Symptoms

The cushioning helps to promote regular foot movement as the feet naturally adapt to the surface of the mat. The movement of muscles contracting and expanding is very subtle but is enough to help circulation and reduce (even prevent in some cases) the health risks associated with prolonged standing.

Many veins, especially veins in the legs have one-way valves to help blood flow back to the heart against the

force of gravity. The blood pushes through the valves as it travels towards the heart and the valve then closes to prevent backward flow. Walking and movement, such as that done naturally on an anti-fatigue mat, compresses the veins and helps thrust the blood towards the heart.

Anti-fatigue matting also helps to distribute the pressure over a larger surface area, therefore absorbing some of the impact from standing.

Statistics• An estimated 439,000 workers in

2011/12 suffered from MSDs caused or made worse by their current or past work. Approximately 176,000 of these workers suffered from a bad back; 177,000 from problems relating to upper limbs and neck, and in the region of 86,000 with lower limb problems.

• It is estimated that 7.5 million working days were lost in 2011/12 through work-related MSDs.

• On average, each person suffering took an estimated 17 days off in 2011/12.

Scientific Study Confirms the Benefits of Anti-Fatigue MattingMuscular Skeletal DisordersA scientific study commissioned by COBA Europe Ltd and conducted by Loughborough University emphatically confirmed that anti-fatigue mats can significantly increase comfort to workers who stand for prolonged periods of time and also help to reduce fatigue.

The study carried out by the Department of Human Sciences using 14 independent participants compared a number of anti-fatigue floor matting samples to standing directly on concrete, testing in laboratory conditions using both objective and subjective measures.

Test methods included infrared thermal imaging, body temperature sensors, calf circumference measurements and cognitive testing. Participants were provided with the same test clothing and conditions, standing on different anti-fatigue mats.

The subjective results showed statistically significant benefits to users of anti-fatigue mats when compared to standing on a concrete floor. Both thermal and postural comfort benefits were experienced and levels of fatigue were reduced.

How can Anti-Fatigue Matting help?

Varicose Veins is a common symptom for those whose occupations require lengthy periods of standing.

Regular standing on hard floor surfaces can damage joints, cause leg swelling as well as lead to problems in the feet, including bunions, corns, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fascilitis and other orthopaedic conditions.

Standing can also lead to lower back and upper limb pain and discomfort.

Tiredness and lapses of concentration can lead to other accidents in the workplace.

FATIGUEMusculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are problems affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves or other soft tissues and joints. Certain occupational activities, such as regular prolonged standing on hard floor surfaces, can be a trigger for such problems. Static positions and awkward postures are significant contributors. Statistics for MSDs are usually summarized in three categories: Upper Limb Disorders, Lower Limb Disorders and Back Pain.

The danger is they can creep on gradually; initially these can show just mild symptoms but in time, can progressively get worse leading to severe pain and sometimes irreversible acute conditions that can impact an individual’s quality of life. A well designed, well-equipped and well managed workplace can avert such problems.

environmentally-friendly credentials, incorporating recycled

materials in their manufacture. Whether it is interlinking

entrance tiles, carpet on rolls or a custom made aluminium

system, our fully trained sales team can advise at every stage of

specification and installation.

Slips and trips are the most common cause of major injuries at work. Most slips occur on wet or contaminated floor surfaces. Even dry dirt and grit can present a slip hazard. In the UK, a staggering 95% of major slips reported result in broken bones and can even lead to more serious accidents, even fatality according to HSE statistics. It is impossible

to put a cost on individual suffering. The estimated cost to industry is over £500 million per year, while cost to society is considered to be over £800 million per year. Well specified, well maintained entrance matting plays a critical role in slip prevention to employees and the general public.

The key to successful entrance matting is ensuring that a sufficient ‘length’ of matting is installed. The higher the footfall, the longer the entrance matting should be. For example, we would recommend that a busy shopping centre that may easily facilitate some 2000 people per day, install a length of entrance matting that is between 9 and 12 metres. This accommodates about six

footsteps – that is enough to remove up to 90% of dirt/moisture. Contained dirt and moisture from wheeled chairs and trolleys is another element of consideration. A full wheelchair revolution requires a minimum length of 2.5m. So, the more dirt and moisture that is trapped on entry, the less floor cleaning there should be. Floors should last longer, budgets should go further.

Our versatile collection of entrance matting includes both ‘off-the-shelf’ and custom made options. Our Premier range of interlocking PVC/Carpet entrance tiles is fully stocked and our aluminium systems are made to measure

for each specific installation (see templating service below). We also stock a range of carpet entrance matting available in cut lengths, rolls and tiles.

Rolls, Tiles or Made-to-Measure

Once an order has been placed for an aluminium product in the PLAN range, it’s important for the area where the matting is to be laid is to be measured precisely. This enables the product to just slot into place when fitting. We offer a templating service that involves a site visit. If you are experienced in this, we are happy to supply based on the template you provide as long as it meets our specification.

Templating

Although COBA Europe does not currently offer an in-house installation service, our company has developed good relationships with flooring contractors nationwide. Should you require the services of a flooring contractor, we can recommend a suitable service provider in your area. There is no obligation or pressure to use the suggested flooring contractor. And of course, there is not always the need to employ the services of a flooring contractor. Some of our products, with the right equipment, can be installed without professional help and come complete with fitting guidelines.

Installation

Once installed, it is essential that entrance matting is regularly cleaned using appropriate cleaning techniques and products. Regular maintenance is also critical to underfoot safety. Material Nylon Rubber Polypropylene Cotton Coir

Info Nylon is a synthetic fibre and offers some of the best resiliency of all carpet materials through good crush resistant properties. The other benefit of nylon entrance matting is its ability to dry quickly.

Rubber is suitable for heavy-duty outdoor entrance areas. Rubber door mats have good non-slip characteristics. They are generally quite heavy and therefore stay in place well on the ground.

Derived from a thermoplastic polymer, entrance matting with polypropylene fibres is very popular as the fibres give an effective scraping action due to their abrasive texture.

A natural fibre, cotton has many advantages. Rather like a towel, it soaks up moisture and is renowned for its absorbency and quick-drying properties. It is ideal for wiping wet feet and paws!

Coir is the epitome of the traditional door mat. We would never recommend it for a commercial entrance nowadays for accessibility reasons, but it looks great in the home.

First-StepTacky mats for contamination control

• A hygienic pad of peel-off adhesive coated, disposable sheets manufactured from an anti-microbial agent to protect against bacteria, mould and mildew.

• Once applied to the floor the self-adhesive backing keeps the mat in place.

• The ‘tacky’ sheets capture dirt and dust from footwear and wheeled equipment for contamination control.

• When the top sheet becomes soiled, simply peel off to reveal a clean layer.

• Adhesive backed pads stick directly to the floor surface.• Ideal for hospitals, clean rooms, general industrial and
