowledge and deal with this brutal and preventable crime. Through their local high school production of The Laramie Project, the students and Newark residents begin to see parallels in their own community and apply lessons learned from the play to the situation they are facing.. All film events are from 5:30-7:30pm. Each film will be followed by a panel discussion. College of Alameda is located at 555 Ralph Appezzato Memorial Parkway. This Spring Semester 2012 the Cinco de Mayo Fiesta/Classic Car Show is proposed for Tuesday, May 1 st :

Hispanic Heritage Month: Our Kick -off Event for Fall 2011 celebrated Caribbean style! Caribbean Latino Culture gave our campus some real island vibes. We had a great turn out and it was a great way to start the semester. Special thanks to the dance performance by COA’s Professor Danny Nguyen’s dancers! Food, music and cultural exploration brought to COA with lots of adelante from Latinos Unidos Student Club and from our COA learning communities: APASS, Amandala & Adelatnte!.

This altar was on display at the West End Library: Oct. 29 – Nov. 12.The altar, honoring Cesar Chavez, was prepared in collaboration with the Alameda Multicultural Community Center & the Latinos Unidos Student Club. This opportunity was made possible by Zoe Holder, Alameda Multicultural Community Center Director in cooperation with Jane Chisaki, Director of the Alameda Free Libraries.
Toy Drive & Philippines Clothes Drive: Robert Fernandez, LUSC President, headed up the effort to deliver clothes to the children in the Philippines. Thank you to all of
you that donated to this effort and thank you for your support. AND our 3rd annual Toy Drive, done in cooperation with the San Francisco Hispanic Lions Club. We gave out free hot coffee, cider & sweets to celebrate the season!
