Protests concerning water shortages in Mothutlung, Brits, turned ugly on Sunday afternoon. Angry residents barricaded an access road with burning tyres; and police were called in to monitor the situation. Residents claimed to have been without water for over a month and accused political leaders of corruption and incompetence. Some of the protestors said that there were interested parties who intentionally damage water pipes in order to win tenders for the repair of the very same pipes. On Wednesday, Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Police offered his condolences to the families of the two protestors shot and killed, allegedly by the police. The Minister also appealed to the community to assist the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) in their investigation and come forward with any information or evidence. He asked the public “… not to jump to conclusions before the investigation has been completed…” He added that any police officers suspected of wrongdoing will be dealt with through the SAPS’s internal disciplinary process. Mthethwa said in a statement that although the public has a constitutional right to protest, “These very rights do not imply that people must be violent, destroy property, attack police and intimidate others.” Read more on Page 2
