A final thanks
This will be my final report for the year, and I would like to
take this opportunity to thank all those people who have
supported the school over the last twelve months. Your
efforts do not go unnoticed and are much appreciated.
Thank you again for your valued and continued support
throughout the year and I look forward to working with you
for the benefit of your children in 2013.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas
and a safe and happy 2013.
Enjoy the holidays.

ABC on Sunday Night
This coming Sunday evening, December 16, at 6:00 pm, the
ABC1 will be showing an edited version of this year’s School
Spectacular. Look out for Lisa in the State Dance Ensemble –
last year she made an appearance a number of times. The full
version of the night will be broadcast on ABC2 on New
Year’s Eve.
Pip finds a home
Many of our students will no doubt remember a baby possum
found on the day of our Coly Olympics, that we named “Pip”.
Mrs Wiltshire contacted Wires in Griffith, and Pip was
looked after by a lady named Karen. Very quickly Pip started
to gain weight, growing from 700 grams to 1.5 kg. Karen is
now happy to report that on advice from one of the Wires
managers, Pip has been released into a red gum forest near
the river. Pictured is Pip thriving before his release, and then
his new home created by Karen.
Working right to the end
One of the benefits of our change-over system in secondary is
that students are better able to make the most of learning
opportunities, right until the end of the year. Even though
2012 reports will soon be distributed, many teachers will still
be giving assessment tasks right up until the final week of
school, with marks going towards 2013 results. Students are
doing a great job of continuing to study and work hard, which
is so much better than just winding down in the final weeks.
Coleambally Central School values integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, cooperation, participation, care, fairness & democracy
Keep up the good work everyone – and then holidays will
soon be here.
A final note
I would like to take the opportunity in this final newsletter for
the year, to thank everyone for their support in my first year
here at Coleambally. I would also like to farewell students
who are leaving – both those who have completed Year 12
and those moving to other schools. We wish you all well for
the future.
It has been exciting for me this year to be part of the
progressive system the school has developed for senior
secondary education. I continue to see many benefits and
advantages for students, and already we have seen how this
has translated into early university offers for our 2012
Year 12 students.
I have also appreciated getting to know staff, students and
their families, building relationships and working together for
the benefit of students. I look forward to 2013 when our
school community can continue to build on our successes
from 2012. Noel Maddern

Secondary News Farm Excursion
On Tuesday Mr Apted the Agriculture class and I travelled to
Peter O’Connor’s farm for an excursion. This excursion was
very beneficial to the students who are not “off a farm”, as
Peter explained how his farms work, the different enterprises
and the costs involved with farming. The students felt it was a
valuable excursion and they learnt a great deal over the
couple of hours. We looked at machinery, rice, wheat, GPS
and much more. Thank you to Peter for taking time off work
to educate the students and Mr Apted for driving. Luke and
Adam were absent from our excursion, but the students
informed them on what they had learnt.

Textiles and Design
This year the HSC Textiles and Design class made a variety
of things from dresses, fascinators, a laptop bag and a baby's
quilt. Now that the projects are safely back from the markers,
this is what they made.
Kate Sheppard - wearing her dress
Olivia Lawrence wearing one of her 5 fascinators, all of the
other fascinators pictured are Olivia's
Kataya Seiler - Baby's quilt
Monique Ledwidge - formal dress
Casey McPherson - laptop bag from recyclable materials.
Well done to all of these students. Go and check out some of
our schools HSC projects and other schools on display at the
Griffith Regional Art Gallery, see their website for opening
hours.

Duke of Edinburgh
From 29th
November – 5th
December 25 CCS students, 2
teachers, 1 parent helper and both of our 2012 school captains
attended a bushwalk throughout the mountains near
Tumbarumba and this time it was the school’s first ever 6 day
journey. The first 3 days were a “practice journey” and were
catered for by Laurel Hill Forest Lodge. During this part of
the journey walking areas were restricted due to weather
conditions.
The next 3 days involved students cooking food for
themselves and facing harsh weather conditions. In the
duration of the 6 days as well as bushwalking, exploring and
camping, the students learnt some first aide skills (how to use
a medical kit, emergency scenarios etc.), survival skills (such
as building shelters) and other important skills such as
cooking and orienteering.
A big thanks must go to Mat Mannes, Shelby Brain and
Nicole Bellato for being a great support team over the week,
also a big thank you to all the parents for volunteering to
drive the students to and from Tumbarumba.

Download CCS Library e-books! The CCS library has just opened a platform for borrowing e-
books from home.
Any student or staff member of our school may access our
resources at http://ccs.wheelers.co/ .
In order to register as a borrower,
1. Select Sign in in the top right corner.
2. Scroll down to select Register – the green key
3. Register using your school internet user name and
any password that you like. You can provide your
school or home email address.
4. You can borrow books from the elibrary as soon as
your registration is approved. Most registrations
will be approved within 24 hours. If you register
during school holidays it may take longer.
E-books can download to iPod touch, i Pad, iPhone, kobo
ereader, Sony ereader, some MiGear ereaders and android
devices. Typically the loan period is two weeks, after which
the book will expire from your device. Unfortunately, kindles
will not work with this platform.
Borrowers will be required to download some free software
to get started. The most common is Adobe Digital Editions or
Bluefire Reader, depending on your device.
Excellent instructions and additional information are
provided in the help section of the web page.
Please note that although the collection is very small at the
moment, I am adding books every day and, as always, I
welcome recommendations from staff and students. You can
send requests via the contact link on the web page. A number
of very popular books are not yet available for our e-book
service as we must wait for their publishers to approve of and
join the provider that we are using.
We also have several Kobo ereaders. They are currently
available to secondary students who have achieved a Bronze
award and have no current outstanding loans.
