Closing date: 31 January 2014 Northam – National Union of Mineworkers chief negotiator, Ecliff Tantsi, on Wednesday this week was confident that it was only a matter of time before NUM and Northam Platinum settled their differences over wage negotiations which caused the prolonged strike at the Zondereinde mine in Limpopo. At present the strike will continue after NUM rejected Northam’s revised wage offer. Northam spokesperson, Marion Brower said, “We hope that some kind of settlement can be reached, expeditiously. [Because the] company is suffering, employees are suffering and we have to reach a settlement which both parties will be party to.” The latest offer on the table is 9.5%, while NUM demanded 16% as well as a 69% in- crease in living-out allowances. NUM also indicated its willingness to enter into a two- year wage deal, as long as half of the wage increases (still to be agreed upon) occurred in the first year, whereas Northam wants a three-year deal. Currently the only major platinum producer where NUM is still the leading trade union and the fourth-largest producer, Northam has lost R500 million in revenue and the workers have lost R100 million in wages. Nearly a quarter of the year’s production re- mains unmined and apart from the severe financial repercussions, there is the possibil- ity that workers will be laid off once the strike comes to an end. All eyes are on the outcome of the latest meeting, as senior executives and analysts agree the industry cannot afford double-digit increases. At this stage it seems that AMCU, who re- ceived the mandate to strike at the three biggest platinum producers, Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin, is holding off on work stoppages in anticipa- tion of a resolution to the Northam strike. If NUM is successful, AMCU will undoubtedly demand more. If NUM accedes, AMCU has the choice of trying to get a better deal, or call an all-out strike after giving the required 48-hour no- tice to management. Should AMCU succeed in getting a better wage hike with a shorter strike, chances are NUM will lose more members to AMCU. Still no end to Zondereinde strike?
